From the back cover: "A romantic and a populist, Jimmy Santiago Baca celebrates nature and creativity in Winter Poems Along the RIo Grande. These poems form an expansive meditation on Baca's spiritual life, punctuated always with his feet--repeatedly, rhythmically--as he runs the boulder-strewn trails along the banks of the Rio Grande each morning and contemplates his old life, his new love, his family and friends, those living and those dead, and where he prays to the Creator for the humility to become 'more river than myself.'

New York: Grove Press, 2009. First edition. Hardcover. NEW. 215pp. Octavo [21.5cm] Hardcover in dustjacket. NEW. From the publisher: "An award-winning memoirist, poet, and activist, Jimmy Santiago Baca has established himself as an inspiring and important spokesperson for the Chicano experience, continually giving voice to the voiceless. His first novel, A Glass of Water, is a gripping tale of family, loyalty, ambition, and revenge that offers us a glimpse into the tragedies unfurling at this very moment on our country's borders. The promise of a new beginning brings Casimiro and Nopal together when they are young immigrants, each having made the nearly deadly journey across the border from Mexico. They settle into a life of long days in the chili fields and in a few years their happy union yields two sons, Lorenzo and Vito. But when Nopal is brutally murdered, the boys are left to navigate life in this brave but capricious world without her. Lorenzo follows in his father's footsteps, devoting… Read More

New York: Grove Press, 2004. First edition. Paperback. NEW. 225pp. Octavo [21cm] Paperback. NEW. From the publisher: "Confirming his status as a writer of remarkable versatility and wisdom, award-winning poet and memoirist Jimmy Santiago Baca "continues to mine his experience, exploring conflicts between the rich traditions of Chicano culture and a modern world impatient with them" (Entertainment Weekly) in his widely praised debut collection of short fiction. In the title story, two siblings must face the brother who has betrayed them by selling his share of the family land and forsaking a centuries-old land grant, leaving an entire community vulnerable. In "The Three Sons of Julia," a long-suffering mother, whose one request is that all her sons come home to the barrio for the Fourth of July, watches her dream shatter as two of her sons—one a successful businessman with a white wife and the other a hard-drinking ex-con—nearly destroy her house, and each other, by the night's end. No doubt quite scarce, but printed during the worse possible period for sturdy pulp paper. "Peace be with you, brethren," said the foremost, a tall, saturnine looking being, apparently of middle age. Evans nodded shortly, but Gladden received the Prophet- for the speaker was none other than Joseph Smith, his companion being the astute Sidney Rigdon- with an humble enthusiasm painful to witness. "Brother Gladden," said Smith, his tones sounding still more owl-like, "this afternoon, as I knelt in the wilderness praying for speedy enlightenment of the Lord was laid upon my heart, and sweet words of balm were poured into my ears. Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 2002. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good +. 106pp. Quarto [27.5 cm] 1/2 black cloth with gray paper over boards. The boards are just a hair warped, and they are very subtly sunned at the edges. In the dust jacket with very light surface wear. Essays by Bright Eastman, Patrick Jablonski, and Frances M. Baer. From the dust jacket- "Widely acknowledged as the leading architectural photographer of Northern California, the late Morley Baer had an enduring passion for photographing barns, which he began doing in the 1950s. This book makes available fine-arts quality prints of sixty-eight extraordinary black-and-white photographs of California barns, thoseften ghostly but comforting shapes in a grassy pasture we glimpse as we fly down the freeway at seventy miles an hour." These photographs serve as a documentary record of a once common and now vanishing part of the landscape of California and the West.
