New York: Capitol Publishing, 1946. Poor. A 13 page accordion or concertina book, with color litho illustrations printed on to cardboard. It is missing the doll that would be seen through the die-cut window on the front cover. This book shows heavy wear, with rubbed edges, and missing surface litho on the edges of the binding. Cover creases. The interior fold out pages are in better condition, with some damage at the creases. Measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/2

[United Kingdom?], 1840. Good to very good. Some toning, dust soiling, wear to extremities.. A charming pocket-sized sketchbook belonging to Thomas C. Babb, with original artwork. There are three pages with artwork, including: a pastoral view of a mill with horse and carriage and man fishing in the foreground; a dancing bear and laughing pet monkey; a dog barking at a rearing big horned sheep, and a peaceful miniature scene of a horse grazing in front of dilapidated ruins. Rendered in pencil, ink, and watercolor. Single vol. (6.5" by 3.75"), 14 unnumbered blank pages, three with original artwork, some pages sometime excised including a leaf with ink ms., sewn in original handmade marbled paper wrappers, spine reinforced with a metal pin. Ink signature of Babb to inside of upper cover. Note that, regretfully, the final leaf seems to have been at one point torn away; the remaining stub reads, "A Catalogue of T.C. Babb's books". The first one appears to have been some kind of lesson book.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: F.A. North & Co., 1890. Very good. Tape repairs, toning.. New and Revised Edition of the American Line March, a stately piece for piano by Fred T. Baker that advertises the steamship company of the same name. A splendid reminder of the awe such steamships inspired in the American public in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Folio (14" by 10.5"), pp. 6, wrappers inclusive; original illustrated wrappers printed in red and black. Ink stamp of sheet music dealer Aschbach to upper wrapper. The American Line grew in 1886 when it bought the Inman Line, and merged with some of its peers in 1902 to form the International Mercantile Marine Company. 2011. The type of ink used in this sets caused some of the pages to adhere to one another, but are easily separated without and damage inflicted. Otherwise fine.. This collection of 28 paper dolls by the Jones Sisters, a pair of women, named Barbara Plummer and Barbara Barnett, who designed paper dolls. The majority of the collection are limited edition runs that were sold at the yearly Paper Doll Convention. The collection date from 1987-2011, with the bulk of them dating from the late 1980s. What is unique about these paper dolls are the outfits, as the majority of them are constructed from wall paper. The wall paper is used as 'fabric patterns' to form the base of the design, and are flushed out with ink and color markers. T. Colmor, 1950. Very good. Some rubbing and dust-soiling; bottom card has come loose from grommet closure.. Self-described as "An Introduction to Puzzles for the Very Young!", "On Time" consists of five illustrated die-cut cards fastened in the center with a metal grommet. Each spins, and the child must spin each card around into place to form the image. The image depicts a little blond boy looking at a pocket watch while playing with a train set, while a small puppy romps around him. The brilliance of the puzzle is, of course, the lack of puzzle pieces for young children to lose! Measures 10" by 9", verso blank. Housed in original illustrated folding portfolio.

Sixteen (16) full color plates plus black and white in-text illustrations. Features illustrated endpapers with the comedians Montgomery and Stone portraying the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow, respectively, in the 1902 musical, The Wizard of Oz. Illustrated by John R. Neill. Measures 9 1/4" x 7 1/4" Rubbings on back strip. Ex-Libris on reverse of frontispiece. Binding cracked but intact. One of the full color illustrations is detached. Two pages, 152 & 153, have a stain in the center of the page. This does not effect visibility of the text.

