Description:
Paris: Durand, 1862. First Edition. Very good. Together 13 vols. (from a total of 16). 8vo. Contemporary French quarter morocco over marbled boards, worn (see images), ownership stamps from various sources, various defects, the most egregious being some worming to the outside of the binding of the last volume (not affecting text or structural integrity). All the bindings are perfectly sound, and the texts are unspoiled. THIS IS THE LARGEST PUBLISHED COLLECTION OF SPANISH-AMERICAN AND PORTUGUESE-AMERICAN TREATISES, DATING FROM THE 16TH CENTURY TO THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY; AND OF THE LATIN AMERICAN REVOLUTION -- STILL INDESPENSIBLE; A MASSIVE WORK IN THE STUDY OF LATIN AMERICAN HISTORIOGRAPHY. Complete sets are virtually impossible to find in private ownership or on the market. Our set is substantially complete, containing 13 of the 16 volumes. According to Rare Book Hub, no complete set has ever appeared at auction (!) Among Latin American diplomats in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, a debate… Read More

Description:
Paris: Pierre Didot, l'aine, 1799. First Edition. 4to., 300 x 220 mm. 2 ff., 83 pp., COMPLETE with 9 folding engraved plates (one loose, another with short tear), and with the "Projet d'arrete du département de la Seine sur les sepultures" (pp. [73]-83) which is certainly not present in all copies. Original "temporary" drab boards; extremities worn, spine perished but boards quite intact (although quite foxed, text less so). Two sewing supports almost invisibly strengthened. Uncommon in commerce: ours appears to be the only copy on the market. VISIONARY FUNERARY LANDSCAPES AND MONUMENTS, a work now very little known; it preceded the establishment of Pere Lachaise (1804) which was the earliest of the spacious landscaped-style cemeteries. There are 9 folding engraved plates of which several recall the epic neo-classicism of Ledoux and Boullee, but more restrained: these designs were created for urban planners and politicians, not for the aggrandizement of the artist. Jacques Cambry (1749-1807) was… Read More

Description:
Madrid: Antonio de Sancha, 1774. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. (4 ff.), cxcviii pp. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, evidence of two pair of ties. Text very crisp & clean. True first edition of this crucial work on bringing parity to the tradesmen in Spain, with particular emphasis in reforming the Spanish economy. Conde de Campomanes "probably influenced Spanish economic thought of his time more than any other writer" (La Force p. 156). The present work is described as: "one of the fundamental books of the Spanish Enlightenment" (Venturi, Italy and the Enlightenment. Studies in a Cosmopolitan Century, p. 274). Campomanes advocates household industry - mainly textiles - rather than large-scale industry, so that people will not have to move from small towns and farms. In order to spread the knowledge that would make such industry possible, he strongly advocates the formation of local economic societies. Campomanes analyzes the natural resources, existing industry, and available… Read More

Madrid: Antonio de Sancha, 1775. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. [24], 475, [1] pp. Binding with minor rubbing (a few insignificant wormholes) but overall in excellent condition, the text very clean and crisp. Contemporary Spanish mottled sheep, smooth spine gilt, red morocco label, early paper shelf label at foot, marbled endpapers and edges. ¶ An extraordinary work on Spanish business development through education of artisans and craftsmen. The work deals with female labor, trades, apprenticeships, as well as provisions and funds for the disabled and old aged members of the working class. It also has a chapter about Spanish foreign trade, notably with the West Indies. ¶ Albert Boime gives an insightful overview of the Spanish government at the time: "Goya's print of the 'Crockery Vendor' celebrates the Spanish government's ideal of a prosperous and proud artisan class, enunciated in Campomanes's publications of 1774-1775, 'Discurso sobre el fomento de la industria popular and Discurso… Read More

Description:
S.l.: s.n., 1835. Very good. Collection of seven Chinese gouache paintings on pith paper (sizes vary: ca. 300 x 220 mm, some blank areas in fragile pith paper cracked or with loss, not affecting gouache paintings -- SEE IMAGES), a few retaining their original blue silk border edges. Each painting is hinged onto stiff lig-free board (377 x 277 mm) utilizing existing (old) cloth hinges and very lightly tipped onto backing board using reversable adhesive; light-green vertical cloth "window" mattes, in front of which are protective mylar sheets, the entire ensemble preserved in a protective cloth case. FASCINATING COLLECTION OF SEVEN CHINESE GOUACHE PAINTINGS ON PITH PAPER OF PERUVIAN AND ARGENTINEAN "COSTUMBRISMO." Examples such as ours are not often seen on the market and due to their fragility, and are absent from many relevant museums and research libraries worldwide. Among the rarest and least studied 19th-century Cantonese export watercolors are those depicting South American costumbrisimo (or… Read More

