This useful handbook was republished in 1860 and went to a fifth edition by 1861.Covers the stripping down and parts of a rifle all illustrated in very clear wood-engraved diagrams. Also covers the principles of firing, aiming, distance estimation, etc. with a large folding plate to illustrate the latter.

It covers "the period from the formation of the last African Company of Merchants in 1750 to the conclusion of the third Ashantee War in 1874" during which British, Dutch and Danish interests bought and sold each other coastal forts without "any consultation whatsoever with the tribes concerned therewith" and garrisoned these forts with British army units (regular troops, the Royal African Corps and troops imported from the West Indies). The Royal African Corps (1800-1821), an infantry unit in the British Army, grew out of Fraser's Corps of Infantry which had been raised in 1800 for the defence of the Island of Goree off the Senegal coast. It was renamed the African Corps and then in 1804 the Royal African Corps. It was composed primarily of deserters and prisoners with some additional indigenous African soldiers being attached to make up numbers and it was used for colonial garrison duty, often of penal establishments.
