Description:
London: Macmillan and Co, 1867. First edition. Near Fine. Original dark blue cloth over boards, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt. Spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, brown coated endpapers. Two small bookplates on front paste-down. Collating xx11, [2], 596, including portrait frontispiece, 24 illustrations on 23 plates, 2 colored maps (1 large folding). Some very light wear at spine extremities, otherwise Near Fine. A classic of exploration and big game hunting. The discovery of the Albert N'Yanza, the origin of the Nile, was the most remarkable achievement of Baker's adventurous career. This present work complements his earlier book by giving a summary of the Nile system derived from Baker's year-long exploration of all Abyssinian tributaries of the Nile. A highly desirable copy, particularly with all maps and illustrations in place. Hilmy 1, 50; Gay 2578; Czech 11. Near Fine.

Description:
London: T. Birt, 1828. First edition. Single sheet measuring 250 x 185mm and printed in two columns to recto. Some edgewear to margins not affecting text; a bit of foxing and toning largely confined to margins. A scarce and delicate survivor, OCLC documents only one example (at the National Library of Scotland). The present is the only example on the market. The Dandy Wife is narrated by a man who aimed "to choose me out a loving wife" at the age of twenty-one, but whose experience becomes a warning to "all young men of high renown": "If you want a tidy wife, Beware of a boarding school." What unfolds is a satire of how the marriage economy is affected when women have access to knowledge -- intellectual and physical -- and how by meeting a man's superficial expectations a woman can fulfill her own more pressing needs. Thinking that a boarding school girl will have the innocence, submissiveness, and domestic skill he desires, the narrator selects a wife from among their ranks. Thinking only of what… Read More

Ten large octavo volumes (234 x 160 mm) bound in late twentieth century three-quarter tan morocco over marbled boards ruled in blind. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company Publishers, 1901. First edition. Near Fine. Third state, with the copyright notice having the publisher's name measuring 1 25/32 inches in length. Original olive green cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine. Color pictorial label on front cover. Back cover with title stamped in blind. Armorial bookplate of Clayton Smith on front paste-down and ink inscription dated 1905 on free end-paper. Twelve color plates, numerous black and white text illustrations. A bright and near fine copy. This "electrical fairy tale" expresses Baum's lifelong fascination with scientific discovery. The protagonist is actually the author's second son, Robert Stanton Baum, to whom the book is dedicated and who recalled this boyhood interest in electrical gadgetry in an autobiography published in The Baum Bugle, Christmas 1970 and Spring 1971. Overshadowed by some of Baum's better known works, inlcuding the Oz series, it is nevertheless an important and representative work. The… Read More

London: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1798. First edition. Near Fine. Bound to style in modern half calf over modern boards, with morocco and gilt label to spine. Renewed endpapers. Measuring 210 x 125mm. Collating viii, 518, [2]: complete, including final leaf of adverts. Small paper flaw to margin of 509-510 not affecting text and faint dampstain to upper margin of preliminaries, else a pleasing and clean copy internally. ESCT reports 15 libraries with copies (8 of those in the U.S.), and it does not appear in the modern auction record. Currently this is the only copy on the market. Notable for being an eyewitness account of Revolutionary France from the perspective of a woman, at a time when "British travellers to Paris were steeped in the highly emotional culture of sensibility...in pursuit of the picturesque" (Thompson). Description:
Paris: Les Editions de Minuit, 1952. First edition. Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the first trade edition, following the 35 signed copies. A fragile softcover book, uncommon in this condition. Spine slightly toned and a crease running the length, slight nicks at the spine ends and a small stain on the rear wrapper. Pages a bit toned, as usual, otherwise an excellent copy internally. One of the masterpieces of 20th century theatre - Beckett's hugely influential tragicomedy. Beckett had originally written the play in French between the Fall and Winter of 1948-1949. (Beckett would not translate the play into English until its London premier, in 1955) In fact, this edition of the play - the Minuit edition - was released in 1952, before the play's first performance the next year. Beckett was thought to have been inspired to write the work after viewing Caspar David Friedrich's painting "Mann und Frau den Mond betrachtend" (Man and Woman observing the Moon). Upon its French premier, the play was met… Read More

London: John Pearson, 1871. First Thus. Facsimile reprint edition of the 1724 third edition of the Plays and 1735 edition of the Novels. Finely bound by Sotherans in half speckled calf with ornate gilt and morocco to spines. Top edges brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. Morocco bookplates of W. A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey to front pastedowns of each; bookseller's ticket of W. G. Foyle to rear pastedown of each. Measuring 105 x 175mm each. Complete, including frontis. Internally fresh and unmarked. A lovely example with trivial wear, most noticeably to the upper front corner of volume II and the spine ends of volume IV. Most often noted as the first professional woman playwright in England, Aphra Behn used her literary works to promote the employment of women (casting a notably higher percentage of actresses than her male contemporaries), to depict the social and economic precarity of women in her time, and to present women writers as equal in intelligence and irreverence to men. He, therefore, who can remember even the last flicker of the expiring embers of the Coaching Era must have exceeded that uncertain period of life known as middle age; while, if we would hear from living lips of the golden age of Brighton stage-coaching, as it was from, say, 1825, we must listen to an octogenarian. London: printed by Isaac Jaggard, 1625. Second and first English language editions. One of the classic early works of world literature and a source that Shakespeare drew from. This first translation into English is generally attributed to John Florio.
