Dale, the author, was an influential preservationist, who founded the "Regency Society" in Brighton to preserve the area's historical buildings and character from destruction and development. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dale in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper: "Pretending that I gave you this copy, but though I didn't, nevertheless with no less good wishes. Antony Dale." There is also a laid-in handwritten letter from one John Gwinnett of Chichester House in Ditchling, Sussex, addressed to "Denman" (this is quite possibly Thomas Denman, who was the fifth Governor-General of Australia; he lived nearby in Hove, Sussex at the time of writing). A very nice copy in contemporary full calf. Rebacked to style, with gilt devices and red morocco spine label. Some scuffs to boards. Contents sound, clean, and bright, with no foxing. Overall a very good or better copy of this comprehensive, handsome book on English heraldry. Armorial bookplate (appropriately enough) of John Thomas Simes on the front paste-down.

Cleveland: [no publisher identified], 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Oblong quarto, unpaginated (2 leaves, plus eight unnumbered plates). A good copy only in the publisher's blue-green boards with white vellum spine and onlaid illustrated title label to front board. Wear to spine vellum, rear inner hinge cracked and exposed, and foxing/soiling to endpapers, but the plates clean and attractive. In the publisher's slipcase, soiled and with some wear to the opening, but sound. The eight plates are color-tinted photogravures, each of which brings to life the carefully nurtured gardens of this Bratenahl estate on the shore of Lake Erie. Some spotting and a few stray marks to the cloth, inner hinges starting, but holding, and some internal foxing. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Godfrey, who wrote the Introduction, on the front free endpaper. The original owner wrote a small note on the rear free endpaper noting that the book was a gift to her from Godfrey himself. Godfrey, best known as a radio and television broadcaster, was also an avid hunter and conservationist.

In a fair dust jacket, with several large chips, and numerous tape repairs, but presenting decently in a clear archival jacket protector. SIGNED and lengthily INSCRIBED by the author on the front free endpaper: "Dear Lola, The tales herein may not remind you of [our pleasant ???] but may they [prove?] to in some measure to [sic] renew those happy memories. Kermit Daugherty." A debut novel about south-central Ohio, between the Ohio River and Chillicothe, written by one of that region's native sons, and written in a kind of country-rural dialect. The book is scarce, with or without dust jacket, and genuinely rare signed.

Wonderfully INSCRIBED by Wallace on p. 13 to Dorothy Carlisle (later Montgomery, the wife of Georgia writer and critic Marion Montgomery): "For Dorothy Carlisle, who appeared somewhere in the "high canyons" and made me feel "the stark negation" and more free to rise, whatever "the purpose that the stars intend." - William Wallace Davidson." The fragments in quotation marks refer to lines in the published poem on that page, "The Loneliest Born." Davidson was the lesser-known brother of Fugitive poet Donald Davidson, who was a successful poet and contemporary of John Crowe Ransom and Cleanth Brooks. Still a presentable jacket on this rare mystery title, which was Davis's first book. Davis died of a likely suicide just six years after this book was published.
