Description:
Paris: Hippolyte Souverain,, 1840. A founding text of of utopian communism First edition of one of the great utopian works, issued in a limited number of copies for private circulation. The novel traces the journey of the fictional British Lord Clarisdall to the exotic island nation of Icaria, a communistic society in which the whole of social organisation is concentrated into the hands of a benevolent, rational, and all competent state, ensuring total equality. Étienne Cabet (1788-1856) was converted to communism in the 1830s when, during a period of exile in England enforced by his anti-government activities and publications, he was influenced by the Owenite movement and by his study of Plato, Thomas More, and the enlightenment philosophers, especially Rousseau. The book was published under a pseudonym as the author feared arrest. It went through many editions, and had a great impact in radical circles. "Voyage in Icaria recommends a classless and cashless world, in which all production and… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Central Asian Society,, 1938. First appearance in print of this account of travelling through Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) and across the Gobi Desert, by the first female individual winner of the Royal Central Asian Society's prestigious Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. Issues of the society's journal from the 1930s are now exceptionally scarce in commerce in any condition. In her account, given as a lecture to the society on 6 October 1937, Mildred Cable (1878-1952) discusses the course of what would prove to be her last expedition across Central Asia. She describes journeying to the region through the Soviet Union, travel by car along the new highways, and listening to a young boy denounce imperialism in a speech at the New Year festivities in Urumqi. She also points to the impact of changing social attitudes: "In past years we had often rubbed our eyes, to make sure that we were not dreaming an Arabian Night's dream, as we wandered about in the palaces of the Khans, sat with the… Read More

Description:
London: M. Ritchie & J. Sammells, apud T. Payne,, 1790. The Currer copy A splendid copy of Caesar's works, in the original Latin, elegant printed and handsomely bound. "This edition which is very beautifully printed, and of which there are some sumptuous copies on large paper, is deserving of a place in the student's library, from its extreme correctness" (Dibdin, Introduction, p. 364). This generously margined copy is likely from this large-paper issue. This copy originates from the celebrated library of one of England's first female book collectors, Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861), with her bookplate on the front free endpaper of each volume. Having inherited two sizeable estates, including her great-grandfather's extensive natural history library, Currer spent her life adding to and improving her collection, which she shelved across both the library and drawing room of her family home, Eshton Hall, Yorkshire. The collection included a number of early printed books, noted in particular… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, and R. Dodsley,, 1753. The grandest English Caesar First Duncan edition, one of the finest editions of Caesar's Commentaries, and perhaps the greatest edition published in the English language - large, elegantly printed, and magnificently illustrated. Duncan's translation was based on Samuel Clarke's Latin edition of 1712 and replicates the same plates. These illustrations led Clarke's edition to be commended by Joseph Addison as "one of the most beautiful books ever published in England" (Spectator, number 367). Most usually noted are the "Bull" and the spectacular "Battle with the Elephants" plates, but no less noteworthy are the battle plans, the nine double-page illustrations which comprise the view of Caesar's triumphal procession, or the typological series of the costume and customs of the enemies of Rome. Its engraved images of ancient British warriors, with elaborately painted bodies, and of Druidical priests and cultic practices like the… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1873. First edition of this collection of essays by the prominent Irish economist, "about half of which is taken up with Irish questions" (Palgrave, I, p. 201). Cairnes (1823-1875) occupied the chair of political economy at Dublin. "At the height of his career he was probably the best-known political economist in England after John Stuart Mill... between 1864 and 1870 Cairnes wrote a number of articles on the problems of land tenure in Ireland, in which he argued in favour of proposals to fix rent by law and contended that this was not inconsistent with classical rent theory. There is evidence that his views on this and other questions of the day, such as Irish university education, exerted considerable influence on (and through) Mill and Fawcett" (The New Palgrave). Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Description:
London: Macmillan and Co.,, [c.1874]. Early printing, from the library of the Irish economist Robert Dennis Collison Black (1922-2008), Professor of Economics at Queen's University Belfast from 1962 to 1985, with his ownership inscription dated 1944 to the front free endpaper verso. Black is best remembered for editing and publishing the Papers and Correspondence of William Stanley Jevons. He studies Cairnes in his book Economic Thought and the Irish Question, published 1960. The book does not have a date on the title page (the first printing has 1874), and despite the London imprint has the notice "Printed in New York, U.S.A" on the title page verso. It was therefore apparently printed from the London plates or stereos; it probably precedes the US edition published by Harper & Brothers also in 1874. Some Leading Principles was the author's last and longest work, a commentary on and critical interpretation of the principal doctrines of the English school of economists. Cairnes (1823-1875), often… Read More

