Spine chipped and showing light evidence of glue repair, front wrap nearly detached, a number of shallow chips to wraps not affecting printed matter. A few corners creased or chipped. Fair to good only. Second edition. We have also seen the first edition of this number. The main body of the text appears to be the same in both editions, however, the second edition has some changes in layout and fewer adds. While the first edition was almost certainly printed in 1881, demand for the second edition may not have arisen until the new year. A fine copy in very nearly fine dust jacket (minor rubbing to the jacket). FIRST EDITION. The first chapter discusses private academies in the 18th and 19th centuries and the first efforts to establish public schools. The remainder of the book is an account of the growth and administration of the public school system from 1885 to the time of publication. John E. Batchelor was himself a teacher and administrator in the Guilford County Schools. He has since worked as a consultant on school improvement and written several books including: "Race and Education in North Carolina: From Segregation to Desegregation" (2015).

Frontispiece dated 1919; front cover dated 1914. 139 pages, including frontispiece, plus several leaves of blank graph paper at rear. Original dark green cloth lettered in gilt. 19 x 12.5 cm. Corner of frontispiece clipped, not affecting image, else very good. Minor spotting to cloth, one word note on each of two tables (pp. 98-99), some very faint foxing. Signed by North Carolina cotton mill owner and executive, Haddon S. Mackie of Gastonia, on the front flyleaf. [Mackie was part owner of the Osceola Mill near Gastonia. He later became an executive at Textiles-Incorporated, which purchased the Osecola Mill in 1931.] Apparent second edition, later issue. The first edition was published in 1907. [18.3 cm.] A fine copy in original glassine dust jacket (spine panel sunned and slightly chipped at base; smudge to rear panel). SECOND EDITION. One of 1950 copies. The first separate edition was printed by the Distaff Side in 1939. The text was originally printed serially in the "Inland Printer" in 1933-34. The author, Peter Beilenson (d. 1962), was the co-founder, with his wife Edna, of the Peter Pauper Press.�

Minor wear to spine ends; tanning to endpapers from binder's glue. Jacket is sunned on spine panel and shows minuscule chips to ends of spine panel. Still an attractive copy. First American edition, first issue, with price of $1.00 on spine panel of dust jacket. [A later issue is found with the price of $1.25 added to the dust jacket.] Preceded by the London edition of the same year.

[18.1 cm.] A fine copy in original glassine dust jacket (tiny chips to base of spine and scratch to front panel). FIRST EDITION. One of 500 copies. Issued as a keepsake on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Society of Printers.�

Karlsruhe: C.F. Mullers, 1819. Two volumes in one, as issued. [5] leaves, 294 pages, [2] leaves, 52 pages, plus plates. The first leaf is a collective title page for both volumes. The second part bears a separate title page. Complete with 23 lithograph plates, including twenty-one double-page plates and two folding plates. One of the plates is a map; the remainder are diagrams of military movements. Original publisher's illustrated light boards, with a lithograph decoration on spine and a different lithograph vignette on each cover. [14.3 cm.] Housed in original cardboard slipcase covered in marbled paper, with printed paper spine label, and semicircular cut-out at head of front and rear panels (to ease removal of the book from case). A very good or better copy. Hint of wear to spine ends. Moderate soiling to small portion of each board (corresponding to cut-outs in slipcase), with no impact on illustrations. It is addressed to Doug O'Dell, who was the proprietor of Chapel Hill Rare Books in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While the inscription is unsigned, the handwriting is identical to another item in my inventory that was signed by Phelps on the same date. The papers in this collection were written for a symposium held in honor of Phelps on the occasion of his retirement from Duke University, where he was a longtime professor of German. Phelps was also a pioneer in the use of computers in foreign language education. Light soiling to covers; very light foxing to prelims and final plate (bound after the last page of text); still a respectable copy. FIRST OF THIS ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Copies in the original cloth are a bit scarce; the work is more often found in printed paper-covered boards. The text was originally printed as an article in the "North British Review" (Nov. 1863), and several separate editions followed. Minor marginal foxing to the frontispiece, not affecting the photograph; faint foxing to the title page and a few scattered spots elsewhere, but a clean copy overall. House in custom-made cloth slipcase with gilt-lettered green morocco spine label. Early bookseller's ticket (John Mowat, Dublin) on rear pastedown. Signature of Edward K. Original maroon suede wraps with gilt lettering on front cover. 23 x 16 cm. The yapp edges of the wraps are bent as usual and are chipped to the text block in a few places. Text is mildly toned; the lower edges of most leaves are slightly bumped. Still, very good. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on a special, partially printed presentation leaf tipped in before the frontispiece. Browne addressed this copy to Mrs. Martha E. Rumbaugh and dated his inscription, April 8, 1912. [23.7 cm.] Bright and near fine in very good publisher's cardboard slipcase. Also issued with glassine dustjackets, not present. Small bookseller's ticket at base of front pastedown in each volume, with minimal impact on illustration; short marginal tears to lower corners of two leaves, in no way affecting text; still a nice, clean set. Slipcase shows a small amount of wear and a mark to the paper label, but is sound. FIRST EDITION. A history of Virginia told in a series of biographical sketches of prominent figures.
