In very good condition with some minor uniform toning. The sheet is adhered to a mat in several spots around the sheet edge on the verso with what appears to be translucent archival mending tape. In very good condition with some modern notations in pencil on the verso, minor cockling, and a 1-inch horizontal crack occurring in the space above the figure's right shoulder (left-top sheet area, recto). All condition points are unobtrusive and consistent with age. A tender and soft composition with excellent tonality.

Some general age tone, and minor mat tone around the perimeter of the sheet and well outside of the image area. Some moderate edge wear including several minor tears extending about 1/4-inch in from the sheet edge, also well outside of the image area. The image itself is in very good condition with excellent inking. A touching portrait, and a scarce impression.

Scattered moderate but light colored foxing throughout, with surface soiling and slightly attenuated colors. Presented in the original black lacquer and gilt wood frame. A hopeful moment before a well document tragedy, Baxter created several versions of this scene and its aftermath in various sizes. He was clearly captivated by the gruesome story which ended in the massacre of missionary Reverend John Williams and his party. As Williams and fellow missionary James Harris stepped ashore they were attacked with clubs by the native people and reportedly eaten by them, in one of the most well documented cases of cannibalism. Recently the decedents of Williams have taken part in a reconciliation ceremony in the South Pacific to mark the 170th anniversary of the death of Reverend Williams and James Harris.
