Description:
Brooklyn, NY: Strike Three Press, 2012. Klein, David G.. Quarto. (36)pp. One of 68 copies, signed by Cahill and Klein. Klein's expressive linocuts—printed in black, two with colored backgrounds—capture the personalities of various animals rescued and housed by Sean Casey Animal Rescue, a Brooklyn no-kill shelter thrumming with activity. Among the animals featured are a gentle pit bull, a three-legged feral cat, an enterprising parrot, and a seven-foot boa constrictor. The project is not merely sentimental; the book's Afterword details the enormous task of saving and rehoming pets lost and traumatized in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The result is a moving showcase of spirit, of the bond between humans and animals; the epigraph, drawn from Chief Seattle's 1855 letter to President Franklin Pierce, reminds us that "If all the beasts wre gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man. All things are connected." Bound in full dark gray… Read More

Description:
Madrid: Saturnino Calleja, 1924. (Bartolozzi, Salvador). Oblong 24mo. (16)pp. Printed in red and black, with red and black illustrations throughout and two full-page illustrations ornamented in a bright set of primary colors. The images evince the general Iberian style of the period: thin lines composed to show surreal scenes that straddle the cartoonish and the ghostly. Between 1915 and 1928, Editorial Calleja, which led the Spanish market in books printed for children in the early twentieth century, was under the artistic direction of Salvador Bartolozzi. Through his children's weekly edition Pinocchio, launched in 1925, Bartolozzi was one of the main impetuses behind the character's immense popularity from the 1920s onward. Bound in self-wrappers, decorated in color and with advertisements to recto and verso of rear cover. One-inch split to tail of spine, mild foxing and exterior soiling, else near fine. Only one copy recorded in OCLC.

Description:
London: Ken Campbell, 1990. Campbell, Ken. Large quarto. 39ff. One of forty copies. Printed by Campbell in polychrome letterpress and handwork. From the artist's website: ‘EXECUTION' plots the dismantling of a diagram (after Tschichold) that establishes a possible disposition of text on a page. The elements of the diagram are made from steel plate progressively cut, etched and ground to hasten their dismemberment and decay. The double-page spread is like two halves of a head, and there is a notion running through the book of a wolfman revealed. That's a Jungian notion, and a powerful one to my mind. It offers that there are two people looking out of any one face. Once again the book spread is used as an arena for corporeal display. The diagram is progressively destroyed through the book to reveal a cracked black mirror, which is the mirror in which one half looks at the other. Rectilinear wood blocks and heavy lead rules make up an abstract of the page described by the angular diagram. These too… Read More

Description:
Poestenkill: Editions Kaldewey, 1992. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio containing three oblong books of varying sizes. One of forty-five copies. The largest book presents the tale of Apollo and Daphne from Ovid's Metamorphoses, in Latin, illustrated with bold stripes, geometric shapes, and abstract swaths of color. The text's orientation on the page becomes increasingly dynamic as the story progresses toward the moment of transformation, which is expressed with a green explosion of ink and lines of text that radiate out from the center fold. The second largest book contains a retelling of the story in English from Daphne's point of view, written by the American writer Mary Caponegro. The narrow third book serves as a colophon, which explains the history of Ovid's stories and provides insight into Kaldewey's creative process and his collaboration with Caponegro. The two smaller books are intermittently printed with abstract shapes in pink, yellow, and green. All three books are bound in gray paper with a… Read More

Description:
(San Diego): Ash Ranch Press, 1988. Hildreth, Don. 27pp. One of twenty-six deluxe lettered copies with a beaded cover. According to Bradbury, Don Hildreth, the publisher behind the Ash Ranch Press, was "a talented practitioner of the book arts" who designed, handset type, illustrated, letterpress printed, and bound his books. All of the paper used is also handmade. The text is excerpted from the 1931 book "Old Mother Mexico," and is accompanied by a frontispiece with a three-color copper engraved halftone illustration of a Native American from an unknown book. Bound in full light brown suede, with the title and author stamped in green on the spine and along the edge of the front cover, and a beaded plaque with a geometric design in six colors on the front cover. Housed in a tan slipcase, gilt-titled to spine. Slipcase enclosed in likely original plastic sleeve which has the copy letter on a circular label on the spine. A very fine copy overall. (Bradbury p.12). (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 62x45mm).

Description:
London/NY: William Heineman/Doubleday Page, 1907. Rackham, Arthur. Quarto. xi, 162pp., + 12ff. plates. One of 1,100 copies. Because Rackham was away from London while this book was in production, most copies of the deluxe edition went unsigned; however, this copy has been signed by Rackham on the limitation page. Contains thirteen large tipped-in color plates and many black & white drawings, which offer Rackham's distinctive, new interpretation of scenes made famous in Tenniel's classic illustrations, such as Alice's encounter with the caterpillar, the Caucus Race, and the Mad Tea Party. Hudson describes Rackham's undertaking as "the most controversial of his career," but concludes that "he has certainly made the greatest impression of all Tenniel's multitude of successors." The book opens with a "proem" by Austin Dobson that cheekily addresses the challenge of illustrating such a classic work, saying, "here comes a fresh costumier" to interpret the story according to his own taste. In the… Read More

Description:
Baltimore: Xavier Press, 1993. Riley, Dominic. 19pp. A timeless essay by Lewis Carroll on the art of correspondence, illustrated with two pasted-in postage stamps promoting letter-writing and a fold-out sample of a letter by the author. In a designer binding by Dominic Riley featuring gilt-tooled envelopes and abstracted stamps in onlays of yellow, green, and plum on black morocco. These panels were inlaid into overlapping strips of dark brown goatskin, and the title is tooled in gilt down the spine. The design is segmented into panels that are slightly offset from each other, introducing tension and movement into the design. Between the panels are columns of gilt dots, and the dots are repeated inside the covers on bright green morocco doublures. Violet suede flyleaves and jewel-toned endpapers complete the production. The edges are painted with blue, green, yellow, and violet acrylic. Housed in a black cloth clamshell box lined with vibrant turquoise suede. Riley studied with Paul Delrue and at the… Read More

Poughkeepsie, NY: Artists and Writers Guild, 1935. Wolff, Kate. Square octavo. (14)ff., + opaque tissue sheets. A clever, interactive book calling on children to use scissors or a penknife to cut out the negative space in a printed image, and to fill in the then-missing background with colored paper so that, when backlit, the images light up. The provided illustrations offer a variety of scenes: fantastical castles, witches, and gnomes, pastoral landscapes, urban alleyways, a churning locomotive, a Christmas tree, and a stereotypical Native American warrior. The opening instructions encourage creativity with paper, advocating for the use of multiple colors and for various layering techniques.
