A printing of Beethoven's 1802 letter to his brothers, Karl and Johann, in which he attempted to communicate his feelings of rage, grief, and despair at the onset of his hearing loss. Beethoven was twenty-eight years old at the time. He never posted the letter, and it was not found until after his death in 1827. Bound in full brown paper with paper label. Fine. Illustrated with a medal of young Bembo as a title device; a fold-out reproduction of "Il Noniano"; an engraving from "Bembo's Works," Venice 1729; and a facsimile leaf of Aii of Bembo's "De Aetna," printed by Aldus in 1496. The Latin version is followed by an English translation by Betty Radice and a Postscript by Giovanni Mardersteig. The Latin is set in Griffo type, and the English and Postscript are in Monotype Bembo, both based on the roman alphabet developed by Francesco Griffo for Aldus. Bound in quarter-morocco with red paper over boards, gilt-stamped with the press's device. Some toning to spine, else fine in matching slipcase. Prospectus laid in.

Many of the pages are cut into cloud shapes, and interleaved with colored paper pierced with the shapes of stars and nebulae. With two pop-up openings, including a spiraling title-page. D'Ambrosio's binding of dark blue cloth spattered with white stars, forms a box for the book. Very fine. (2 7/8 by 2 1/4; 75x58mm).
