Unusual and amusing photograph from Russia, ca. 1980s, showing a tamed bear playing an accordion.  The bear, seated and in a leather muzzle, appears to be playing in a public square and is accompanied by an unidentified man and woman.  Minor wear along the edges and corners, some spotting to verso; overall fine.  7.25 x 4.5 inches (18.4 x 11.4 cm.).

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Study for the figure of the muse seated to the right of Apollo in Raphael's fresco of Parnassus, painted in c.1510-11 in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. In the fresco the figure is depicted holding a kithara, an attribute generally associated with Erato, the muse ruling over music.  Pen and ink on cream laid paper in an unknown hand, ca. 1650-1750, mounted to a secondary sheet. 9.5 x 11.25 in.[ 243 x 285 mm] matted, 14x 16 in. Unidentified collector stamp RU lower left (not in Lugt). Soiled, minor paper loss lower left, a few abrasions to surface, else fine.The Parnassus is a fresco painting by Raphael in the "Stanze di Raffaello" in the Palace of the Vatican in Rome, painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. It was probably the second wall of the Stanza della Segnatura to be painted between 1509 and 1511, after La Disputa and before The School of Athens, which occupy other walls of the room. Portrait of the German-born American artist and educator seated in an exhibit hall between works of his art.  By the eminent American photographer David Gahr, then in Brooklyn; Gahr's copyright hand stamp to verso.  10 x 8 inches (25.3 x 20.1 cm).  In fine condition.  Albers's pioneering work, both in Europe and in the United States, formed the basis of modern art education programs of the twentieth century.

Credit to Currier & Ives at lower left and titled in the margin, The Wonderful Albino Family / Rudolph Lucasie, Wife & Children, from Madagascar / They have Pure White, Silken Hair and Pink Eyes!! / Have Been Exhibited at Barnum's Museum, N.Y. for Three Years.  A rather toned and worn example with tears and losses around the edges, a few extending just inside the central illustrated panel, but nevertheless quite striking.  The Albino Lucasie family were European (the name is French), but P.T. Barnum, who discovered them at the 1857 Amsterdam fair, gave out that they were "Negroes from Madagascar" and claimed that their pink eyes remained staring even as they slept. He brought them to New York to work at his American Museum that same year. Original large format exhibition photograph showing Bernstein, Blitzstein, and Blake watching an unidentified pianist (who bears a striking resemblance to composer Elliot Carter) at the keyboard, taken at the "Rountable on Ragtime"at Tanglewood in Lenox, MA in the summer of 1951.  Board-mounted silver gelatin print with Kalischer's signature to mount and Stockbridge stamp and hand-numbering to verso of mount.  [Lenox, 1951]. A highly interesting collection of 25 letters from mostly American (some of them, European-born) composers active in the late twentieth century with comments on issues such as musical influence, listening habits and aesthetic preferences.We owe this treasure to Steven (or Steve) Juscik, the autograph-collecting music lover in Indiana to whom these letters are addressed.  He sent inquiries regarding the above issues to these composers.  We do not know Juscik's letters and cannot say whether they were identical, but the responses suggest that at least they followed some template.  The responses are dated between February 1987 and April 1993, and the chronology suggests that Juscik sent them out in batches, with a few individual ones in between.  The letter from John Cage, instead of coming up with a makeshift answer, refers him to his published manifesto "Silence."The following list of responses is alphabetical by composer.  Letters have horizontal folds but are in… Read More

(483 x 394 mm). One tiny corner chip upper right, else very good. A rare World War I enlistment poster, published in an effort to recruit African Americans into the U.S. Army. In this poster, a young Black man bids farewell to his sweetheart as his regiment bravely marches past in the background off to war. Patriotism is both literally illustrated and subtly implied with notes of red and white punctuating the flowers around the woman's blue dress.Upon the United States's entry into the First World War in April 1917, many African Americans eagerly enlisted in the military to exercise their civic duty, and to show their patriotism with the hope of being recognized as equal citizens. Over 20,000 Black men enlisted immediately following the declaration of war, and in May, with the enactment of the Select Service Act, the number skyrocketed into the hundreds of thousands. Each volume covers four months (from May 1928 to December 1929), but  the magazine was a monthly periodical and each "volume" was made up of four consecutive issues. Many Illustrated articles on very fine antiques. B&W photographs on most pages. Each volume in publisher's black decorated cloth with gilt lettering and ornaments. 9.75 x 12 inches (24.8 x 30.5 cm). Spine binding frayed to head and foot, ex-lib with associated stamps and with associated stamps and cards etc, a few pages loose or torn, otherwise in very good condition.

Stunning original silver gelating Sedge Le Blang photograph of the great African American contralto in her pathbreaking Metropolitan Opera debut as Ulrica, in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.2 cm). Photographer's stamp on verso with notations, edges slightly worn, overall fine. Anderson was a great favorite of Toscanini and, in 1955, broke the color barrier by becoming the first African-American to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. She remains a legendary figure in the history of opera, remembered for, among other highlights, her Lincoln Memorial concert and her performances at the inaugurations of both Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.The history of Anderson's Met debut is more complicated than often discussed. An English tobacco box bearing the kneeling captive iconography of the abolitionist movement, dating to the mid-19th Century. Height 4 x width 3.75 x depth 5.5 inches (10 x 9.5 x 14 cm.). Oxidation and pitting from age, handle is old but may not be original to the box, else fine.Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), a dedicated abolitionist and close friend of Thomas Clarkson designed the "logo" of the kneeling captive for the Society for the Abolition of Slavery in 1787. This was taken up by the American abolitionists, and in 1835 Patrick Reason, a young black engraver created a version of a kneeling woman that bore the caption "Am I not a Woman and a Sister?" This image, together with that of the infamous slave ship's hold, are without question the most iconic of the anti-slavery movement on both sides of the Atlantic.

Story of Louis Armstrong, inscribed by Armstrong on the front free endpage "To my life long Buddy Bill Davidson from Louis Armstrong." First edition in English, published in French, in Paris, in the same year. Hardcover, original blue cloth, title in gilt to spine, treble clef embossed to the upper board. Portrait frontispiece, 304 pp. Signed page heavily toned, half title with two small punched holes, spine rubbed with ends a bit frayed, somewhat shaken but solid. Robert Goffin and Armstrong were close friends and although the volume is credited to Goffin, the later publication of his notebooks makes amply clear that he was in fact acting as Armstrong's paid amanuensis, much of the included material being drawn from Armstrong's own manuscript autobiography. Retablo painting on tin, Mexico, ca. 1900, depicting a woman kneeled in prayer at the bedside of her husband or son, expressing devotion and appreciation to a deified figure – presumably Saint Raphael, the patron saint of healing – for protecting his health. Faint pencil notations along the lower margin. Rusting and deterioration throughout, losses and chipping to paint, particularly to the right. Overall very good.  10 x 7.15 inches (25.4 x 18.1 cm.).Retablos and ex-votos incorporate iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art, illustrating holy imagery of Christ, the Virgin Mother or one of the hundreds of patron saints. Many are a visual embodiment of the story that led to their commission, depicting one's survival from a threatening event or precarious situation, accredited to the intercession or protection by a sacred figure.
