‎ Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Biological Records Centre, Cambourne, Cambridgeshire, 2005. First Edition. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Near Fine Condition. Illustrator: Louise Bacon. published in February, 2005 this provisional atlas shows mammal distribution based on a survey of the whole modern county of Cambridgeshire and City of Peterborough carried out by volunteers during 1998-2002 in addition to data from the Cambridgeshire Bat group, the British Trust for Ornithology's Winter mammals project (2000-2003), and data from the national Biological Records Centre, Monks Wood. Coverage may not be equal in all parts of the county, which has to be taken into account when assessing distribution. The presence of a species has been determined by a variety of means: sightings, tracks and other field signs, owl pellet analysis and road/predator casualties. The maps show distribution plotted at 2 km. by 2 km. square for the whole county. Where more than one species is… Read More

Description:
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, Devon, 1975. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. 'The Good Old Days' in country areas were ruled by local customs and folklore. This delightful book describes much of England's more important country lore, using contemporary accounts and adding historical material to show the richness of what inevitably lies behind us - often within living memory but not again to be experienced first hand. Old beliefs, superstitions and rituals, their origins long forgotten, lingered on as part of the collective wisdom of the country community, as they still do here and there, safeguarding family, farm and possessions, reflecting the natural longing for security and prosperity. Yet old irrational beliefs are deeply embodied in subconscious folk memory and hints of them are still heard in country conversations. At heart, England is still a rural nation. This book throws light on her roots. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" -… Read More

Science Fiction Book Club / Readers Union, London, 1970. First Thus. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Jacket design by Terry James; the first of three novels in the 'Galactic Federation' or 'Timepiece' series; "In one of the most unusual time stories to be written in recent years, Brian Ball takes the reader on a journey through the universe and produces some of the most fascinating concepts to deal with the relativity of time, and space, looking for the focal point of time itself. He blends science and fiction in an explosively imaginative form that whirls the reader into a Vortex of excitement. But perhaps the most disconcerting aspect of this novel is that the theories expounded by the author have been checked by a noted scientist and have been declared feasible." First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 144 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust… Read More

Description:
Tundra Books, Montreal, Canada, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover (Printed Boards). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Yvette Moore. writer Jo Bannatyne-Cugnet and artist Yvette Moore show family life on the prairies. "Each time a farmer plants a crop, it is an act of faith," writes Bannatyne-Cugnet. We witness how that faith is passed on from generation to generation through the months of the year. Grandparents teach the care of baby chicks, the planting of a vegetable garden, how to tell when grain is ripe. Children accept daily chores and special challenges: raising and grooming a show steer, and, in an emergency, midwifing a litter of pigs. Parents go out of their way, often very far out of their way, to turn hockey games, snowmobiling, fairs, auctions, Halloweening and the Christmas season into community events shared with neighbors. The text and pictures reveal Westerners as individuals who tower above the landscape; one likes these people, their optimism, their good nature,… Read More

Description:
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. The aim of this book is to show how investigators of aircraft accidents work, and how they contribute to the present high level of aviation safety. Therefore the cases which are mentioned briefly or dealt with in detail have been selected merely to serve the above purpose as representative examples of various aspects of investigation. It is meant to imply no criticism of performance that mishaps of some airlines, aircraft types or countries have more frequently been referred to than those of others. This is in no way to compare their safety for, in fact, some of the more notorious ones may have not even been mentioned while the frank and open cooperation of some of the best helped greatly to produce the most revealing examples. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 376 pages. slight mark to outer edges of pages - not visible internally. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Gilt… Read More

Illustrator: Barnard, Mary. black titles spine; illustrated by the author's b/w. line drawings; "teacher, counsellor, magistrate and occasional journalist, Mary Barnard wrote her diary whenever time could be spared from a hectic domestic schedule, for it is about the bringing-up of six children, three daughters, one son and two nieces, in a large house on the outskirts of Norwich just after the last war. With husband James, the City Treasurer, and her strong-minded mother, Nana Loornes, plus an entertaining succession of home helps, she struggled against the post-war food and clothing shortages to keep the three generations happy under one roof. Boydell Press, Ipswich, Suffolk, 1975. First Edition. Red Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. gilt titles spine; illustrated by b/w. line drawings; a volume in the 'Essex Library' series; "few counties in England can claim more eccentrics than Essex. In the past its impenetrable forests, lonely marshlands and isolated villages were ideally suited to the flourishing of singularity and bred all sorts of odd characters. The people of Essex, always noted for their love of individualism, were proud of these characters and regarded even the most ridiculous with good-humoured tolerance. They appreciated the originality of their views and admired the spirited way in which they pursued their fantasies and flouted the conventions. Before the advent of pop-stars and television, of course, eccentrics were also highly prized as entertainers. Their outlandish clothes, hilarious exploits and racy quips added zest to dull rural existences and supplied wonderful material for gossip."; small stain on… Read More

Description:
Blandford Press, London, 1997. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. Many people belong to cults and sects which appear strange, frightening or disturbing to others. Aimed at the general reader, this book reveals the beliefs and practices of many modern cults and sects, explaining their origins and attempting to answer the questions raised by their activities. Beginning with a brief history of major world religions, British journalist Barrett proceeds to present systematically a history of Christian "heresies" and movements. He moves from there to Eastern neopagan movements such as wicca, druidry, and theosophy and closes with studies of such self-help movements as neurolinguistic programming and Scientology. Barrett explores the history and beliefs of religions, the need for religion in human experience, and the subtle differences between acceptable and unacceptable beliefs. The conclusion looks at the organizations that "rescue" and "deprogram"… Read More

Description:
Farming Press Books, Ipswich, Suffolk, 1994. Second Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. This is an authentic first-hand account of life as a 16-year-old farm pupil in the early 1930s. In Suffolk, as elsewhere, the tractor had not yet displaced the horse, farms were full of labourers and the working day was long and hard. Hugh Barrett "lived in", received five shillings a week and learned to plough, build a stack, hoe beet and grind the pig food. His accounts of rabbits, rats and plagues of fleas are, like all the book, factually accurate and told with humour. The author sets out to convey "neither the bad old days nor the good old days" - just the year when he earned his first wage, the larks sang and the heavy tasks began to sort out the men from the boys. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. vi + 164. no Dust Jacket as published.. Brown titles spine. illustrated by b/w. drawings. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams.… Read More
