Description:
N.P.: Rockbook, 1978. First edition. Hint of sun toward edges, some tiny chipping to the lower front wrapper, near fine.. 8vo, unpag.; pamphlet in wrappers, stapled. Inscribed by the poet and signed on the inside front wrapper. This was Baca's first book, written in prison, containing eight poems and the essay "Thoughts On Leaving Prison." Abandoned at two, consigned to an orphanage as a small child, a homeless illiterate teenager, Baca was incarcerated for more than six years. In prison, he taught himself to read and write and began to write poetry and to publish his poems in small magazines. His first commercial book, Immigrants In Our Own Land, was published by Louisiana State University Press in 1979. He went on to win multiple awards and become one of the most significant Chicano poets in the US and an activist supporting at-risk youth and prison literacy. A powerful and deeply moving debut. With a portrait drawing of Baca on the rear wrapper by Emiliano Hinojosa.

An excellent letter, discussing Marlene Dietrich, for whom Bacharach was working as musical director at the time, as well as his own burgeoning career. "Work in my world here is best thats [sic] its ever been. Have had inside a span of two years about 14 hits and in this last year have been making them myself. . ." It was during this year that Bacharach formed his songwriting partnership with Hal David, one of the most fruitful collaborations of the era. The recipient, Sonia Shaw was a choreographer who had worked with Bacharach and Dietrich a couple of years earlier. The older of the two photographs is a 5 X 7 inch gelatin silver print showing the young Bacharach between Shaw and her husband, William Hitchcock. The second is a later 8 X 10 studio portrait of…

Description:
San Diego, 1945. Some tears and wear; very good. 21 pieces, various sizes and formats. The Mission Beach Ballroom, part of an ambitious development of the ocean-front property, was one of the premier West Coast dance halls of the swing era attracting top-tier talent. This collection derives from the hall's manager, Richard Costenborder and comprises twelve typed letters to Costenborder concerning the hiring of dance bands for the venue, two original contracts, two vintage photos of the hall, lists of attendees, ticket stubs, receipts for expenses, and a printed program from a 1945 event. The contracts are for appearances by Gene Krupa and Count Basie. The letters concern hiring the bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Eddy Duchin, Jimmie Lunceford and Earl Hines, among others. The printed program is from an appearance by the then-popular German-born trumpeter Henry Busse and his orchestra and has been signed by Busse and six of his musicians.

Description:
New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1930. First edition. Fine in a very lightly rubbed dust jacket, trace of a small circular label removed from the spine and just a touch of wear at the upper edge.. 8vo, 466pp, illustrated; pictorial endpapers; blue cloth stamped in silver and light green. Correct first edition of this maritime autobiography. Barnes, born in 1850 to a seafaring family in Newfoundland, spent most of his life as a sailor in one capacity or another, from the era of wind-powered sailing to modern steamships. A natural raconteur, who kept copious notebooks, his story was put into book form with the aid of his editor and dedicatee who, in addition to using Barnes's written diaries, recorded him on wax cylinders in order to better preserve the quality of his storytelling voice. The more common London edition, published by Cassell in 1931, omits her credit. This edition, further, is illustrated with fine wood engravings by Francis Shields. Exceptionally scarce in dust jacket.
