Description:
Selinsgrove: Susquehanna University Press, 1988. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/Fair. First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, 269pp. Signed and dedicated by Fred Crawford to historian and author Anne Powell to the half title, and also with two typed letters signed and a Christmas card from Fred Crawford to Anne Powell. Crawford offers a wide-ranging survey of British poets of the First World War, including minor, largely forgotten writers whose conventional responses are more culturally than aesthetically interesting. The major innovators (Edmund Blunden, Edward Thomas, Wilfred Owen, and Isaac Rosenberg) get attention too, as do others who saw the war in fresh ways. Crawford is fond of classifying poets; Sassoon, for example, appears in a chapter on satire and protest. There is also a chapter on women poets. Though it breaks little new critical ground, the book is a useful introduction, especially since it quotes more than 2000 lines of poetry, much… Read More

Description:
Brighton: Royal Pavilion & Museums, 2009. First Edition. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 27 × 21.5cm, 143pp. China has fascinated the imagination of the West for centuries. The story of chinoiserie in Britain is a dazzling example of contact between two very different cultures. This indispensable and beautifully illustrated guide to the chinoiserie style tells three centuries of stories through rare and exotic objects. Loans from HM The Queen, national museums and private collections include some of the earliest Chinese and China Trade objects exported to Britain. English merchants returned from China with silk, porcelain, tea and lacquer. These fabulous objects inspired local craftsmen to produce their own fantastical pieces using the fanciful imagery of an imaginary China. The Royal Pavilion in Brighton is the most dazzling example of chinoiserie style and extravagance in Britain, and is the inspiration and focus for the major exhibition that this book accompanies.… Read More

Description:
London: NLB, 1980. Reprint. . Hardcover. Good/Good. Reprint. Hardback in dustwrapper. 21.5 × 14cm, 268pp. Logic as a Positive Science represents the fruit of more than two decades of the philosophical work of Galvano Della Volpe. The central concern of Logic as a Positive Science is to establish a scientific logic free of any aprioristic speculation. Delia Volpe argues that there can be no specifically philosophical logic, or method of producing true knowledge. On the contrary, there is only one logic and one method: that of modern, experimental science. The establishment of this proposition is, according to the dictates of his method itself, part and parcel of a description of what that logic is, and how it is distinct from and superior to any other. Della Volpe maintains that the liberation of philosophy from idealist speculation is itself a historical process, and critical consideration of that process is integral to the constitution of a genuinely scientific logic and methodology.… Read More

Description:
London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1975. First Edition. . Paperback. Good. First paperback edition. 21.5 × 14cm, 213pp. "In this book Tim Dinsdale tells of a Quest, the true life adventure story of a search for something which appears to be impossible - the Loch Ness and Loch Morar Monsters. It is a book about people, and experiments, and extraordinary events, and for the first time Dinsdale examines the more intriguing human aspects of the chase. He shows what immense effort and ingenuity have gone into hunting 'Nessie' over the years, in terms of modern technology, and tells of the romantic, sometimes comically eccentric, expeditions put in by enthusiast; the 'Monster-hunters' as they have come to be known. He looks in a kindly way upon their failures, and applauds their successes." Condition: Very good condition, with a light crease to the spine and a little tanning to the pages.
