Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longmans. London. 1841 - 2. FIRST EDITION. 3 vols. Illustrated throughout each volume with frontis and vignette wood engravings by the Author. Sadleir writes in his bibliography of 19th Century fiction that Taffrail, the writer of sea stories, informed him that Marryat himself drew the illustrations for this book, or at least supplied the sketches from which the drawings were finally prepared. A very good copy in the publishers original bindings of dark grey cloth with blindstamped illustration, possibly Captain Osborne, to each board, surrounded by a double ruled border. Spines with blind ruling and gilt lettering. This set has the later issue of volume one with the lettering stating Vol 1. on the first volume. Inscribed by Steadman on the dedication page in the year of publication, with characteristic flourishes; "Eleanor. Its only paper. Ralph (Steadman that is). 10. 12. 75". Mono illustrations throughout by Steadman. Original black stiff card binding with a mono illustration to the front panel and purple and white lettering. A little bumping to the corners but overall a very good copy.

MacGibbon & Kee, London. 1972. FIRST RALPH STEADMAN EDITION. 4to. (12.5 x 8.9 inches). Mono illustrations throughout by Steadman. Original black cloth binding with silver lettering to the spine. A little bumping to the top and bottom of the spine but still a near fine copy in the original illustrated dustwrapper which is price clipped to the bottom of the front inner flap but is otherwise very good indeed.

Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

Stanfield.Finely bound in nineteenth century half green calf. Spine with raised bands. Compartments with rules and jagged lines and floral centre pieces, all in gilt. Red title label, gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Plain brown endpapers with a small book label of Mills Bookshop of London to the rear paste down endpaper. Some minor rubbing to binding and edges a bit bumped but overall a very good copy.

Illustrated with 16 full page colour plates, 6 full colour and 10 printed in orange, black and grey, plus several hundred fine line drawings, many within the text and a few printed in red and black. A very good copy in publishers paper covered boards with colour illustration mounted to front cover within a printed border, below black lettering. Grey cloth spine with lettering and decoration in black. Some rubbing to the corners and a little fraying to the cloth but overall a very good copy of this beautifully illustrated book.

Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine a little darkened to edges but overall a lovely copy in a fine and very attractive early twentieth century leather binding. This volume contains the literary works, as well as the letters of Lamb.

Blind single ruled border on boards. Endpapers featuring printed adverts. Minor bumping to the corners but overall a very near fine set . The cloth is bright and clean and the gilt fresh and gleaming on all five books. A beautiful set in superior condition and scarce thus.

Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A hint of rubbing to the edges and a few light spots to the front board but still overall a near fine, attractive copy.

Overall a near fine copy. --- A scarce and unusual book of Satyrical political verses with all the characters being pigs and set in Ham(p)shire. Copac lists just five physical copies of this first edition.
