Description:
Sydney, 1915. [Scarce study of the waratah in decorative arts. This beautiful work contains illustrated examples of the use of the waratah in many fields of the applied arts, such as architecture (brackets, capitals, columns, ceilings, etc.), bookbinding, ceramics, electric fittings, glassware, ironwork, lace, wallpaper, dado, frieze, windows and woodcarving. Covers the history of the use of the waratah in the decorative arts, at a time when the surge to Federation and nationhood led to greater appreciation of and call for the utilisation of native flora and fauna as well as indigenous materials - wood in particular - instead of those imposed and imported from the Old World. From its first discovery the waratah quickly became popular as a symbol of all that was different and exotic in the new colonies - "the land of the Waratah", particularly in New South Wales althought it is a native of three states. Perhaps one reason for its popularity is the ease with which it can be stylised into an infinite… Read More

Description:
Sydney: Government Printer for the Technological Museum, 1915. First Edition. Important Australian design book giving historical examples of the utilization of the waratah in architectural decoration (brackets, capitals, columns, ceilings, et cetera), bookbinding, ceramics, lace, ironwork, wall paper, dado design, contemporary art nouveau applications and early colonial art. The author describes the use of waratah timbers in cabinetmaking, inlays and fine carpentry generally. ‘To the majority of Australians, the word "Waratah" has, perhaps, a rather limited geographical significance, for most people regard its application as referring to a plant only found somewhere near Port Jackson, and producing wonderfully gorgeous flowers. By the help of a work on this particular plant - ("The Glory of the Australian Bush"), it is hoped to make more generally known , that such restriction of geographical area is not correct, for both Victoria and Tasmania can claim a Waratah, as well as New South Wales; and… Read More

Description:
Paris: Meynial, 1925. First Edition. George Barbier. A complete and excellent set of the five annual issues illustrated with a total of sixty beautiful pochoir plates, complete with decorated pochoir title pages. 'Falbalas and Franfreluches' (Frippery and Finery: Fashion Diaries) represents a literary and artistic collaboration of unusual elegance and sophistication. French illustrator, George Barbier (1882 - 1932) spared no effort in the making of this beautiful collection, using the finest pigments and up to thirty stencils per print to create images of the highest quality reflecting fashionable themes of the day. The plates portray romance amidst exotic lands and ages past, including a native American idyll on the Missouri, a languid mistress cocooned in a hammock in the tropical Antilles, high baroque debauchery, and, of course, a myriad of lovers depicted in Paris at the height of the chic 1920s. Each annual includes twelve pages of fine writing by Barbier's contemporaries in the Parisian scene… Read More

Sydney: Privately Printed by the Beacon Press, 1953. This is copy no. 10 from a total issue of 200 standard deluxe copies, the first 40 of which are bound in quarter vellum. A remarkable published celebration of the Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock tradition, lovingly prepared with original tipped-in Japanese woodblock prints by Neville Barnett in a strictly limited edition of 200 copies. This is the last book published by Barnett, and was completed in the year of his decease. As a publisher, Barnett insisted upon the very best materials, with elegant type cut in Germany, printed upon textured hand- made paper by the highly respected Sydney artisan, Harrie Mortlock, owner of the Beacon Press. For binding his magnificent books, Barnett imported silk from China and brocade from Japan, combining these fine fabrics with pale English vellum for an immaculate result. Quarto, 27 tipped colour plates throughout; original quarter vellum with cream cloth boards, a fine copy.

Description:
Germany, 1851. First Edition. Two fine German broadsheets, advertising a travelling zoo. Among the many fascinating animals listed for exhibition, the Australian dingo makes a surprising inclusion. The 1840s and 1850s saw a distinct rise in the popularity of travelling menageries throughout the world; one thinks of the Beaumont-Waller exhibits held in Hyde Park in Sydney in 1847. A staple of such exhibits was a wide variety of animals from the far-flung reaches of the globe, with the exotic and the ferocious equally prized. Although we have not found much recorded about Paul Bernabo (‘from Italy' notes one of the broadsheets here), he had clearly learnt the lessons of showmanship, as can be seen from his use of a dramatic woodcut of a snake strangling a tiger. Indeed, it is apparent that Bernabo's travelling zoo brought an impressive range of wild animals to the German public, with tigers, lions and other wild cats from Africa, an anaconda from Brazil, a sable from Japan, as well as two crocodiles… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1930. A charming "album-jouet" ephemeral work using the dressing of cut-out dolls both to amuse young girls, and sneakily to educate them in the correct attire for study and school. In completely fine condition this charming and ephemeral work tells the story of Rouquette a gorgeous little girl who is beautifully dressed by her nanny. She and her sisters, messy Micheline and naughty Colette have to stay inside because of the rain, so they do some lessons causing lots of trouble. Unusually, on the fold out page all the cut out pieces provided to dress the girls and decorate their classroom are still intact; a rare children's pamphlet and a stylish example of juvenile Parisian fashion. Tall booklet, 327 x 160 mm; 10 pp. (rather strangely numbered, but numbered nonetheless); two of the pages comprising a fold-out of coloured cut-outs, the back cover a further fold-out with coloured illustrations partly for cutting out; reverse of back cover a further page of coloured illustrations, the front… Read More
