Description:
Engraved title & several engravings & numerous woodcuts in the text. 8 p.l., 412, [12] pp. Folio, cont. half-sheep & marbled boards (minor worming towards end), spine gilt, black leather lettering piece on spine. Ferrara: F. Succius, 1629. First edition, Jesuit issue, and a very fine copy. "Perhaps the most significant discovery of the century following Gilbert was that of electrical repulsion. This effect seems first to have been noticed incidentally by Cabeus, who, in his Philosophia Magnetica (1629), describes how filings attracted by excited amber sometimes recoiled to a distance of several inches after making contact."-Wolf, A History of Science, Technology, and Philosophy, I, p. 303. Cabeo also relates his many experiments on the possibility of telegraphic communication by means of magnetized needles and gives the first picture of the sympathetic telegraph, an imaginary magnetic telegraph which sometimes appeared in early electrical literature, fancifully… Read More

Description:
74 folding leaves. Small 8vo., orig. wrappers (a little defective), orig. stitching. [China]: Siyin zhai 四印齋, [1893-96]. A collection of lyrics, a style of poetry with origins in folk music. As a genre, lyrics are associated especially with the Song period. Cai Songnian (1107-59) was born in north China under Khitan Liao rule but lived through the Jurchen defeat of the Liao and the invasion of Song-controlled North China in 1127. He served the Jurchen as a high official, writing poetry in the genre of the lyrics which were also popular south of the border. The book has a colophon by Zhang Rongjing 張蓉鏡 dated 1824 (Daoguang jiashen). Zhang explains that even though "the Jin held power for 110 years," very few books survive, especially collections of lyrics. Our book has a detailed running commentary by Wei Daoming 魏道明. The base edition of the text is said to be an incomplete copy (canben 殘本). Our book was published by Wang Pengyun 王鵬運 (1840-1904). Wang's studio name… Read More

The very rare privately printed catalogue - issued in a few copies only - of one of the most important collections of manuscripts formed in 18th-century provincial France. Joseph Louis Dominique Cambis-Velleron (1706-72), was one of the great provincial collectors of the period. A member of a very old and distinguished family from Avignon, Cambis-Velleron served in the army for some years. 105, [6] pp. Small 4to (200 x 146 mm.), orig. printed pictorial softcover (minor wear to spine), title on spine. [Mexico]: Ediciones Era, 1966. First and only edition of Carrión's first published book. In 1966, Carrión (1941-89) was one of Mexico's emerging literary talents. A number of his short stories had been published in leading journals, and his first play, El Gran Espectáculo, was performed at the Casa de la Cultura de Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, to rave reviews. Following his studies in philosophy and letters at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, he spent time in France and Germany (1964-65) learning both languages. La muerte de Miss O, consisting of six short stories - La muerte de Miss O, Y el olvido..., Las palabras, Graciela y yo, El asalto, and Como la serpiente - was lauded in an effusive review published in El Colegio de México's Diálogos: Artes, Letras, Ciencias humanas. Description:
Many color illus. 135 pp. Oblong 4to (212 x 300 mm.), pictorial semi-stiff wrappers. Buenos Aires: 2013. First and only edition of the rare Carrión catalogue raisonné. This is an essential book for understanding Carrión's life and work, not just for its recording of all of his known bookworks (unique and editioned), but also for the insightful essay by Heriberto Yepez, entitled "The Four Periods of Ulises Carrion," published here for the first time and not reprinted since. The catalogue records each of the artist's books with several pictures, beginning with La Muerte de Miss O. (1966), then the final bookwork published during his lifetime, For Fans and Scholars Alike (1987), and finally posthumous publications and re-publications of his earliest bookworks. The majority of Carrión's earlier books were made in small editions, and today are extremely scarce. Most interestingly, this book has a section for the artist's "One-of-a-Kind Bookworks"; these are largely unknown and are now held at the… Read More
