Louche women, in states of semi-undress (usually revealing their breasts partially), and attitudes befitting the boudoir, the bedchamber, the bath. With light-hearted captions, this is fetching fin-de-siecle softcore erotica. Unpaginated, with 26 tinted full-page plates. Original wraps bound in half green morocco over marbled boards. Some rubbing of leather, with surface loss areas near spine. Clean inside.

Book organized by railroad itineraries, as made sense at the time it was written. 31 routes described, including many to what was still true wilderness. Woodcuts of sites and hotels of day. Fascinating document of period tourism. Map has closed tears along folds, as inevitable given light paper used for map, but all there. Some shallow blistering along red spine, whose gilt is a little faded. Minor wear elsewhere on red cloth binding. Interior tight. Pages age toned. Clean except for pencil scribbles from child probably on ffep. A very good copy.

Original wraps bound in. A beautiful French Haggadah, printed on better paper, and surprisingly uncommon in commerce -- we could find no copies in commerce on the date of this listing, but no shortage of institutionally-owned copied listed on OCLC. Text is presented in both French and Hebrew. The artwork has the quality of Folk Art and perhaps a Modernist Primitivist influence. Wrap cover withcorner repairs, and light soiling, much of which can be erased, and some stains which can't be erased. Scattered stains on other leaves, but mostly clean.

Engraved frontis portrait of Bacon, engraved, extra, title page, title page, [14], 228, title, 36, title, [5], 62 pp. Condition: Rebacked long ago (19th century rebacking probably), with spine sympathetic to original leather but clearly different. Binding with abrasions, rubbing, scratches -- it looks fairly heavily worn. A few tiny leather chips along joints. Joints starting. Marginal repair to extra title page, more conspicuous on blank rear of leaf. Leaves generally with moderate soiling, which includes dampstaining, mostly but not entirely light, and age toning.

Lacking Plates 12 (Salon, by Pierre Chareau), 17 (Studio, by Francis Jourdain) and 37 (Girl's bedroom, by J. E. Ruhlmann). Plates are dated 1924, while the overall publication date is given as 1925. Color plates can be colorized photos, pure painting or drawing, or a hybrid of photo and painting. We assume the painted images were done by the decorator credited with the room, or by someone in that decorator's operation, but no credit is given for such artwork explicitly. Closed, oblong, 22 by 25 cm, extending to over 300 cm, with five folds and cover, with bright imagery of circus procession on both sides of concertina. While the inner panels have swooped shaped topsides, if one looks at the sides of the panels, they have bands of color that line up artfully. The color used is sunny and bold, and it captures the spirit of the mid-20th century circus well, while also in keeping with the prevailing style of children's book illustration of the day. The panels are of a sturdy card, as is the cover. Minor chipping along the joints, and the lightest of soiling there.

Baillie-Grohman was a famous sportsman and Alpine enthusiast, and this work is a memoir of his adventures mostly in the Austrian Alps, which offered the best Alpine hunting/shooting at the time. Baillie-Grohman writes with a real flair, conveying the adventure, fun and tension of the hunt, and he laces his writing with erudition and interesting digressions.

A richly illuminated Victorian manuscript notable for its great variety of ornamentation and done by a woman famous in her day. 4to. 28 by 24 cm. 59 leaves of heavy card, each with illumination. The illluminator, Edith Baird, was the "Queen of Chess" in her day. She wrote several books on chess problems, most notably, "Seven Hundred Chess Problems", Henry Sotheran, 1902, "The Twentieth Century Retractor", also Henry Sotheran, 1907. She was the daughter of a poet, Thomas Winter-Wood, who wrote under the name of "Vanguard" and who also was a chess master, as were two of Edith's brothers. The verse contained in this album do not bear titles. Edith Baird may have written some or all of the poems, but nothing definite can be said about their authorship. Other text illustrations, some of which are in color -- the color text illustrations are tipped in or mounted, as are a few plates. The binding has a moderate amount of soiling, wiht a light dampstain on the front and rear lower part of the cover -- this dampstain runs almost the entire length of the edge, and is about 3 cm to 6 cm in width, depending on where. A few other soil marks on the cover. Within, a light thin dampstain on a few early leaves, but otherwise clean, bright, etc. One blank leaf, upon which a plate is mounted, has a closed tear.
