Recipes for making wines from virtually every fruit available in Britain at the time. The first edition was published in 1820. A basic book of home cooking offered by Acker. Merrall & Condit Company, a large grocery firm with several stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maryland. They also had a mail-order department. A section at the rear of the cook book is headed "Forty Recipes of the 'Four Hundred'" and contains signed recipes from the elite of New York society.

Slight wear to edges of covers, overall about fine. 288 pp., 12mo, original dark brown pictorial cloth with cover design and lettering in gilt and black. Compiled from letters to "certain Eastern journals - chiefly to the Cleveland "Leader & Herald" written during 1884 and 1886. The author was a fairly prolific writer of travel literature as well as juvenile fiction and short stories. The present text is intended as a "pleasant and readable book" that in some sense can function as a guide for visitors to the region. An expanded version was published the following year.

Text was originally published anonymously in London in 1830 in reaction to (and borrowing freely from) Otto von Kotzebue's "A New Voyage round the World in the Years 1823, 24, 25, and 26," also published in the same year. The Russian navigator's book made plain Russia's intention to extend their fur-trading operations in California and the "Englishman" sought to wake his countrymen to an awareness of the potential value of the land for England. Produced by The Allen Press in the manner of the original: handset types and English handmade paper printed damp on a London-made handpress. The woodcut initial is by the artist-printer Malette Dean.
