Description:
This is a first edition of The Prince of Pleasure and His Regency 1811-20, a biography of Britain's Prince of Wales/Prince Regent/King George IV (1762-1830). It was written by the English novelist and playwright J.B. Priestly and published in 1969.Priestly does a terrific job of capturing the atmosphere of the Regency, one of the most romantic in British history, as society saw extremes of elegance and refinement, war and brutality, creativity and invention. All of this revolved around George, or 'Prinny', from the time he became Regent for his incapacitated father in 1811, to when he became King George IV in 1820. Although many viewed him as a Big Fat Baby, or out-of-control party animal, he accomplished a great deal and was a major patron of the arts and architecture. Also portrayed in this book are the personalities of the giants of the age - Byron, Shelley, Sheridan, Wordsworth, Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott; Davy Faraday and Macadam; Turner, Constable and Cotman etc. This book is 8" x 10" and… Read More

Description:
The History of England (1848) is a five-volume work by Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay (1800-1859), the English historian and politician. His history was a seminal work and continues to receive both praise and condemnation--praise for its brilliant, clear writing and condemnation for its one-sidedness (Whig). It covers the 17-year period from 1685 to 1702, from Oliver Cromwell to the death of William III.I only have Volume I, which starts with Oliver Cromwell and ends with James II.
This copy is in bright red leather with a gorgeous silver design. It is from Heron Books, which used to use wood-free paper, although that is not stated here. It has an bound-in silk ribbon which is undisturbed--this book has not been read, or even opened.
Its only flaw is that the original owner placed a bookplate on the front endpaper. His/her name has been crossed out. You can either put your own label on top of that, or remove the plate (its easy--videos are available online).Other than that, it is pristine.

Description:
This is a first edition of Redcoats, written in 1976 by the British Army Colonel A.J.Barker (1918-1981). The sub-title is 'They made America safe for Americans, and Canada safe for Canadians.'
The Redcoats (British Regulars), were known as the Colonial bogeymen—vilified by the British at home, hated by the French and the Indians, and reviled by the Americans. They arrived in America in 1755 and proved themselves to be as adept at European-style warfare as they were at the sniper-based battles with Indians and frontiersmen. And, by weakening the Indians and halting the French expansion from the north, it was really the Americans they were serving. It is an intimate and intricate study of an interesting and influential military machine.
156 pages. The dust jacket (unclipped) has significant wear. There is a line of fading on the front cover. The paper has darkened. Otherwise perfect.

Description:
This is a first edition, and likely the only edition, of Dunkirk and After, written by the British journalist Gordon Beckles (Willson). Beckles was a real Fleet Street man and wrote several books, very quickly and with somewhat lurid covers (another one of this books was Tanks Advance!).
This book is undated and no other sources seem to know when it was published. But it's on wartime paper and he likely wrote it right after the evacuation, so it was probably published in 1941.
As you can see, the dust jacket says it's a day-to-day narrative, a behind-the-scenes record, with eye-witness accounts. 253 pages with lots of photos. It was the property of E Dorothy Chattanson, who signed the front endpaper. The dust jacket is tattered and there is fading to the book's cover. The inside of the book is in excellent condition.

Description:
This is a first edition of Lightly Poached, a 1973 novel written by Lillian Beckwith (1916-2004). Beckwith was English but, in the late 50s, she moved to the Hebrides of Scotland and lived there for 20 years, mainly on the Isle of Skye. She wrote 7 books about her experiences. They're semi-autobiographical, and mostly fiction. They are quite funny and were extremely popular. This is an online synopsis:
'The Lord puts the salmon in the river like he puts the berries on the trees. They're there for all of us, not just for the laird.' The way the Bruachites saw it, poaching wasn't a crime though you did have to keep an eye out for the local police. And it wasn't just fishermen like Erchy and Hector who were experts – even a visiting vicar had been tempted by the fat salmon that filled the island's streams and pools.
Like Lillian Beckwith's other books about life in the Hebrides, Lightly Poached is packed with the enchanting and hilarious adventures of her island friends."

Saul Bellow (1915 –2005) was a Canadian-American writer and academic who won the 1976 Nobel Prize, as well as a Pulitzer. He is the only writer to win the National Book Award for Fiction three times.
Bellow wrote 14 novels; More Die of Heartbreak was his 10th. It is the story of an intellectually gifted and philosophically tortured man attempting to work out his fate and worldview.
This is a first printing of the first edition, published by Viking, printed in the USA and distributed in Canada by Penguin. It is purple boards with cream trim and brilliant silver lettering on the spine.
It has never been opened—it creaked when I pulled back the front cover. Its only flaw is that someone stamped the underside with a star (see photo).

Description:
Irving Berlin (1888–1989) was unable to read or write music and could only play the piano in the key of F-sharp major; yet, for the first half of the twentieth century he was America's most successful and most representative songwriter, composing such hits as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Cheek to Cheek," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "White Christmas," "Anything You Can Do," "There's No Business Like Show Business," and "God Bless America." As Thousands Cheer, winner of the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award, explores with precision and sensitivity Berlin's long, prolific career; his self-doubt and late-blooming misanthropy; and the tyrannical control he exerted over his legacy of song. From his immigrant beginnings through Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood to his reclusive and bitter final years, this definitive biography reveals the man who wrote 1500 songs but could never quash the fear that, for all his success, he wasn't quite good enough.

Description:
In 1933, the great Irish writer George Bernard Shaw made his one and only visit to the United States, and addressed a gathering of the Academy of Political Science in New York. He made the speech entitled "The Political Madhouse in America and Nearer Home". In it, rather than use flattery to persuade, he used ridicule, shock and irritation to create change. As many in the room were insulted, the speech caused a stir and his publisher immediately printed and marketed the transcript. This is a first edition of that transcript.
It is just 63 pages. Bright blue cover with taped spine (it was published with a taped spine). The name of the artist who designed all of Shaw's books, John Farleigh, is printed on the cover. It's printed on thick, stiff paper.
The spine of the book has been split (see photo). But, aside from that, and a little fading to the right side of the cover, this book is in mint condition.

Description:
This is a first edition of Roger Berthoud's 1982 biography of the famous English artist Graham Sutherland.
Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) was notable for his work in glass, fabrics, prints and portraits. His work was much inspired by landscape and religion, and he designed the massive tapestry, Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph, for the re-built Coventry Cathedral. He worked as war artist, and famously painted a commissioned portrait of Winston Churchill, which Churchill so hated that his wife burned it.
Roger Berthoud (1934-2013) was a prominent English journalist who was also well-known for this biography, and that of Henry Moore.
This copy is in pristine condition, clean and thoroughly unmarked.
The dust jacket has a couple of scratches on the back and minor shelf-wear on the spine.

This piece was purchased in its brown wrapper, used, and then carefully re-wrapped. Someone who knew what he/she was doing made notes, and lyric changes, on the pages (lightly, in pencil). There are wear marks at the edges, but it is a lovely piece for a collector, and a player.
Priscilla's Week
was a series of pieces published in 1928, and there was a separate one for every day. They were written by Mathilde Bilbro (1870-1958). The following bio is from the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame.
The most prolific of Alabama composers, her published works include sheet form piano pieces, pianologues, song stories, piano duets and trios, and complete books of piano music collections.
