Description:
661-683 pages with diagrams, maps, tables and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 23, Number 4 complete issue. First edition. Stone artefacts are usually privileged witnesses, and often the sole preserved witnesses, of prehistoric man and his activities. The study of artefacts is ordinarily restricted to typology, i.e., description, classification, and comparison of these artefacts clustered into assemblages with a view to defining industries and, hence, prehistoric cultures. This approach is somewhat limited, as it registers differences or resemblances between the assemblages provided by the excavations without being able to explain them. It has been argued that an assemblage of stone tools represents the activities which have taken place on a particular site and that typological differences reflect different activities. The validity of the assumptions on which this "functional argument" relies has, however, never been verified.… Read More

Description:
294-314 pages with maps and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 30, Number 4 complete issue. First edition. As a result of its goals and previous experience, a colonizing society adopts a more or less consistent and successful strategy for exploitation of natural and human resources in newly occupied territory. This paper proposes a framework for describing the strategic bases for specific patterns of resource exploitation. The Spanish colonization of Cuba is examined with attention to the ways in which previous experiences on Española affected the Spanish strategy for exploitation of Cuba's natural resources and human population. In contrast to Española, Spanish colonization of Cuba followed a pattern aimed at maximizing efficiency in resource exploitation. The primary vehicle of the new strategy was the location of Spanish settlements. An approach which views colonial expansion from the perspective of ecosystem… Read More

362 pages. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's quarter orange cloth with black lettering to spine over black boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Haiti and New York may seem worlds apart, but in this tense and engrossing novel they're literally right next door to each other. When Brooklyn jeweler Moe Rosen plays the good Samaritan and saves his next-door neighbor, restaurant-owner Miz Ark, from a mugger, his impulsive act opens a door into a whole different world. The Haitian community that revolves around Miz Ark's restaurant embraces Moe as a wanga, a good-luck charm, and Moe's luck starts to change personally and professionally. Meanwhile, young Fabrice Lacroix flees Haiti on a raft when the family he works for is murdered by the evil Col. Hugo Ferray. The two plot lines begin their slow, tense advance toward each other as Fabrice makes his way from Haiti to New York, and Ferray is squeezed out of Haiti by the CIA. That both men are heading for Miz Ark should… Read More

44-64 pages with tables and cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 67, number 1 complete issue. First edition.Primitive money is a complicated subject for several reasons. There is not in common use a set of analytical categories designed to reveal distinguishing characteristics of markedly different systems: economies without markets and machines still tend to be viewed through the theoretical spectacles designed for Western economy. Second, francs, sterling, and dollars are only the most recent of a long series of foreign monies introduced into primitive economies. Earlier, Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and others introduced cowrie, manillas, beads, etc., with varying permeation and varying disruption of indigenous monetary systems. Only rarely do anthropologists succeed in disentangling the foreign from the indigenous in a way which reveals the nature of the old money and the consequences of the new.Condition: Spine sunned, corners… Read More

The study of social organization has moved from a peripheral to a central position in the burgeoning literature of the Eskimo. Presentations of Eskimo kinship systems have had an important impact on attempts at classifying kinship terminologies and kinship has become a major preoccupation of field workers in the Central Eskimo regions in recent years. Less well explored but still significantly represented in the recent literature are such topics as family and local organization, authority structure, alliance mechanisms, and cultural ecological explorations of features of society. The topic of Huron marriage and kinship is a hornet's nest for the anthropologist. Since the first reports registered by the Recollet and Jesuit missionaries, authors have cited four different types of filiation-descent groups1 and no less than ten different forms of post-marital residence.2 In 1624 Pere LeCaron wrote: "most Huron have several wives and change whenever it pleases them." The Jesuit Brebeuf (1957:25) reported that eleven years later in 1635 one of the major advantages in proselytizing the faith among the Huron was that they were already monogamous with a strong incest taboo: "they marry into neither their direct nor collateral lines." The exogamy prohibition has been variously applied to the ohwachia (matrilocal extended family) (Tooker 1964), the matrisib or clan (Richards 1957), or the entire tribe (Smith 1970). It… Read More
