Description:
Washington: Gales and Seaton, 1835. FIRST EDITION -- AN INSCRIBED COPY. Contemporary straight grain morocco, rebacked. An excellent copy inscribed to David Potts Jun from John Quincy Adams on a presentation slip inserted before the title page, and with the ownership signature of Ralph R. Ritzman on the fly-leaf. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED, of Adams' biography of Gilbert du Motier (1757-1834), until June of 1790 the marquis de La Fayette. Lafayette was a French military officer who participated in both the American and French revolutions. As a result of his services, he was twice granted Honorary Citizenship of the United States, once in 1824 and again, posthumously, in 2002, one of only six persons to be so honored. Books inscribed by Adams (1767-1848) are quite scarce. It is probable that the presentation leaf was placed into the book at the original binding, as it contains heavy offsetting from the title. Potts (ca. 1794-1863) was elected to the State House of Representatives of Pennsylvania before… Read More

Second printing of the authors famous work on "philosophic women," first printed in two volumes in 1664. Diogenes Laertius is the prime source of biographical information on Greek philosophers and the present volume, by Aegidius Menagius (Gilles Ménage of Angers, 1613-92), presents the commentator's elaborate notes on this author. Portland: Thomas B. Wait, 1805. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, top board nearly detached; sporadic browning, spotting on lower part of preliminaries, bottom corner of pages 9-16 torn. Ownership inscription of "John Lewis Jun., Baltimore," and his manuscript poem opposite title. First American edition. In 1738 at age 17, Akenside wrote this 2000-line didactic poem. It was first published anonymously in London in 1744, and "a cheap edition followed within four months, and announced for the first time the author's name" (DNB). Later, "Akenside entirely re-wrote his one long and famous poem." Although the revision, published in 1757 with the title "The pleasures of the imagination," was left unfinished, it went on to become his best-known and best-loved poem. Akenside (1721-70), a London physician, was also important for an early description of neurofibromatosis (see Garrison & Morton, 4015.1).

Description:
Verona: Pierantonio Berno Libr., 1745. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards; a fine copy, unopened. Later edition. Considered one of the best of Alamanni's later works, these didactic poems on cultivation, agriculture and bees contain more original material then previously printed. Alamanni (1495-1556) was an Italian poet and statesman. He was regarded as a prolific and versatile poet, and is credited with introducing the epigram into Italian poetry. La Coltivazione, written in imitation of Virgil's Georgics, is distinguished by the purity and excellence of its style. It was written at the French court of Francis I where Alamanni had fled for political reasons and where he became one of the leading poets. The first edition was printed in Paris by Robert Estienne in 1546.

Description:
Boston: John P. Jewett and Co., 1860. Pebbled cloth, decorated in blind, spine sunned, a bit worn at head and foot; some pencil annotations. Ownership inscription,"E.S. Read, Winthrop, Mass., July 11, 1879.". The present work emphasizes the importance of hygiene, nutrition, rest, and exercise as well as many other areas deemed by Alcott to have an effect on one's overall health. Alcott (1798-1859), a farmer's son, started off his career as a school teacher. After attending Yale medical school, he enjoyed a thriving practice, and wrote on the subject of hygiene, confining his works chiefly to dietary subjects. He was also an early advocate of birth control. Like his cousin Bronson Alcott, he continued his teaching, using controversial methods which relied on involving the students in the learning process. Alcott was quite possibly an influence on Bronson's daughter Louisa May Alcott, as books like her Little Men reflect these teaching methods.
