Étienne Cabet (1788-1856) was converted to communism in the 1830s when, during a period of exile in England enforced by his anti-government activities and publications, he was influenced by the Owenite movement and by his study of Plato, Thomas More, and the enlightenment philosophers, especially Rousseau. First appearance in print of this account of travelling through Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) and across the Gobi Desert, by the first female individual winner of the Royal Central Asian Society's prestigious Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. Issues of the society's journal from the 1930s are now exceptionally scarce in commerce in any condition. In her account, given as a lecture to the society on 6 October 1937, Mildred Cable (1878-1952) discusses the course of what would prove to be her last expedition across Central Asia. She describes journeying to the region through the Soviet Union, travel by car along the new highways, and listening to a young boy denounce imperialism in a speech at the New Year festivities in Urumqi. "This edition which is very beautifully printed, and of which there are some sumptuous copies on large paper, is deserving of a place in the student's library, from its extreme correctness" (Dibdin, Introduction, p. 364). This generously margined copy is likely from this large-paper issue. This copy originates from the celebrated library of one of England's first female book collectors, Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861), with her bookplate on the front free endpaper of each volume. The grandest English Caesar First Duncan edition, one of the finest editions of Caesar's Commentaries, and perhaps the greatest edition published in the English language - large, elegantly printed, and magnificently illustrated. Duncan's translation was based on Samuel Clarke's Latin edition of 1712 and replicates the same plates. These illustrations led Clarke's edition to be commended by Joseph Addison as "one of the most beautiful books ever published in England" (Spectator, number 367). Most usually noted are the "Bull" and the spectacular "Battle with the Elephants" plates, but no less noteworthy are the battle plans, the nine double-page illustrations which comprise the view of Caesar's triumphal procession, or the typological series of the costume and customs of the enemies of Rome. John Caird was a grocer and confectioner based in Edinburgh, known for his internationally imported fruits and spices. Cairnes (1823-1875) occupied the chair of political economy at Dublin. "At the height of his career he was probably the best-known political economist in England after John Stuart Mill... between 1864 and 1870 Cairnes wrote a number of articles on the problems of land tenure in Ireland, in which he argued in favour of proposals to fix rent by law and contended that this was not inconsistent with classical rent theory. Black is best remembered for editing and publishing the Papers and Correspondence of William Stanley Jevons. He studies Cairnes in his book Economic Thought and the Irish Question, published 1960. The book does not have a date on the title page (the first printing has 1874), and despite the London imprint has the notice "Printed in New York, U.S.A" on the title page verso. It was therefore apparently printed from the London plates or stereos; it probably precedes the US edition published by Harper & Brothers also in 1874. Discovering the hypsometric principle First edition of the posthumously published work in which Caldas describes his principal scientific achievement, the discovery of a method for measuring altitude by the boiling point of pure water. Caldas (1768-1816), a self-taught scientist - and a lawyer and military engineer - from Popayán, New Granada, independently discovered the hypsometric principle and in 1801 constructed the first hypsometric thermometer. Later that same year he met Alexander von Humboldt, who had heard of Caldas and was impressed by the quality of his work given his extreme academic isolation. "Humboldt trained Caldas in many scientific methods and introduced him to new instruments; when the group travelled to Chile Humboldt began to teach him botany, which would continue to be his focus for many years" (NHM). The question of food and its preparation is the most vital First edition, first printing, of this rare cookbook with 1,000 recipes "adapted to the limitations of the local market, efforts having been made to exclude every recipe the ingredients of which can not be readily procured in China" (preface). Copies were sold in aid of the British Woman's Work Fund and other related charities. The 23 chapters offer directions on the preparation of everything from soups, macaroni, steak, and farinaceous foods to jellies, ice cream, cocktails, and candies, with the final section devoted specially to "invalid's food". New York: The Viking Press,, 1933. A novel that will lift the noses of the sensitive First edition, first printing, uncommon in such excellent condition. The strong sexual themes of the novel caused a sensation upon release, provoking an obscenity trial involving Caldwell and the Viking Press. Despite this, or partly because of it, the book became "one of Caldwell's perennial best-sellers" (ANB). The story was adapted into a film of the same name in 1958. Caldwell's case was dismissed by the judge, who ruled in the book's favour arguing that Caldwell "had chosen to write what he believes to be the truth about a certain group in American life" and that "truth should always be accepted as a justification for literature" (Klevar, p. 136).
