Description:
A letter from Gordon Bennett, the New York Herald, to C. H. Meltzer a correspondent to cover the 4th Railroad Congress to be held in St. Petersburg on August 20th, 1872 in which Bennett is going to vacation and show up. He is writing this letter from his Paris apartment at 190 Avenue des Champs Elysees...….This letter has some stains and edge tears and as you can see from the pictures it has some conservator's repairs as well. Tearing at the creases but does mention the possible interview with General Annenkoff (see below for brief on Annenkoff). Folds present but a very nice letter. No information is available on the 4th Railroad Congress in St. Petersburg but none the less a rare and important railroad history document...despite its creases, tears and stains. Photos are NOT included.
James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (May 10, 1841 – May 14, 1918) was publisher of the New York Herald, founded by his father, James Gordon Bennett, Sr., who immigrated from Scotland. He was generally known as Gordon Bennett… Read More

Beughem, Cornelius Van. Bibliographia historica, chronologica et geographica novissima, perpetuo continuanda, sive Conspectus primus catalogi librorum historicorum quotquot ab anno MDCLI per universam Europam, typis prodierunt. First Edition, Amsterdam, Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1685.
12mo (128 x 72 mm). Contemporary (Austrian or Bohemian?) sprinkled calf, spine richly gilt. Some separation at spine but holding very nicely. Initials J. D. with date 1865, with additional inscription of "voy: m. melanges Jhin and de liet pan virginal de marville f p 23 p 323 ed 1725"
Beughem's most substantial single compilation, "in which he continued his attempt at a classified universal bibliography of works published since 1650. This time Beughem reached nearly 800 pages, in which he describes the works of nearly 2,500 writers. A substantial part of the book, however, is taken up by a so-called Museum Beughemianum, which would seem to be by many years the first iconography ... with a list of portraits in marbles,… Read More

Contemporary half-polished calf over boards, spine gilt; an excellent copy with respect to the interior of the book. Unfortunately the board is detached and nearly off. This copy is signed by Henry Oates and presented to him by his Aunt Ann Rayner in Dec. 1797. Ascended from Joseph Henry Oates to Lawrence (Titus) Oates who accompanied Scott on his expedition to the South Pole.
First edition, second issue as shown by the presence of the words "Wycliffe, 1791" from the figure of the sea eagle on p. 11 of Volume I. Mottled calf over paper boards with some damage to the leather on volume one and volume two. Occasional spotting but otherwise a nice clean and internally bright copy. This is a very… Read More

Boynton, Henry Walcott (1869-1947) Annals of American Bookselling 1638-1850. 1932, 8vo, 209 pp; New York, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; London: Chapman & Hall, Limited; Printed in US by The HaddonCraftsmen, Camden, N. J. First Edition, First Issue. No Dust Jacket. Nice tight copy with some corner wear, paper boards with cloth spine and some soiling of the spine.
"Boynton was interested in the colorful figures that populated the book world of early America and tells their fascinating story in an entertaining manner. His account begins with the establishment of the Cambridge Press in Massachusetts Bay in 1638 and ends in 1850, by which time the production and distribution of the book had entered the modern age. This is one of the best accounts of early American bookselling, printing and publishing." (Knoll Press).
Henry Walcott Boynton was born in 1869 at Guilford, Connecticut. Boynton was the author or editor of at least twenty-four books, often using his pseudonym, John Walcott. In 1893 he received his… Read More
