A clean, sound copy of this beautifully illustrated book, with 24 color plates and 220 line drawings. A prior owner's name and address are stamped on the title page, but there are no other signs of use. A mylar Brodart cover protects the lightly worn jacket against future wear. There is just a touch of foxing along the fore-edge, but the pages are fine. .

New York and Cincinnati: Benziger Brothers. Good with no dust jacket. 1916. First Edition. Hardcover. A clean, sound copy withdrawn from a college library. Library markings are minimal. They include a pretty bookplate on the front endpaper and a blank call slip at the back. There is one stamping, on the bottom edge of the textblock, and a call number on the spine has been blacked out. The text itself is in terrific shape. High-quality paper was used, and it has aged to a lovely creamy beige. The edges are deckled. There is a short closed tear at the top of the Table of Contents, probably dating to when the pages were first cut. The plates, of which there are quite a few, are in good order, with not a bit of foxing to be seen. The binding is sound, with fading to the spine, but no significant edgewear. I believe this to be the first American printing, since the date on the copyright page is given as 1925 and no other printings are indicated, but according to the publisher, this is not definitive, since at that time there was no consistent method for indicating first editions. Often additional printings were indicated, but not always. At any rate, this copy looks old, for better or worse The boards are stained and worn along the edges, and the cloth backing tape is frayed, especially at the top, but the binding is sound. Although the endpapers are foxed, the book itself is not. The interior is in quite pleasing condition, with light age-toning and no markings or other signs of use. There is an attractive bookplate on the front board. It shows two ascending notes of music tied together, with a curled banner beneath and the words "ex libris" at the top. A name has been written on it in pencil. .

A clean, tight ex-library copy of this detailed study of the screw propeller, with enough illustrations to satisfy any soul. There are several pull-out charts, including one that gives the dimensions of the propellers of many specific steamships. It was the practice of this library to emboss plates on the periphery with a lacy imprint of its name, no doubt to deter theft. The effect is not obtrusive, and only some of the illustrations are thus stamped. Other library markings are minimal, and the binding is sound. A clean, tight copy, with no markings or signs of use, and just a touch of shelfwear to the very uppermost corners, which are very lightly indented. The gorgeous jacket with an N. C. Wyeth-like full color illustration is fully intact in front, although there are two sizeable chips missing along the spine. A mylar Brodart cover now protects it. This purports to be a biography of Kenneth Beauclerc Saunders, AKA Red, but I have no idea if there is any truth to this. Looks like a great read, though! .

Philadelphia PA: John Grigg, James Crissy, Towar and Hogan, J. G. Auner. Good with No dust jacket as issued. 1829. First Edition. Hardcover. In pretty good shape for its advanced age. The leather-covered boards have lost any lettering they may have been graced with, but they are intact, and the binding is quite sound. There is considerable foxing and tanning to the text, and the pages are wavy, although not from exposure to water, which would have ruined the binding. The text is perfectly legible. The book is not illustrated, alas, and of course the author is not the famous surgeon, but a French one who has faded into obscurity, but anyone who is interested in the complete work of the subject of The Gross Clinic will want this book. There is a pull-out genealogical chart of Aragon royalty in very good condition. It was the practice of this library to emboss plates with a lacy imprint of its name (to deter theft, I assume) , but this is done in blank space, not on the artwork itself.
