Description:
To celebrate its 100th birthday, Daimler Benz produced a commemorative magazine called 100 Years of Motor-Cars, Daimler Benz 1886-1986, A Birthday Magazine. Copies were sent to its select customers. This is one such copy, accompanied by a letter to the customer from the then-president of Daimler Benz Canada.
With lots of photographs, it goes through the history of the company. It's 50 pages, including covers, which have insert flaps. High-quality paper and production values.
I couldn't get a good photo of the cover, so photo #1 is one I found elsewhere. Mine is photo #2, which was too big for the scanner. But, save for minor wear to the edges of the cover, and a paper clip mark on the top right, this copy is in mint condition.

Description:
This is an unread copy of African Kingdoms, part of the Great Ages of Man series which Time-Life Books began publishing in the 60s. This book was written in 1967 by the British historian Basil Davidson (1914-2010); Time-Life's editors updated it and it was republished in 1980.

This book was well received. Reviews say it's very progressive and takes pains to point out the flaws in many traditional ideas about African culture and history, including the perspective that Africa is one large monolithic culture. It's a good place to start if you're someone who wants a basic grasp of African history.

It's 8 3/4" x 10 3/4". 191 pages, including loads of photos.
Pristine condition.

Description:
This is a first edition (1991) of Murther and Walking Spirits, the second-last novel by the brilliant Canadian novelist Robertson Davies (1913-1995). It is a ghost story; after a film critic is murdered, his ghost attends a strange film festival. While the attendees see actual films, the critic's ghost sees films detailing the lives of his ancestors—one was a Tory during the American Revolution, another who was a carpenter who married a blue-blooded woman. The films deal with more and more recent subjects until the novel is brought to a modern-day conclusion.
This is a perfect copy, with an unclipped dust jacket. The edges of the jacket are starting to darken a little, but there are no marks of any kind in or on the book.

Description:
This is a first edition of An Anthology of Modern Irish Poetry, edited by the American academic Wes Davis. It is a comprehensive representation of Irish poetic achievement in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from poets such as Austin Clarke and Samuel Beckett, to those who came of age in the turbulent '60s, including Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley; to a new generation of Irish writers such as David Wheatley and Sinéad Morrissey. Each poet is represented by a generous number of poems--there are 800 poems; the table of contents is 27 pages. There are Nobel Prize winners, relative unknowns, by those working in English and Gaelic (translated). There is a historical overview, lots of notes and a short essay on each poet.
976 pages. Lovely paper.
Minor wear to the (unclipped) dust jacket.
There is a crease in the table of contents pages, which appears to be a printing issue.
But there is no evidence that the book has been read. It's in perfect condition.

Description:
Life With Father is a collection of short stories by the American author and cartoonist Clarence Day (1874-1935), published just after his death in 1936.
Day wrote humorously about his family and life. The stories of his father were first printed in the New Yorker magazine. They portray a rambunctious, overburdened Wall Street broker who demands that everything from his family should be just so. The more he rails against his staff, his cook, his wife, his horse, salesmen, holidays, his children and the inability of the world to live up to his impossible standards, the more comical and lovable he becomes to his own family who love him despite it all. It is a picture of New York upper-middle-class family life in the 1890s.
In 1939, the book was turned into a play. The Broadway production ran for more than seven years to become the longest-running non-musical play on Broadway, a record that it still holds. The play was adapted into a 1947 feature film and a television series.

Description:
This is a first edition from the classics series published by International Collectors Library in 1970.It is two novels.
Pere Goriot (or Old Goriot)is an 1835 novel by Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), included in the Scènes de la vie privée section of his novel sequence La Comédie humaine. Set in Paris in 1819, it follows the intertwined lives of three characters: the elderly doting Goriot, a mysterious criminal-in-hiding named Vautrin, and a naive law student named Eugène de Rastignac. It is considered Balzac's most important novel and it has often been adapted for film and the stage. It also is the base of the French expression 'Rastignac', which is a term for a social climber willing to do anything to get ahead.
Eugenie Grandet is an 1833 novel which Balzac continued into his Human Comedy series. It is the story of a young woman whose wealthy but tight-fisted father tries to arrange a financially advantageous marriage for her when she falls in love with her penniless cousin.

This is a first edition of The Peaceable Kingdom, An American Saga, the 1972 novel by the prolific Dutch-American playwright and novelist Jan de Hartog (1914-2002). De Hartog moved to the US in the early 60s and became a Quaker.
From an online synopsis:
"I am George Fox," said the fair-haired stranger. "May the Lord bless thee and awaken thee, Margaret Fell." His eyes went on searching hers. They were blue like a sailor's and of an odd shape and rather slanted. It was at this moment Margaret Fell's life took a strange and dramatic turn. For her encounter with George Fox, a virile, lust-provoking, itinerant preacher, made her feel as though a whole new life were ahead. For the first time her passion was aroused. George awakened in her a capacity for love she had never known. But was this love directed at George the man of God...or George the man? This novel is the story of the passionate, flesh-and-blood men and women who began the Quaker movement in England in the 17th century and of those who settled… Read More

Description:
The Clever Gentleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha, written by Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, was originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. It is the most important work to come out of Spain, is considered the first 'modern novel', and is considered by some to be the greatest literary work ever written.
This is a near-perfect copy, designed by George Salter and published by Random House in 1941. It was originally sold in a box sleeve, which has been lost. It is plain green buckram covers with a red and gold design on the spine. The spine is perfect except for a bit of shelf wear at the bottom. The paper is beautiful. It is a large heavy book--nearly 3 lbs and 567 pages, illustrated with numerous wood engravings by the German-American artist Hans Alexander Mueller. It has two flaws. There is what looks like original glue traces on page 14; a production error perhaps. And something, likely water, was splashed on pages 266 and 267. Other than that, it is a perfect, lovely book.