Black is best-remembered for editing and publishing the Papers and Correspondence of William Stanley Jevons. Cairnes (1823-1875), often described as the "last of the classical economists", was a key Irish political figure who developed and critiqued the work of John Stewart Mill. This edition collects together various essays which Cairnes published in periodicals over the course of 14 years. Octavo. Original brown pebble-grain cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt and black, panelling to front cover in black and rear cover in blind, black endpapers. Description:
Burdeos: Imprenta de Lawalle Jóven y Sobrino,, 1819. Discovering the hypsometric principle First edition of the posthumously published work in which Caldas describes his principal scientific achievement, the discovery of a method for measuring altitude by the boiling point of pure water. Caldas (1768-1816), a self-taught scientist - and a lawyer and military engineer - from Popayán, New Granada, independently discovered the hypsometric principle and in 1801 constructed the first hypsometric thermometer. Later that same year he met Alexander von Humboldt, who had heard of Caldas and was impressed by the quality of his work given his extreme academic isolation. "Humboldt trained Caldas in many scientific methods and introduced him to new instruments; when the group travelled to Chile Humboldt began to teach him botany, which would continue to be his focus for many years" (NHM). Caldas went on to become director of the Astronomical Observatory of Santa Fe and to establish El Semanario, the first… Read More

Shanghai: The Commercial Press, Ltd,, 1916. The question of food and its preparation is the most vital First edition, first printing, of this rare cookbook with 1,000 recipes "adapted to the limitations of the local market, efforts having been made to exclude every recipe the ingredients of which can not be readily procured in China" (preface). Copies were sold in aid of the British Woman's Work Fund and other related charities. The 23 chapters offer directions on the preparation of everything from soups, macaroni, steak, and farinaceous foods to jellies, ice cream, cocktails, and candies, with the final section devoted specially to "invalid's food". This English-language volume was published simultaneously with a translation in Chinese (described as volume II), although whether they were sold as a two-volume set is unclear. Octavo. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1932. He still could not understand why he had nothing... It was the unsolved mystery of his life First edition, first printing, of this controversial American classic, the basis for the Broadway show which ran from 1933 to 1941 (then the longest-running play on record) and loosely adapted into the 1941 film version directed by John Ford. This title, Caldwell's third book, was included in the Modern Library's list of the Best 100 Novels in the English Language. Calder Willingham, another Southern novelist, stated: "A good case can be made that the inventor of Tobacco Road - far more than William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Robert Penn Warren, or any other Southern writer one can think of - is the true mythmaker of post-bellum Southern literature" (quoted in McDonald, p. 206). Description:
New York: The Viking Press,, 1933. A novel that will lift the noses of the sensitive First edition, first printing, uncommon in such excellent condition. The strong sexual themes of the novel caused a sensation upon release, provoking an obscenity trial involving Caldwell and the Viking Press. Despite this, or partly because of it, the book became "one of Caldwell's perennial best-sellers" (ANB). The story was adapted into a film of the same name in 1958. Caldwell's case was dismissed by the judge, who ruled in the book's favour arguing that Caldwell "had chosen to write what he believes to be the truth about a certain group in American life" and that "truth should always be accepted as a justification for literature" (Klevar, p. 136). The book was praised in the Saturday Review: "A novel that will lift the noses of the sensitive, Erskine Caldwell's 'God's Little Acre' is nevertheless a beautifully integrated story of the barren Southern farm and the shut Southern mill, and one of the finest studies… Read More
