Description:
581-599 pages with tables and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 26, Number 5 complete issue. First edition. Anthropological archaeologists often employ ethnohistoric and ethnographic data to interpret the archaeological record. Of special concern to the subdiscipline of "action" or "living" archaeology is the problem of devising reasonably accurate methods for estimating the population of a site or of a prehistoric household. Techniques developed by various researchers are here summarized and critiqued. Then the available ethnographic evidence on household size and dwelling area in Mesoamerica, including data from two Guatemalan highland communities examined especially for this paper, is surveyed. On the basis of this evidence, new estimates are offered for placation in the Mesoamerican context. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, rubbed and creased else very good.

Description:
53-65 pages with tables and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume IV, Number 1 complete issue. First edition. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize cultural change as a dynamic process, not simply as a succession of structural states. The first step in this procedure is to recognize the need to consider not only what changes take place but also how they come about. To understand how a change occurs we must first understand the ongoing processes by which a culture is maintained. Recent discussions of social structure and of cultural change suggest some points of departure for this analysis. Description:
569-578 pages with figure and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") bound in brown pebble cloth with gilt lettering to spine. American Anthropologist Volume 55 complete issue. First edition.

With the founding of the Mission of San Luis Rey in 1798, an influx of Christianity has led to a decline of the Luiseno Indian culture in southern California. A majority of the rites and rituals of the Luiseno culture are infrequently observed or practiced. The author argues, "one hundred and fifty years of acculturation have not sufficed to snuff out all of the old social structure and religion" (p. 569). He also notes that although majority of the Luiseno people are Christian, the old native religion, along with its rites and rituals, is crucial to all that remains of the culture core. Two specific Luiseno ceremonies are highlighted in the context of this article. First is the installation of religious chief, called scheiyish noti, and the second is the clothes-burning ceremony, known as tchoiyish. These… Read More

Description:
10-37 pages with diagrams, tables, photographs, drawings and bibliography. Quarto (10 1/4" x 7") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. American Antiquity Volume XV (15) Number 1. First edition. A study of the use of gold and silver by the ancient inhabitants of southern Peru and Bolivia has been made by Lothrop (1937). He found that in the region of the southern coast the available material from Paracas and Nasca was adequate, but that there was very little satisfactory material from the later periods, such as Ica. Many of the objects in museum collections that purport to be from Ica are of questionable origin, and many objects actually from Ica are thought to be from Lima, Moche, etc. This not only prevents a satisfactory investigation of the use of metals in Ica, but confuses a study of their use on the central and northern coasts. The present study is an attempt to supply more exact information about the use of metals in the vicinity of Nasca, Ica, and Chincha. Max Uhle made very careful… Read More

x+428 pages. Quarto (11 1/2" x 8") bound in original leather binding with raised bands and gilt label to spine. Edited by Antonio Tenreiro. In double column pages issued without map. First published in 1614.
Fernão Mendes Pinto was a Portuguese explorer and writer. His exploits are known through the posthumous publication of his memoir Pilgrimage Peregrinação in 1614, an autobiographical work whose truthfulness is nearly impossible to assess. The tale of his adventures was written after the fact, according to Pinto's memories of the events, and for that reason it may be open to doubt as a completely accurate historical source. However, it well documents the impact of the Asian civilizations on the Europeans and constitutes a perfectly realistic analysis of Portuguese action in the Orient, far more realistic than the one made by Luís de Camões in The Lusiads. The most controversial of his claims is that of having been the first European to land in Japan and the introduction of the arquebus.… Read More

First Italian edition of the original Spanish edition by G. Domenicus Tarsia, extremely rare. This Italian translation is a somewhat free adaptation, which was enhanced with woodcuts. Selenus edited the main content of his chess work from the printed Italian translation. His textbook contains the rules of the game, strategies and openings. Don Bartolomé de Alva was a Novohispanic mestizo secular priest and Nahuatl translator. Alva was one of the youngest children born to indigenous Doña Ana Cortés Ixtlixochitl and her husband, a Spaniard, Juan Pérez de Peralta. Alva may have been the youngest, or he may have had a younger sister, but records are unclear. He was born around 1597, which appears to be around the time his mother became the cacique of Teotihuacan.
In 1634 Alva wrote and published a Nahuatl-language confessionary, Confessionario Mayor, y Menor en Lengva Mexicana (A Guide to Confession Large and Small in the Mexican Language), for the use of priests administering confession to Nahuas. This book is a script to the Catholic Sacrament of Confession… Read More
