Description:
Paris: Rigaud,, 1716. The first female translator of Homer First Dacier edition, in a beautiful contemporary French binding decorated with small gilt shell tools. Dacier's celebrated translation into French of the Odyssey is considered her "crowning achievement" (Folger, p. 34) alongside her equally successful translation of the Iliad (1711). The only daughter of the noted Hellenist Tanneguy Lefèvre, Anne Dacier (c.1654-1720) began translating classical works from an early age, beginning with Callimachus and progressing to versions of the poems of Anacreon and Sappho. She was a staunch champion of Homer in the Ancients and Moderns debate, in which she defended his works against what she saw as the contemporary decline in standards of taste. Despite literary feuds with Antoine Houdar de la Motte and Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacinthe, and her differences in particular with Alexander Pope, with whom she fundamentally disagreed on how best to approach translating Homer, Dacier was held in high regard by her… Read More

Description:
Paris: Denys Thierry,, 1681. When I look at you even for a short time, it is no longer possible for me to speak First edition of the first translation of Sappho by a woman, paired with her version of Anacreon, in a contemporary binding and complete with the often-lacking frontispiece. Prior to Dacier, Louise Labé in France and Gaspara Stampa in Italy published poetic imitations of Sappho, but Dacier was the first woman to translate the poems themselves into any modern language. The only daughter of the noted Hellenist Tanneguy Lefèvre, Anne Dacier (c.1654-1720) translated classical works from an early age, beginning with Callimachus and progressing to Anacreon and Sappho. "By choosing to translate Anacreon and Sappho into French, instead of presenting them with a Latin translation, as her father did, Anne Le Fèvre was seeking to introduce these two authors to a larger audience. That is indeed what she says in her preface to Anacreon, specifying that she is particularly thinking about women: 'By… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1985. Signed by Dahl and Blake First edition, first impression, signed by both the author and illustrator on the front free endpaper. Dahl and Blake achieved considerable success with The Enormous Crocodile in 1978 and this, another picture book for young children, was a worthy successor. Dahl dedicated the work to his three stepdaughters. When Dahl delivered the typescript to his English publisher, Tom Maschler responded with a note stating "Vintage Dahl. And with new aspects as well. What more could one ask?" A review in the Times Literary Supplement noted "there are better things than this in children's literature but this will fill that space where the ego and the libido run riot, where the only relationship is the camaraderie between fellow gluttons". Quarto. Original illustrated boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, dark blue endpapers. No dust jacket issued. Illustrations throughout by Quentin Blake. Spine and extremities a little faded, sides bright, short… Read More

Description:
London: George Allen and Unwin,, 1968. First UK edition, first impression. The story was first published in the US in 1966. Dahl originally began work on The Magic Finger in 1962, under the original title of The Almost Ducks. In the story, an eight-year-old girl, who hates to see animals killed for fun, develops a special power, similar to that of Matilda. The book was part of a project in which a group of writers was asked to create a story for children using a limited vocabulary. Dahl, who was very much opposed to animal cruelty, wrote this anti-hunting story against "all the brave deer hunters and duck hunters in the country". However, Macmillan, who had originally commissioned the story, refused it. Then Knopf, Dahl's regular US publishers, also turned it down. Both, it has been suggested, were wary of repercussions from the US gun lobby. Harper & Row was a new publishing firm for Dahl and they responded with an attractively produced book. The UK edition uses the same setting of text as the US… Read More

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1980. A playfully inscribed copy First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "To Jonathan with love Roald Dahl, Dec. 1980". The inscription is written on the rear free endpaper upside-down, in keeping with the topsy-turvy rear panel of the dust jacket. The jacket blurb commences, "Mr and Mrs Twit are dreadful". Dahl wrote this tale as a deliberate reaction to the typical saccharine story for children he thought flooded the market. In a letter to Dahl about The Twits, his editor agreed: "I like it VERY MUCH... You're right: what we want (or should want) for these little ones is stuff with meat, not the yuchy [sic] sweetly pretty material we're exposed to" (Sturrock, p. 504). Octavo.
