Description:
Among the many other patentees included in this volume are such famous inventors as Colt, Ericsson, Goodyear, Morse and Roebling. Lincoln, whose patent #6469, was an "Improved Method of Lifting Vessels over Shoals," signed in type "A. Lincoln," appears on p. 262 (his name is also in classified and alphabetical lists on pps. 57 & 96).
Lincoln's patent, issued 22 May 1849, resulted from an experience on his return to Illinois from Congress in September 1848. Shortly after visiting Niagara Falls, the steamboat on which Lincoln was travelling became stranded on a sandbar (then the bane of river navigation). He watched as planks, boxes and empty barrels were laboriously shoved under the boat until it floated free. Subsequently, he conceived of placing expansible chambers on the sides of a vessel, which could be inflated bellows-like to both support and raise a keel to a shallower draft. The invention never drew interest in Lincoln's lifetime, but a variation of the principle has been used in submarines for… Read More

Description:
Signed! Baber was a descendant of the Hanks family, and a relation to Lincoln. This item is a mimeographed typescript produced by Mrs. C. Gerald Brann, of Bloomington, and is bound in blue boards similar to the 1960 book.
The volume is inscribed and signed by Baber to Lincoln scholar, collector, and Curator of Illllinois State's Lincoln Collection, James Hickey. Includes interesting personal letters and notes discussing, among other things, fence rails then still existing on Baber's farm that were split by the "Hanks Boys," and perhaps Lincoln, in the 1830's.
Included are ephemeral materials including an errata sheet bearing Baber's handwritten notes, and separate index pages. All of this was used to print the book. This rare pre-publication copy of an important volume of Lincolniana is a one-of-a-kind example of a scarce source of genealogical Lincolniana.

Description:
Paul Angle's Here I Have Lived takes its title from a phrase in Lincoln's Farewell Address to the people of Springfield, IL. This is a careful account of the community where Lincoln rose from relative obscurity to the most powerful office in the county. More than a major contribution to Lincolniana, it is a study of the founding and growth of a typical American frontier community.

Among Paul Angle's titles were Executive Secretary of the Abraham Lincoln Association, Illinois State Historian, and Director of the Chicago Historical Society. He was the author of over 20 books about Lincoln and Illinois History. Reprinted by Abraham Lincoln Book Shop.
