Boston: F. Minot, 1834. 12mo. 140 x 100 mm. (5 3/4 x 4 inches). [6], 31 pp. Contemporary binding of marbled paper over boards with red leather spine. Corners rubbed. Front hinge completely separated and back hinge very loose. Spine cracked. Instructions for a memory game to help children learn the names of people in the Bible. Correct answers garner "counters" or points and those points transfer into sugar plums. This small volume is dedicated to Mrs. Eliza Farrar with "sentiments of affection and respect." Farrar (1791-1870) spent most of her adult life in Boston and wrote books for children, her most popular work being a book of advice The Young Lady's Friend published in 1836. It's possible this anonymously published scripture game was written by Farrar's friend Eliza Follen. Follen, a noted abolitionist, came from a prominent Boston family and also wrote for children, taking a particular interest in religious instruction. Among her other work, she edited a Sunday School publication titled the… Read More

Paris: chez Claude-Antoine Jombert, 1775. 8vo.  195 x 120 mm., [7 ¾ x 4 ¾ inches].  iv, 500 pp.  Illustrated with 6 folding plates with numerous diagrams.  Bound in contemporary mottled calf, lightly rubbed at the edges.  A sound and attractive copy. First in French, originally published in Milan in 1748 in two quarto volumes under the title Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana,.  It is considered the first book on differential and integral calculus written by either a man or a woman and its publication brought Agnesi international recognition.  Although the title suggests that the book was written for the "use of Italian youth" it was a highly sophisticated and detailed presentation including algebraic equations, and thermos of finite and infinitesimal quantities.  The six plates illustrate her ideas.  This French edition was translated by P. T. d'Antelmy, with additions by Charles Bossut.  It was followed in England in 1801, translated by John Colson, the Lucansian… Read More

Philadelphia: Gedruckt bey Edmund Y. Schelly, 1838. 12mo., 180 x 105 mm., [7 x 4 ¼ inches]. 103 pp. One woodcut illustration of a "silk reel" in the text. Publisher's leather spine over printed boards, cut of the silk reel printed on rear cover. Paper stock toned with age, showing some tide marks otherwise a very good copy. First German language edition of this standard work on growing silk and mulberries originally published in Boston in 1835. The business of growing mulberries was one of the boom crops in American agriculture during the 1830s and Pennsylvania was one of the centers for its cultivation. "In the mid-1830s a new species of mulberry tree was introduced into America that purportedly grew much faster and could feed significantly more silkworms than the native species. This gave rise to a brief silk craze, with increased, widespread attempts at domestic silk cultivation and much financial speculation in the industry." For an interesting insight… Read More

Small tear to upper right corner minor discoloration, otherwise in very good condition. Born in South Carolina, James Akin (1773-1846) migrated north to Philadelphia in the mid-1790'S and immediately began producing images and cartoons in a satirical style. He moved to Newburyport, MA for a couple of years but returned to Philadelphia where he spent the remainder of his career. He was skilled in the arts of fine line engraving, relief cutting, and lithography and when business was slow, he acted as an apothecary, print seller, and restauranteur. He was straight out of the school of James Gillray but his wit and his skills as a printmaker distinguished him from many of his contemporaries who were satisfied to simply copy the work of the English master. "Whether in his fine line engraving or in his etched or lithographic cartoons and caricatures,… Read More
