Half Morocco. Good. N.d., circa 1910. Oblong, 27.5 by 36.5 cm. 56 pp., 447 photographs. Depicts rural life, farming of era, camping, sports -- equine, and deer hunting -- poor homesteads and black people. In North Carolina there is a mountainous backdrop, while in Florida the setting is often swampy. Condition -- spine perished. A shake to the text block. Edges rubbed and worn. Card leaves age toned. The photos themselves are well-preserved.

Beautifully bound in full straight-grained red morocco by Morrell of London with gilt decoration, raised bands, turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Small 4to, 26 by 17 cm. vii, [9], 184 pp. 26 hand-colored plates. Clever humor verse and illustrations exploring various uses of the work "taking", such as taking bets, taking aim, taking advice, taking hints, taking notice, taking thought, taking courage -- a highly original treatment of a versatile, elastic word that surely is consequently elusive to the non-native speaker. Somehow not listed in Tooley. The artist, Richard Dagley, exhibited at the Royal Academy a number of times between 1785 and 1833. Condition: light wear to binding -- corners slightly rubbed. Light and very occasional foxing and other trivial soiling. Essentially clean and tight, and easily Near Fine.

No copies found on OCLC, nor is this in the BNF catalogue. N.d., circa 1880. Folio, 39 by 28 cm. Title, blank, 2 pp. -- table of contents, 26 color plates, each with a separate leaf of description. (Descriptions can be one or two pages -- if one page, the verso is blank.) Furnishings shown are overwhelmingly of the type one would have found in the homes of the upper middle class. Some of the specimens might well have also furnished more august residences; in our view, this is a reflection of a congruence of taste and accessibility across class lines. 1986. Limited First Edition. With Box. Like New. No. 49 of 50 copies of this artist's book inspired by the movie star Gloria Stuart (1910 -2010). Ms. Stuart was a leading lady in the 1930s and early 1940s, best known then for her roles in "The Invisible Man", and many decades later, after a long retirement from the movies, for her role in "Titanic" in 1997. Ms. Stuart, though, was far from idle during her many years away from acting, and her multifarious productivity away from the camera are every bit as fascinating as her Hollywood career. Besides being a political activist sympathetic to liberal causes throughout her life, Ms. Stuart was active in the decorative arts as a designer and business owner, and she enjoyed considerable success as a primitivist painter as well. One of 50 copies of this artist's book. 13 pp. No copyright claimed, with it expressly stated that the story was lifted from the Internet! The delightful short short story revolves around the upbringing of Mr. and Mrs. Potatos daughter, Yam, and the punchline turns on a pun! An inimitable miniature book, in pristine condition.

Binding by Stikeman & Co. for Charles Scribners Sons. Mild age toning to the leaves. Light rubbing and wear to the half morocco binding.

With signed inscription by d'Annunzio, to unknown recipient: "Questo poema e offerto in segno della mia riconoscenza pel suo alto fervore. Gabriele d'Annunzio. Roma: Aprile 1905." 8vo. 18.5 by 12 cm. 151, [1] pp. Top quarter of prelim leaf with inscription is neatly cut-out, probably to remove the identity of the recipient of the inscription. The pages are age toned, as per normal for the paper stock used. Some soiling of the vellum cover, which nonetheless remains handsome.

Vicenza: Tipografia Paroni, 1857. First Edition Thus Presumed. Full Vellum. Very Good. 8vo. 20.5 by 14 cm. Scarce, and refreshing version of the Commedia, with the verse on the verso side and facing, on the recto, an Italian paraphrase. This would seem a great idea to facilitate the reading enjoyment of the work by stripping away the copious footnotes that generally accompany the Commedia, whatever language used. Surely lost in this version to the modern reader, and this would apply almost equally to the nineteenth century Italian reader as well, is some of the biographical and historical esoterica, but gained is an ability to relish the verse, with a quick bumping up of one's literal comprehension without getting bogged down in minutiae. The full vellum of the three volumes is attractive but soiled, particularly on the spines, and with one blemish burn-like spot, smaller than dime-sized, on the Inferno volume. Berlin: Askanischer Verlag, 1921. First Edition. One Quarter Calf. Very Good. 574 pp., profusely illustrated with text illustrations from many sources, generally well-known artistic renderings of the Divine Comedy. Some illustrations are tipped-in plates. Text block and binding are tight, and pages are clean. Some rubbing to raised bands, of which there are six, on the calf spine. Still attractive spine. Boards have interesting floral abstract design on crinkly paper pasted onto boards, and this in fine condition. Minimal shelfwear other than rubbing of spine. Some soilage to foreedges, not affecting pages proper. Overall, at least a very good copy of a very attractive German version of the classic.

London: Robert Laurie and James Whittle, 1800. Half Calf. Very Good. Large folio, measuring 22 by 15.5 inches, or 56 by 40 cm, with the 13 maps contained herein all double paged. The maps are copper engraved and hand-colored in outline, most with typical Baroque style, often figurative, cartouches in the corners with the title of the particular map contained therein. The maps are watermarked 1794. They are also printed on a paper with a high rag content and thus well-preserved, with a bit of light toning and only trivial soiling otherwise. A few leaves have a long, narrow light dampstain along a margin, which few would find bothersome. There are a few minor chips and/or tears besides, again not intrusive of the maps proper. Rebacked with modern calf. Otherwise the marbled boards and the corner calf triangles are contemporary. The latter have wear, as do the edges.

A total of 1,000 copies were printed if all the limitation tranches are combined. 8vo. 19 by 13 cm. 302, [1] pp., full of pochoir colored illustrations, then followed by two suites of plates of all the illustrations in the text, one rendered in black and white, the other, colored, as the illustrations are also rendered in the text. With the original wraps bound into a custom full blue morocco binding done by G. Levitzky. The binding has raised bands and three pictorial vignette onlays on the binding, one of a windmill, one of a wheat stalk stem, and the last, of the wheat sprout.
