Description:
New York: Heron Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 199 pp + illustrations, with frontispiece. A hors commerce copy from the special edition of 200 printed on American Handcraft paper, bound in balloon cloth, and signed by author and illustrator on limitation page. Rather than being numbered, this copy is designated "B" and was presumably an author's presentation copy, as it is additionally inscribed (without salutation) "with best wishes for a successful year with the N.Y. Soc. for Sup. of Vice / from [name uncertain] and myself / Erskine Caldwell." It seems likely that this inscription dates from a few years after the publication date. Although The Bastard was successfully banned for obscenity in Caldwell's adopted home town of Portland, Maine, it was not until 1933, with the publication of God's Little Acre, that he became a target of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. Apparently the recipient of this copy didn't care to actually read the book, as many of the pages… Read More

Description:
Sacramento: State Office, 1881. 72 pp, illustrated with small wood engravings, in original lavender printed wrappers. Some chipping to spine, old tears and tape repairs to back wrapper, else very good. Matthew Cooke was in the business of manufacturing fruit boxes in the 1870s when California's apple crop was devastated by Codlin moths. He began studying entomology to find defense against the moths (and ensure the security of his business) and quickly became an expert on a range of pests affecting California's fruit crops. He was appointed Chief Executive Horticultural Officer of California in 1881. This report, prepared at the request of the State Board of Horticultural Commissioners, describes the life cycles of the major insects damaging fruit crops (moths, scale insects, mites, caterpillars, borers, aphids, etc.) and recommends remedies for dealing with each. It also includes the text of new legislation intended to protect and promote the horticultural interests of the State of California.

London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 291 pp + [1] ("Afterthoughts") and publisher's ads, with illustrations from photographs and a large folding map of the White Pass & Yukon Route, with inset Map of Atlin Lake District laid in at the back. Original red cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Spinelightly sunned, a bit of scattered foxing, attractive engraved bookplate (identifying the owner simply as "Alexandra") on the front pastedown. Cameron traveled extensively and generally alone, publishing books on Africa, South America, Mexico, and the South Seas, among others. Although she has been described by some critics as more of a globetrotting tourist than an explorer (see Robinson p. 177 and the DNB) she was elected to membership in the Royal Geographical Society in 1913, suggesting her contemporaries, at least, felt otherwise. Carter's book attempts to inform people as to the great opportunities in Victoria, although he promises to show 'the dark as well as the bright surface.'" (Victoria Museum). Original printed wrappers. Clean, tightly bound, unmarked. From the Foreword: "It is true that the army never established an official fort at this site. However, the army did station a small number of troops here in 1867 and 1868 and they erected the stone building that looks more like a fort than any other ruin along the Mojave Road. Also, it is well known that various military and civilian parties were attracted to this point as a campsite and spent time here. Consequently, the Pah-Ute Cree site has become known as "Fort Pah-Ute" in an informal sense through many years of useage."

A landmark of Texas historiography, compiling important accounts by five of the primary Mexican architects of the revolution. Texas historian Stephen L. It incorporates the accounts of General Antonio López de Santa Anna (Commander of the Mexican Army of Operations in Texas), D. Ramón Martínez Caro (Santa Anna's private secretary), General Vicente Filisola (Santa Anna's second-in-command), General José Urrea (Santa Anna's undefeated divisional commander), and General José María Tornel (Mexican Secretary of War).
