A survey of the propaganda and motivational posters designed and published by the General Cable Corporation during the Second World War. The posters are documented with 33 high quality full-page reproductions printed with spot colors (rather than four-color CMYK separations). On the page facing each poster is a brief bibliographical details about print runs, distribution, and the reason for the poster. This is one of the best books of WWII posters from the period. Many of the posters depicted had print runs in the hundreds of copies and are rarely seen. A World War One book that simultaneously recruits women to work in the British munitions industry and explains their presence to a public skeptical of the appropriateness of women working in factories. The author, a successful novelist, argues that women shouldn't be given just two choices when it comes to work-doing the drudgery that men don't want to do or being a "parasite" and not working at all. He then adds that factory work keeps women from pursuing their third option, prostitution: "Earning substantial wages, and being free to marry or not to marry, as they please had dealt a death-blow to [prostitution] which is based on the poverty of the woman and the wealth of the man." 127 pages plus 15 halftone photographs on 8 leaves. 1940. Ephemera. Fine. Three typed letters, signed, on Caldwell's full-sheet letterhead, addressed to "Cap" (Charles A. Pearce of Caldwell's publishers, Duell, Sloane and Pearce). The letters are five to seven lines and each is signed "Skinny", Caldwell's childhood nickname. The letters serve no business purpose, they are chatty, joke-y notes dashed off in a few minutes, and as such, they are more revealing than Caldwell's more formal, business letters. In the first letter, dated January 22, 1940, and stamped received the next day, Caldwell makes a cruel, sexist attempt at humor, writing in part, "I've just finished writing letters to every body in the office except you and the swell-looking cunt at the switchboard." Nice examples of the small-format stories published by Spanish children's book specialist Saturnino Calleja's "Recreo Infantil: Cuentos morales para niños" series. These child-size books, each 16 pages, measure (roughly) 2-7/8 by 4 inches, with a chromolithograph cover and one or more steel engravings inside. Calleja had a staff of writers who produced these short works anonymously, sometimes writing original stories and at other times adapting well-known tales. Among the writers Calleja employed was the future Nobel Prize winner, Juan Ramón Jiménez. Calleja's small, attractive, and inexpensive stories were produced in such volume that the saying "to tell more stories than Calleja" (tener más cuento que Calleja) became a standard refrain in Spain. It proved to be a popular text for livres d'artiste, and illustrated versions appeared in 1927, 1943, 1950 (this), and 1974. This example of the Carco-Dignimont edition is the copy reserved for the artist's wife, with "Exemplaire réservé à Madame Dignimont" printed on the colophon.
