"Life and Campaigns of Lieut.-Gen. Thomas J. Jackson (Stonewall Jackson)" by Robert Lewis Dabney is a detailed biography of the Confederate General, enriched with firsthand accounts and primary documents provided by Jackson's family and the Confederate government. 1881 Frank & JESSE JAMES Life Adventures of Younger Gang Western Outlaws Robbers

"Life and Adventures of Frank and Jesse James" by Joseph A. Dacus is a comprehensive chronicle of the notorious James brothers, Frank and Jesse, who were infamous outlaws in the post-Civil War United States. Dacus, an American writer, journalist, and politician, explores the brothers' early life, their violent exploits as Confederate guerrillas during the Civil War, and their post-war life of crime as bank and train robbers. The book offers a thorough recounting of their numerous robberies, brushes with the law, and their ultimate fates—Jesse's infamous assassination by Robert Ford and Frank's surrender and subsequent acquittal. The book also describes the socio-political context of their times, examining how their Southern sympathies and the chaotic post-war era contributed to their life of crime. Despite the brutality of their crimes, the James brothers garnered significant public sympathy and notoriety, a paradox… Read More

C.W. Dana's 'The Great West' is a fascinating account of the American west, following the surge in migration westward after the Gold Rush. This book functioned as an emigration guide, giving both physical and historical descriptions of the West. Dana focused on each state – Ohio, Missouri, Texas, California, etc. – the Octagon Settlement Company, Vegetarian Settlement, rivers, and most importantly the travelling routes of the West.

According to Wagner-Camp:
"This book is a compilation of information including statistics, speeches and pamphlets concerning the United States west of the Alleghenies. 'The West' for Dana embraces the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas Territory, New Mexico, Utah, Oregon, Washington Territory and California. The author describes a number of routes to the west."

1591 Witch Hunter Daneau Political Aphorisms GREEK Philosophy Aristotle Plato
Lambert Daneau was a French Calvinist known for his controversial books on witchcraft, sorcery, and science in the Bible. While not his magnum opus, 'Politicorum Aphorismorum Silva' was an important book on ancient Greek philosophy, written to cite virtues of the great Greek thinkers. This book was an enormous collection of Greek and Latin aphorisms, which, according to Hall
"indicates Daneau's broad knowledge of Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Isocrates, Pliny the Younger, etc. His synthesis of these authors provided students with useful abridgments of previous political thought."
This particular 16th-century edition of Daneau's 'Aphorisms' was published in Leiden by the famed Dutch print house Plantin Press.

Description:
1720 Descartes Philosophy Jesuit Daniel Horology Cartesian Astrology
Gabriel Daniel was a French Jesuit historian who wrote out against famous philosophers such as Pascal and Descartes. One of his most famous treatises of "Voyage of the World of Descartes" in which he seeks to disprove the scientific theories of Rene Descartes. It was in this book that Daniel gave commentary on his beliefs that the human soul was not immortal, but that it represented the entirety of natural philosophy. While he himself did not consider himself a Cartesian, his doctrines were closely tied to Cartesian principles. (Kors, p.116)
This 1720 French edition of Gabriel Daniel's preeminent work is illustrated with a dozen in-text figures depicting views of the solar system, sun, and planetary orbit and how it relates to natural philosophy, horology, and the use of a tourbillon, or time-keeping mechanics.

Description:
1699 Blaise PASCAL Provincial Letters JESUIT Philosophy Gabriel Daniel Response

"I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter."
― Blaise Pascal, The Provincial Letters

The "Provincial Letters" by Blaise Pascal are a collection of letters in defense of Antoine Arnauld, a Jansenist who was condemned for heresy. Because of the content and nature of the letters, Pascal wrote them under a pseudonym of Louis de Montalte and added satire, humor, and whit to them as to further himself from the letters.

Unsurprisingly, numerous responses were written and published reacting to Pascal's landmark work. One such work was Gabriel Daniel's "Reponse aux Lettres Provinciales". Includes interviews and conversations with Jesuits, gaining their perspective against Pascal. Ultimately, Daniel rests on a sturdy defense of Jesuits, attacking Pascal and his theories.

1676 Dapper CHINA Hong Kong Spanish Portuguese JESUIT Missions Illustrated RARE
Olfert Dapper was an important 17th-century Dutch physician who made his name from his geography books, even though he never left the Netherlands. He published important histories of Asia and Africa, with the most important perhaps being his description of Kangxi Emperor and the Qing Dynasty. It includes information on 17th-century Portuguese and Spanish Jesuit missions in China and Hong Kong including Alvaro Semedo in Guangzhou. The impressive illustrations throughout this work make it highly desirable.

Description:
1726 Canterbury Cathedral 1ed Monastery Dart Illustrated Architecture 100+ ARMS
John Dart was an early 18th-century English historian who is primarily remembered for his historical perspectives of Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. The latter, perhaps his best work, is considered one of the most important histories of the cathedral church at Canterbury as well as the once thriving monastery in Canterbury.
While the historical contents of this enormous folio first edition of Dart's "Canterbury" are important, the subscriber pages are perhaps the most interesting aspect of this work. Unlike most works from this era, this book features engraved views of each subscriber's arms – hundreds of illustrated figures of coats-of-arms! Other full-page engravings appear throughout this book – views of tombs, portraits, and places of rest of English saints and nobles.
