Description:
Greenfield: A. Phelps, 1845. First edition. VERY RARE. 12 illustrations Small 8vo, original illustrated wraps. 8 pp Cover and pages are still bright, pages separated at hinge. This children’s book is called a chapbook, a more modern term that derives from the chapmen. Chapmen were pedlars who hawked their goods in towns and villages, and at country fairs. In 1553, Edward VI proclaimed that champmen must be licensed and Chettle, in Kind Hart’s Dreame (1592) wrote that “‘Chapmen are able to spred more pamphlets...then all the booksellers in town.’” Although they sold other wares, too, they always had cheap booklets, sometimes ballad sheets which eventually assumed the familiar form af a miniature booklet, with a paper cover thatusually had a picture. Even Shakespeare, in Henry IV, mentioned the chapmen as did Urquhart’s Rabelais in 1653. With the growth of small printers, miniature editions of old favourites could be printed. While chapbooks were ostensibly designed to… Read More

Description:
Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1943. Reprinted third edition. 8vo, full blue cloth lettered in gilt on spine. xxxiv, 741, Index. A fine copy. A FINE COPY OF THIS REVISED EDITION. In India, Dubois was at first attached to the Pondicherry mission, and worked in the southern districts of the present Madras Presidency. After the fall of Seringapatam in 1799, he went to Mysore to reorganize the Christian community that had been shattered by Tipu Sultan. His most notable achievement was his record of Hindu manners, customs and ceremonies. Although Dubois disclaimed the title of author, his collections were not so much drawn from the Hindu sacred books as from his own careful and vivid observations, and it is this, united to a remarkable prescience, that makes his work so valuable. Dubois's French manuscript was purchased for eight thousand rupees by Lord William Bentinck for the British East India Company in 1807. In 1816, an English translation was published, and about 1864, a curtailed… Read More

Berlin: Verlag Der Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1929. An important offprint, first edition. With mathematical formulas in text. Small folio, in the original orange off-print paper wrappers printed in black on both covers. 8 pp. Very fine, nearly as new. A RARE AND IMPORTANT OFFPRINT. EINHEITLICHEN FELDTHEORIE, which means "A Coherent Theory of the Electro-Magnetic Field" and is the title of a five-page paper of highest mathematical formulae which Relativist Albert Einstein worked on for ten years. His report is a purely mathematical extension of the general theory of relativity to include gravitational and electromagnetic phenomena. His relativity theory, which he phrased within only three printed pages, made time & space the creator of matter. When this paper on the Unified Field Theory was published, it was a headline story in the newspapers. Few, if any people, understood the complex mathematics, but many were fascinated by the thought that Einstein had possibly came up with a new… Read More

Philadelphia: Printed and sold by John Dunlap, [1779]. A very early issue of a Weatherwise American Almanac. Illustrated with the well-known anatomical woodcut of a man “governed by the twelve constellations,” and woodcut page frames. 12mo, original printed self wrappers, stitched. 15 leaves unnumbered including printed wrappers. A very well preserved little almanac, the wrappers somewhat worn at the corners, the rear with a little loss at the bottom outside corner, some expected toning and mellowing to the paper and some spotting but complete and very usable and with the original stitching still strong and tight. AN EARLY WEATHERWISE ALMANAC, and a competitor of Franklin's "Poor Richard". Abraham Weatherwise was of course a pseudonym, and one which was likely used by multiple almanac printers. They “ushered in the healthiest and most interesting period of almanac making” (Sagendorph, 116). Along with the typical astronomical data and weather forecasts, this almanac also… Read More
