Engraved double page map, 25" x 20 1/2", map dated, hand colored in outline. Wide margins, chip out of upper margin, slight foxing and aging; otherwise very good or better. d' Anville (1697-1782) was a highly respected French cartographer that many believed raised the standard of map making. He even became geographer to the king in 1775. His maps were typically very detailed and accurate, and the French government upon his death acquired much of his cartographic material. This is a map of Asia Minor, which covers the territory from Greece to Armenia, and as far south as Lebanon. Van De Gohm p. 104. britannica online website.

Christopher Gist (1705-1759) was an explorer, surveyor, and Indian agent that played an important role in opening up southern Ohio. He also served in the military during the French and Indian War, and was part of George Washington's expedition to get the French out of the Ohio region. He appears to have had some success negotiating with the Indians, and even persuading some to help the English against the French. Gist is perhaps best known for the surveying he did of the Ohio region, including the Ohio River area around Pittsburg to Louisville, Kentucky. Gist actually gave the English the first detailed account of southern Ohio and northeastern Kentucky, which was more… Read More

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, original wrappers, illustrated, 32 pp. Disbound, wrappers detached with significant chipping, some pieces gone, paper browned and aged, and rather fragile; complete. This is an interesting political pamphlet that presents a good deal of information on the election frauds of the 1868 election in New York City. The pamphlet mentions some of the central figures involved, including William 'Boss' Tweed, Joseph Farrell, and William Varley, alias "Reddy the Blacksmith". Some information concerning the criminal records of these individuals is also included. The act of "repeating," voting a number of times in various election wards is discussed in detail, as it relates to the elections of 1868. Not the best copy, but complete, and appears to be somewhat scarce, as the OCLC locates just a few copies. OCLC.

4to, modern half green levant morocco & cloth, spine lettered in gilt, Illustrated with 2 folding maps; frontispiece portrait from a photograph of the author, 235 pp. Maps with neatly repaired stub tears just intruding into images, slight aging; else fine in attractive modern binding. George Davidson (1825- 1911) was a surveyor, geodesist, and astronomer and was born in Nottingham, England. His family emigrated to Philadelphia when he was seven. In 1843 Davidson joined the U.S. Coast Survey. "He then spent several years in the South, learning field surveying on the job. In 1850, soon after the United States took over California from Mexico, Davidson was put in charge of the survey on the West Coast. Charts were badly needed, and he mapped harbors, headlands, and points all along the coast, from San Diego north to the Columbia River. The field work involved many hardships, which included frequent landings in small boats through the surf." This is a presentation copy inscribed and signed by Davidson on… Read More

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, stitched, self wrappers, 15 [1] pp. Two horizontal creases from being folded, stitching a little loose; otherwise very good or better. Davis (1831-1916) was elected to Congress in 1876. His most significant contribution during his two terms in office related to the "Chinese Question". In 1878, he introduced a bill to restrict immigration from China. This pamphlet presents the speech he made in the House to support that bill. In his speech he rails against the Chinese whom he felt were a curse. He goes as far to say that when the first Chinese immigrant came to this country, he was viewed as a novelty, and that people really didn't have the intelligence to understand the significance of his coming. He characterized the Chinese as some kind of alien substance that would infect the body until it was eliminated. Cowan p. 158. DAB Vol. III

Susan Davis was a daughter of one of the founders of the Ku Klux Klan, and had special insight into the workings of this infamous organization. Not surpriingly she presents a piture of a group that is misunderstood, and often mistrepresented. Perhaps the real value of this work, is that she had access to the 'founding fathers' of the Klan, and interviewed many other Klan members and got first hand accounts of thier activities.

Engraved double page map, 28" x 20", wide margins, hand colored in outline, two uncolored pictorial cartouches. Expert and nearly invisible repairs along centerfold, normal aging; about near fine. Impression is bright and clean. Nicholas De Fer (1646-1720) was a highly respected and prolific French cartographer whose maps were valued for their decorative appeal. Around 1690 he was made the geographer to the Dauphin, and published his first atlas. He would become geographer to other high-ranking individuals in French and Spanish society. The present map is detailed and attractive map of Asia, with a cartouche showing Chinese at the upper left, and Indians in the upper right. The map covers a lot of territory showing Arabia and the Persian Empire in the West, and Japan in the east, but goes as far south as the Isle of Borneo and Java. Part of Eastern Europe is also visible. Library missouri website.

Description:
8vo modern cloth, xxvi, 509 pp. illustrated with plates and folding frontispiece map. Some minor edge wear to binding, some foxing and folding map chipped a little at edges and not folded evenly. Nice tight copy. De Forest (1826-1906) wrote this book under the patronage of the Connecticut Historical Society. He was an author who wrote a couple of novels as well as historical works, and also provided war coverage for Harper’s Weekly. This work is a very comprehensive coverage of the subject that includes everything from a physical description of the Indians and their environment to some of the reasons for their decline. He seems impressed with the appearance of Indian men who he describes as being tall, trim, fit and tawny in color. He is less flattering to Indian women who he felt were “short and clumsy” and unfeminine. Devotes two chapters to the problems with the Pequots, and in his discussion of the decline of the Indians blames some of it on the use of liquor.

Still a very respectable copy. Germaine (Madame) de Stael (1766-1817) was born in Paris, but was actually part of the Swedish nobility, and was a well-known writer and literary critic during her time. She published a number of "best selling" novels during the French revolutionary period, and her literary criticism had considerable influence. Her well-known conflict with Napoleon seems to have helped secure her position among intellectuals of her time, and bolstered her own ego in the process. Her work on suicide first appeared in 1813, and begins with a short letter to the Prince of Sweden where she points out the work was written during a difficult time in her life. She seems to argue that while many consider suicide because of the… Read More

Description:
Double page engraved map (28" x 20"), hand colored in outline, uncolored pictorial and title cartouche. Some meaningful foxing, especially in margins, wide margins, some wear at top and bottom of centerfold, mild creasing, lower left corner missing, but well away from map; strong impression. Robert De Vaugondy (1688-1766) was one of the leading cartographers in 18th century France. This map illustrates the African continent around 1756. Reflecting the available knowledge at the time, the map doesn't show as much detail in some portions of the interior, and tribal names are used in some areas. However, according to Norwich, the lakes and rivers appear quite accurate. The cartouche on this map illustrates a native woman reclining between two palm trees with a lion at her feet. Norwich 94.
