Book Library-bound copy of the monograph from Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science. Number I of the Third Series, published in January 1885. The paper was originally published in 1877 by the Maryland Historical Society. The library binding is probably the reason this copy has survived since the paper is fragile. The subtitle is: With minor papers on George Washington's Interest in Western Lands, the Potomac Company and a National University. The paper traces "the influence of Maryland in securing a general cession of western territory for the public good" (p. 8) -- the land which became known as the Northwest Territory. The pages are lightly tanned, but remain bright and without any foxing and only minimal scattered spotting. However, any blank leaves are missing, so the block begins with the title page and ends with the final page of text. As a result, the first and last pages are heavily browned around the edges where they have been exposed to the glue from the inside covers. Bound in calf over boards. The leather is heavily worn, particularly at the corners where the boards are showing through. The spine has six compartments, but is missing the label for the title. The first volume’s topic is the institutions of the United States (Institutions des EÌtats-Unis) and the second is the functioning of those institutions (Fonctionnement de ces institutions). In a publication note Tocqueville says that because the first edition sold out so quickly, he was only able “to introduce very slight changes in the second. He had to confine himself to correcting some typographical errors and to removing a small number of material errors†(translated from the French).
