Original 1951 Armand of Havana photograph of the legendary entertainer shown in a sumptuous Christian Dior gown and gloves, boldly signed and inscribed in black ink "To Paul / Amicalement / et son devotee /  Josephine Baker / 1963."  In fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.7 x 25.5 cm).Baker was most noted as a singer, while in her early career she was a celebrated dancer. She was given the nicknames the "Black Venus" or the "Black Pearl", as well as the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations, while in France she has always been known in the old theatrical tradition as "La Baker."  She performed in pre-Castro Cuba at the Teatro América in Havana from November 29, 1950. Billed as "Miss Gertrude Hoffmann Announces Les Ballets Russes," the program features a lushly printed cover illustration, writings about various dances and dancers accompanied by halftone photographs and drawings. 24 pp. Original cord binding. Bound collection of 6 concertinos for 4 violins, viola, cello, and basso continuo in score, copied from a manuscript at the Conservatoire de Paris, as prepared for and subsequently inscribed by Sergei Diaghilev. Long attributed to Italian Baroque composer Pergolesi, these pieces are a famous case of reattribution within the canon of classical music, having been identified in recent decades as the work of the Dutch composer and statesman Count Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer. Half a century before this musicological consensus had been established, Diaghilev wrote his opinion in an inscription on the cover of the present manuscript (translated as follows from the French):"In my opinion, only the sixth (last) concertino was composed by Pergolesi. The others are of different authors who have nothing in common with him. Budapest: Rózsavölgyi & Cie., [1909]. First Edition in score. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Miniature score of Bartók's Quartet no. 1, op. 7 (BB 52, Sz 40, W 20, Somfai 308.) [PN] R. & Co. 3287. 38 pp. 5.25 x 7.5 inches (13.5 x 19 cm). Two slight creases to the cover, some toning; overall in fine condition.The work was at least in part inspired by Bartók's unrequited love for the violinist Stefi Geyer - in a letter to her, he called the first movement a "funeral dirge," and its opening notes trace a motif which first appeared in his Violin Concerto No. 1, a work dedicated to Geyer and suppressed by Bartók for many years. The intense contrapuntal writing of this movement is often compared to Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14, the opening movement of which is a slow fugue.

Addressed on the reverse in Dukas's own hand to Henri Prunières and signed "Paul Dukas." The letter apologizes for missing a visit from the addressee and from "Monsieur Béla Bartok, whose acquaintance I would have been delighted to make. All the more so since I must respond to your kind invitation for Saturday. I have to be in Valenciennes on Sunday to help with the concert of the Societé du Conservatoire there. And if I don't take the train at 5:10 in the evening on Saturday, I will have to get up at 6:30 to leave on Sunday morning! A pair of woodcut engravings, "Blake: a fragment" and "Blake," inscribed respectively "for Sylvia & Ted" and "for S. & T." each signed "Baskin."  Fully backed to paper support with small tears and losses to periphery of fragile tissue just outside of the plate, mounted together and archivally matted.  Leonard Baskin had befriended Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes when they were living in Northampton, MA, in 1957-1958. Baskin taught printmaking and sculpture at Smith College from 1953-1973. The friendship flourished after their return to England and Baskin continued to collaborate with Hughes for decades, indeed right up to Hughes' death in 1998. These prints were engraved as part of Blake and the Youthful Ancients (1956), fifty copies of which were printed, the book consisting of 18 wood engravings of William Blake and his followers.

Rare and striking 1930s French Rockfellson facial douche, together with the original box. Transparent plastic moulded mask, aluminum tubing, illustrated container. In fine condition, apart from normal wear to the box and to the plastic mask (including a custom cut in the mouth, most likely to make it more "comfortable" during the treatment) and aluminum tubing.  Box 10.4 x 7.5 x 4 inches (26.5 x 19 x 9.5 cm.).The transparent moulded plastic mask was sold to women as a home beauty treatment, designed to massage and cleanse the face by connecting the mask's hose to a running bathroom faucet.

Portrait of the British conductor in his later years in profile seated at his desk studying a score.  8.75 x 7.25 inches (22 x 18.2 cm).  Mounted to rigid backing, in fine condition.Sir Thomas Beecham founded both the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1932) and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1949).  He was never happy with being a salaried employee of any orchestra and preferred to gather his own ensembles instead.

Rare and important ivory ticket pass to the London Beethoven Quartett Society where the monumental String Quartets were first performed as a cycle.  Handpainted on pink-stained ivory, the pass reads "Honor to Beethoven," the chair number "55", and "Quartett Society."  37mm, 4.38g.  Crack to center, else in fine condition.   Founded by London musician and impressario, Thomas Massa Alsager, the Society was first a private place for musicians to rehearse and study the quartets.  In 1845 Alsager invited the public to hear a performance of all 16 quartets and this pass dates from this historic event, the first performance anywhere in the world of a complete cycle of Beethoven quartets, held in the Beethoven Room at 76 Hartlet Street in 5 sessions.  According to Mahaim, "Forty-three years were to lapse before a similar venture took place in 1888-89 in Dresden with a complete cycle organized by Eduard Rappoldi.  And sixty years were to pass before the cycle was… Read More
