Firenze: David Passigli, 1845-6. First Edition. Full Morocco. Near Fine. Uncommon title with 100 bright and hand-colored plates depicting major figures and events of Italian history. Each plate accompanies generally eight to twelve text pages relating a tale or biography of the figure(s) depicted. The articles are ornamented with lovely ornate borders which vary in color and design from one piece to the next. The work itself was issued at a time when Italian consciousness was finally being roused with the first rumblings for unification, which would finally come to fruition two decades later, but it is significant that in this work the heros and heroines highlighted come from all over the Italian peninsula, including Naples, Venice, etc. then separate kingdoms, principalities, or under Austrian or Church control. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. iv, 84 pp. Lavish color illustrations, many full page, others underlaying the text as was a winsome feature of this series of young adult biographies of French heroes and leaders from the early twentieth century. The Maurice Leloir illustrations for this biography of Cardinal Richelieu are arguably the finest of this series. A few tiny blisters on the decorated boards. Top corner with bumping. A very good copy or better.

1837. Full Morocco. Very Good. Eleven exquisite, highly detailed watercolors of battle scenes, landscapes, waterfronts, etc. 12mo. 16 by 10 cm. 48 leaves, writing on virtually all rectos and versos. Specifically, the watercolors include a portrait of Napoleon, a bucolic landscape with a seraph, a sheperdess in a bucolic setting, a ship in a coastal seascape, a panorama of a botanical garden at Avranche, a hilly panorama, a view of St. St.-Michel, the battles of Waterloo, Montreau and Arcole, a bouquet of flowers. In addition, there are decorative devices, most notably on the title page, and every page is framed by an unique ornamental band. The poetry, all presumably by Caillon, is written in a neat, cursive calligraphic hand. A common thread running through the writing is Normandy and the war, and Caillon pays homage to the former Emperor. Mainly, though, this is a manuscript of extraordinary phyiscal beauty.

Many full page color plates, with black and white text drawings by Caldecott. Binding is a bit shelfworn and a bit grubby. Hinge cracked. Some light soilage here and there on pages. Bookplate on FEP.

Cloth. Fine. N.d., circa late 1800s. Folio-sized. 38 by 31 cm. Unpaginated, [36] pp., including title. With stunning borders, mostly in the Medieval style, often illuminated, plus two watercolors of castles, and mounted illuminated leaf of vellum for title, and a mounted vellum leaf painting of a troubadour. This manuscript or homemade book was quite possibly the creation of a French student, who in the text described, always in a calligraphic quality cursive, chivalry, Medieval commerce, literature, education, heraldry, armaments, architecture, guilds, music and policing, the Inquisition, and hunting. The synopses are well-done for what they are, but it is the visual dimension that makes this manuscript a treasure. The pages are heavy card. The initials on the front board are M.T. (Callendier might be Tallendier). On the rear board is a gilt insignia for a school, partially rubbed out.

Two volumes, xxiv + 408 pp., viii + 396, 44 full page aquatints in all. 3/4 modern calf binding. These two volumes by Alexander Campbell are part of the great travel illustrated plate book tradition that reached its pinnacle in the early nineteenth century before the advent of steel engravings, which made illustrations more readily available but lacked the warmth, beauty and artisanship that characterized the various techniques of printed illustration preceding. This was also a time when Scotland had achieved a certain ascendency, with its eighteenth century Enlightenment having dispelled its courser stereotype from earlier times of clan strife. Small folio, 32 by 21 cm. 226, [8] pp. Illustrated with 84 drawings, some simple geometric diagrams, others, somewhat more elaborate and with a more decorative quality (although not necessarily so intended by the drafter), and many tables. With a rather extensive table of content (Indice) at the end, running 8 pages. A beautifully bound full morocco copy, with a quarter morocco slipcase. Binding by "Scroll Club", NY. 8vo. 23.5 by 14.5 cm. xxiv + 489 pp., 21 hand-colored colored plates, and 22 wood engravings. The binding is a lush green, with gilt ruling on the boards and in the spine compartments within the five raised bands, and ornate gilt turn-ins. While there is minor occasional spotting of the leaves, the bright and fundamentally unsullied interior benefitted undoubtedly from the slipcase and chemise protection, as did the binding, which uncommonly has no sunning of its spine. The slipcase morocco is browned or sunned, as this was exposed to the atmosphere, but its leather is otherwise healthy, with a few minor rub spots. the green cloth of the slipcase boards has a small amount of fabric loss, and wear along its edges, including shallow dinging.… Read More
