Paris: Office Technique Pour l'Utilisation de l'Acier, 1935. First Edition. This impressive publication is a record of a competition for a grand large-scale exhibition building at La Defense on the outskirts of Paris. The competition was organised by O.T.U.A., publishers of the magazine l'Acier [steel], to exemplify the spectacular possibilities of steel in modern building. Thirteen invited entrants accepted the challenge with varying success. Results range through art deco monumental, severe modernist, and near-visionary. Detailed information is given for each entry: area plans, perspective views, plans, elevations, engineering details and calculations, materials and services. Folio, numerous photogravure plates, plans, elevations and details, black leather spine, coloured decorative boards edged with white leather (scuffed). Binding signed 'Barast', apparently one of a number of special copies for presentation, this copy numbered '8' and inscribed to M. Bruneton.

Houndsditch: Bishop & Co, 1830. First Edition. A delightful woodcut alphabet. Here are many favourites - the Fox, the Goose, and the Lamb - but where necessary, the publisher's evidently felt capable of stretching their young audience. Significantly, it includes a 'K' for Kangaroo, revealing how wide-spread and how quickly the appetite for exotic natural history from Australia and the South Pacific had grown. There are also more unusual inclusions such as 'I' for Ibex, and even 'M' for Mermaid. Sadly, inspiration only went so far; here, X is for the Letter X. The work also includes a child's ditty: "When school is done, g[o] home loiter not on the wa[y] / Come to school clean and play not by the way.". Duodecimo, 12 pp. in total, woodcut illustrations throughout; original green printed wrappers, folded (not sewn) as issued, just lightly chipped at head of front.

Dynamic publication of the Victorian Artists Society featuring a wide range of reviews and editorials which provide an excellent insight into the Australian art scene of the 1940s. Four volumes, small staple-bound quartos in illustrated wrappers, black & white plates and line drawings throughout; covers are thumbed with occasional stains; a good set nonetheless.

Some of the scraps have been arranged into different letters of the alphabet. Bound in hand-coloured illustrated leather boards, a border made from peacock feathers, title embossed on the front cover, a near fine copy.
