New York: Paul B. Hoeber, 1938. Minor bump front top edge. Prior owner's script stamp front and back endpapers. Crisp and clean throuighout. Numerous plates and figures through the text. Lindbergh was an inventor, among his many other attributes. He, of course, is best known for winning the Orteig prize in 1927 by being the first aviator to fly non-stop from New York City to Paris. He became interested in keeping organs alive outside the body when his sister-in-law developed a fatal heart condition in 1930. He worked with Nobel-prize winning Alexis Carrel in the study of organ perfusion. He invented the "Model T" pump, a glass perfusion pump, that is credited with making future heart surgery possible. He and Carrel described an artificial heart in the book and their work with perfusion eventually led to the construction of the first heart-lung machine decades later. 221pp.. First Edition. Annapolis, Maryland, 1879. Written in long-hand on stationery from the State of Maryland Executive Department, Dec. 9, 1879. " Dear Sir, I regret very much that I will be unable to accept the invitation so cordially rxtended to me, to be present at the reception of General U.S. Grant in the City of Philadelphia on the 16th instant. I have the honor to be your able-servant, John Lee Carroll". Addressed to Joseph H. Paist, Esq, Phila. We find that there was indeed a parade and reception for the Civil War General and US President on 16 December, 1879 in Philadelphia. Carroll served as Governor of Maryland from 1876-1880. He was Governor during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, with widespread rioting in Baltimore requiring Federal troop intervention. See photos of the letter. . Signed by Author.
