This one is "The Clipper Ships", reviewed as an exciting page-turner. It covers the design, building and exploits of such notable clippers as the Sea Witch, the Flying Cloud, and the Cutty Sark. "To see a clipper knife through wind-swept seas on a sprint from New York to San Francisco or between London and Hong Kong was to witness the quintessence of sailing. In winds that would cause others to reef sail, clipper captains flew every possible scrap of canvas, until the masts quivered at breaking… Read More

Description:
This is a First Edition of the Foulsham Henty Library's publication of With Clive in India: The Beginnings of an Empire, written in 1884 by the English novelist and war correspondent George Henty (1832-1902). Henty popularized the genre of Juvenile Adventure Fiction--he was the first to write very successful books about war-time adventures for boys. Through the 1950s, the publisher W. Foulsham released the Foulsham Henty Library; in this book, the publisher states "this book has been carefully edited and slightly abridged to meet the reading tastes of the Modern Boy".
This copy is undated, but the original owner signed the corner of the front endpaper and dated it 1957.
Plain blue boards with gold lettering on the cover and spine. 224 pages of thick paper. One color illustration; otherwise unadorned.
This copy is a little dusty. It has an old book smell--not musty, but dusty. The pages are all clean and clear.

Description:
This is a first edition, first printing, of Progressive Lessons in Machine Shop Practice, Book I. It was produced as a textbook by Harry A Jones, Machine Shop Instructor at Vancouver Technical School, and the title page states that it was authorized for use in the schools of British Columbia. However, it quickly became an international best-seller and was used in schools throughout the world--this copy was purchased in the UK. See table of contents photo: everything covered is illustrated. This copy is in superb condition. 172 pages, only slightly yellowed with age. The paper is fine and smooth. The fading you see in the photos only appears in photos. There are a couple of fingerprints. Two students signed the book, one at the front, one at the back. Other than that, it is perfect. And all still relevant to woodworkers and cabinetmakers.

Description:
This is a 1st Edition of Manisty of the School House : Public School Story, by A.L. Haydon (Arthur Lincoln,1872-1964)
It was published by Frederick Warne, London, 1926.
There seem to be differing covers for the first editions; this copy is as above, i.e. 'Public School Story', whereas others say that their books say 'A Public School Story'. As if the typesetter for the original left out the 'A' in the title and they had to quickly reprint it.
The dust jacket here is not perfect and has a lot of wear marks. But it has done its job because the book is absolutely pristine. Never read, no marks of any kind, fully intact, with thick, high-quality paper and lovely colour. 281 pages plus ads, dark orange boards etched with unfaded black type.
Provenance
There is a book plate on the front endpaper. It reads 'Awarded to Donna Reynolds for Attendance at the Morning Service', Wesley Y.W.L'
I think we can assume that YWL is the person who gave her the book; 'Wesley' has to be Wesley College, Dublin, which was the… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition (I think--see image 5) of Let the Sea Make a Noise, A History of the North Pacific from Magellan to MacArthur, written by the American Historian Walter McDougall.
From a review:
In this exceptionally innovative work, Walter McDougall projects on a large screen four hundred years of exciting voyages of discovery, pioneering feats, engineering marvels, political plots and business chicanery, racial clashes and brutal wars. It is a chronicle complete with little-known facts and turning points, but always focused on the remarkable people at the center of events, among them the America-loving Japanese ambassador to Washington on the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Russian builder of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and a Hawaiian queen during the first period of Western competition for the islands.Let the Sea Make a Noise . . . is a gripping account of the rise and fall of the empires in the last, vast, unexplored corner of the habitable earth -- an area occupying one-sixth of the… Read More

Description:
This is the 9th novel (1996) by Peter Ackroyd, the English biographer, author and critic.
It is a story of conflict, treachery, hypocrisy and greed set in the New World and based on the premise that the poet John Milton fled from England prior to the restoration of Charles II in 1660 (Milton was also a civil servant under Oliver Cromwell).
This copy is an unread first edition. Still, there is a bookplate in it (a very attractive one) but that is easily removed. It's a smaller hardcover; 5 2/3" x 8 ¾". 277 pages. The only mark on it is the remainder of the glue from the price tag. It's pristine.

Description:
Chasing Rainbows is a 1930 American Pre-Code romantic musical film directed by Charles Reisner, starring Bessie Love and Charles King, and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The supporting cast features Jack Benny, Marie Dressler, and Polly Moran. This was Jack Benny's first dramatic role in a motion picture.
It was filmed in black and white, but had two Technicolor sequences, which were lost in the 1965 MGM vault fire. The rest of the movie survives and is on DVD in the Warner Archive Collection.
The movie introduced the song Happy Days Are Here Again, by Jack Yellen and Milton Ager. This song has been recorded hundreds of times, but its most famous version is by Barbra Streisand, who really laid claim to it.
This is four sheets of music plus covers. There are 3 little tears and a crease; a framer can do a nice job with it though.

This is a first US edition, third printing, of The Memoirs of Field-Marshal Montgomery (Field-Marshal Viscount Bernard Law Montgomery of Alamein).
Montgomery's memoirs cover the full span of his career, first as a regimental officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and then as a Staff Officer. He saw service in India before impressing with his courage, tactical skill and staff ability in the Great War. Despite his tactless uncompromising manner, his career flourished between the wars but it was during the retreat to Dunkirk that his brilliance as a commander revealed itself. We can hear Monty telling his side of the story of the great North African Campaign followed by the even more momentous battles as he strove for victory in North West Europe. His interpretation of the great campaign is of huge importance and reveals the deep differences that existed between him, Churchill, Eisenhower and other leading figures.

Description:
This is a perfect first edition of Great Rivers of Europe, compiled and edited by the English historian Alan Bullock (Lord Bullock of Leafield, founder of St Catherine's College, Oxford and editor of the Oxford History of Modern Europe). It is a historical and physical survey of the ten great rivers of Europe: the Danube, Elbe, Loire, Po, Rhine, Seine, Tagus, Thames, Tiber and the Volga. It is a large book--12" x 11" x 1 1/4". 292 pages and packed with photographs, maps, and illustrations. It was published in London in 1966. The books were shipped to the US, where they were marketed by the International Book Society and Time Life Books. It comes in a navy blue slip case and those company names are stamped on it; they do not appear in the book though. There are a few bumps to the slip case, nothing major. The book is plain gray tweed boards with gold lettering on the spine. I don't think it has been read; both the book and dust jacket are in perfect condition.
