first edition oblong folio (26.8 x 33.5 cms.) 7 plates drawn and engraved by Alken with contemporary hand colouring as issued, 1 leaf of text (printed on recto only), original printed buff wrappers, front wrapper printed to serve as a 'title page', secured by a pink ribbon through stab holes at right-hand margin, wrappers lightly soiled, some dustiness and minor marking at plate margins and a few grubby marks at outer lower marginal corners, very lightly creased where once folded, loosely laced into later stiff plain wrappers. Azara (1746-1821), a military officer and naturalist, was appointed to a delegation to settle the boundary dispute between Spain and Portugal in the Rio de la Plata region and spent the twenty years 1781 to 1801 in the region, during which time he studied and documented the area's geography, animals and native peoples. He published his Voyage in Madrid in Spanish after his return to Europe with 4 octavo volumes of text and this accompanying folio atlas volume. The atlas includes folding maps of South America, Paraguay and the Province of Buenos Aires, the Government of Buenos Aires, the Government of Paraguay and part of Chaco, and the Province of Chiquitos and Government of Matagroso and of Cuyaba; eight city plans and views, including a double-page plan and view of Buenos Aires, seven plates depicting animals, and four plates depicting birds.