Charleston, South Carolina: Printed at the Office of the Charleston Courier, 1805. First Edition. Fair. 8vo. [3]-127, INCOMPLETE: lacking half-title, title-page (here in facsimile), and pp. 93-127 (paperstock browned throughout, p. [5] stained and a little soiled). Recent sympathetic wrappers, title written in ink on upper cover. Described in 1893 as "One of the rarest of American trials" (Catalogue of the Extraordinary Collection of Law Trials made by the late Edmund B. Wynn, no. 1275). Whereas our copy is significantly incomplete, we invite all haters to find another, but please be patient because no copy (complete or otherwise) has appeared at auction since 1963. McDade explains that this is "an unusual case at Goosecreek, South Carolina, in which the wife's lover murdered her husband outside the house and put the body in bed with the wife who attempted to conceal the crime. Description:
Paris: Librairie Ch. Chadenat, 1898. First Edition. Together 21 catalogues in two volumes, numbered 2-22 (no. 1 "does not exist" - see below), all original wrappers bound in (mostly folded vertically in half, some chipped or a little soiled). Contemporary blue half calf over blue cloth boards (extremities rubbed but the bindings are perfectly sound), inner margins of certain catalogues are very tight. In vol. 1, the verso of the final binder's leaf bears a contemporary inscription in pencil: "Dec. 29, 1898" (presumably when the catalogues were bound). SIGNIFICANT, UNBROKEN RUN OF ORIGINAL CHADENAT "BIBLIOPHILE AMERICAIN" CATALOGUES, rare in private ownership. It is with good reason that Chadenat's name is very frequently found alongside that of Sabin in superior catalogue descriptions of Americana and European Americana, despite the fact that Chadenat's catalogues almost never come up for sale. Our set is distinguished by the fact that it contains NINE catalogues that are not in the BnF. Indeed,… Read More

Description:
Belton and Dallas, TX: Hillyer Photographers, 1889. Good. Original photograph CDV (162 x 105 mm) on Hillyer stock (extremities worn, one small tear in photograph, for which see images). Interesting Texas photograph of a young woman; on the verso in an inscription (in extremely faint pencil) "Odna M. Chappell [?], age 15." It has been impossible for us to locate biographical information about this individual. Hillyer Studio was among the foremost cabinet card photographers in Texas during the late 19th-century. H.B. Hillyer (1835-1903) is credited with making some of the earliest photographs on paper in Texas. He moved from Austin to Dallas in 1887, branching out to Belton in 1889. "Hillyer's photographs won many awards at state fairs. For many years, as official photographer for the state of Texas" (SOURCE: TSA Handbook, online). Hillyer's CDV with both Belton and Dallas studios on the imprint are uncommon. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection of Women in the West.

Paris: Firmin-Didot, 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Large 8vo. ix, [3], 145 pp. Bound in contemporary French half calf over comb-marbled boards, comb-marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges (minor wear along extremities; lower left corner of front cover a little scraped). ¶ Presentation copy from the author to M. Anatole Gruger ("hommage cordial de l'auteur"). This is the catalogue of the Musee du Conservatoire National de Musique, which describes an extraordinary array of musical instruments, including Paganini instruments, and is at the same time a small encyclopedia, engaging and instructive. ¶ Gustave Chouquet (1819-1886) was born in The Hague into a life of music and music criticism. In 1864, the Academy of Fine Arts awarded him the Bordin Prize for a history of music from the fourteenth century until the end of the seventeenth. Chicago: M.A. Donahue & Company, 1914. Very good/Fair. 8vo. [2], 247 pp. Textblock weak and age-toned as is true of all copies on account of the cheap quality of the paper. Original publisher's green cloth, decoratively stamped in black and red (worn and somewhat soiled at head and tail, but generally in bright condition, the joints quite perfect), color-printed dust-jacket (worn and soiled, significant traces of damp on back cover and spine, inside with two tape repairs). With condition problems, and priced accordingly. This is probably the only surviving example of this particular dust-jacket. While the title-page is not dated, the dust-jacket is datable to 1914 because the publisher announces that Amy Brooks "Lady Linda's Gay Friends" is "now ready." While the illustrator of the dust-jacket is not named, it is sensitively rendered in thin line and pale colors. The driver of the car (a man) is obscured by the woman in the passenger seat. Her gaze is pensive and she does not smile, reflecting… Read More