Bear was a Millerite - a person who believed in William Miller's teachings that Second Advent of Christ was coming in 1843-1844. Bear became disenchanted with Millers teachers and eventually joined the Ohio Shaker Community. He published this book to spread his knowledge that he "arrived at after half a century of meditation, research and study of the scriptures." Kalamazoo, MI, 1937. General wear. Newspaper clipping caused toning on two pages.. women, teaching, education, made by hand A school project done by Kalamazoo's Woodward Junior High's 14 year old Marian Eleanor Beattie (1923-2007) on what her future life and career would look like. The result of the project is a large, 81 page hand made book. As the title of the project gives away, Marian wanted to be a teacher as she liked children and "always thought it would be fun to give an assignment and correct the papers afterwards." When she was younger she had aspirations of being a music teacher, but since she couldn't play the piano, she decided on being an Elementary school teacher instead. A pair of copybooks originally belonging to a young girl named Susan Shoemaker who most likely lived in or around Philadelphia, PA (Walnut Grove) in the 1850s. The titles of the copybooks are: 'The American System of Penmanship in Three Parts: Ten Numbers, No. 9' (OCLC 4, Dec 2019) published by Uriah Hunt & Son in Philadelphia, PA in 1842, with the penmanship system itself by George J. Becker and 'Leary's Cheap Book Store Copybook' (OCLC 0, Dec 2019) published by Leary's Cheap Book Store in Philadelphia, PA, with no date. Each page of both books features a new sentence, the majority of which are quite lengthy and have a moral undertone. Coxsacki, NY, 1861. binding loose, leather on back strip has come off, some staining on front pages. The engravings within the album have been removed, this is evident by the three tissues guards that remain. Interior pages are toned.. A friendship album, entitled 'Album of Gems' which belonged to Matilda S. Bedell of Coxsacki, NY. The bulk of the entries in the album date from 1850-1852, and one of the first entries is by Matilda's husband, William. This date is done in pencil, while the entry is in ink, so it is possible it is wrong. Also featured within the album, is a dedication page, probably written by Matilda herself, but written from the perspective of the album itself, as though it was a living entity. The Bedell's were Quakers, and therefore most of the entries start with 'Sister Matilda', even though the authors are (mostly) not biologically related to Matilda. Princeton, New Jersey, 1836. Very good. Toned. Letter folds, remnants of wax seal to final page. Tape repair and short open tear to lower leaf.. Manuscript letter addressed to the Rev. John McCluskey from a Seminary student, William. G. Bell, who graduated from the Seminary in 1836 and became a pastor in Missouri. The letter discusses the Princeton Seminary and contains invaluable information about life there in the 1830s. For example, Bell describes the instructors as "very learned men" of "eminent ability & merit", and laments the imminent departure of one Wm. Bradley at the end of the next "session" (i.e. semester, perhaps). Bell praises the lectures of Dr. Alexander, but notes that Dr. Buch(?) has not yet "devoted his entire attention to his official duties". Bell is concerned by the lack of housing for students, stating that "Boarding is not only scarce, but excessively high, especially in private families. The booklet contains a series of illustrations featuring people doing different sports activities in late Victorian/ Edwardian dress. The activities has been organized by month, so for example, in January the figures are ice skating and in September they are hunting. The illustrations themselves are quite humorous, for example, the illustration of the ice skating shows the same man in the variety of ways he fell down on the pond. In addition to the illustrations each page has a corresponding poem. Eight (8) leaves from the travel and botanical specimen album of German immigrant Frederick Beringer who, along with his brother Jacob, founded the Beringer Wine dynasty in the Napa Valley in 1875. The pages of this album date between 1868 and 1882, and contain a multiplicity of material, most captioned in German by Frederick. The materials include: several arrangements of botanical specimens; a clipped stamp and postmark; newspaper clippings in German and English; a printed ticket to a masquerade ball hosted by the Arion Society in New York; a telegram from Jacob to Frederick ("Lady arrived be prepared Fred"); a printed ribbon from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and a fabulous gouache painting of baskets of Champagne addressed to the Arion Society signed by the celebrated German artist Anton Burger (1824-1905). Humorous look at fashion, the book consists of images of dress over time and simple verses, the page is then split in two and the reader can mix and match the top and bottom of outfits with verses. 8 1/4" x 11" wear on cover, some toning.

Scarce edition of a charming and lighthearted book by a doctor, consisting of sixteen pages of humorous short stories, jokes, or scenarios. To set the tone, it begins with a caution to its reader: "Warning!! If you have been CUT OPEN and the stitches have not been taken out, DON'T read this book... Something may BURST THROUGH!" (upper wrapper verso). This copy has been personalized; in the rear, two illustrations of patients reading in bed have been labeled "Jen" and "Dewey" in contemporary ink.
