Description:
Marseilles, Images en Manoeuvres Éditions, 2003. . First edition; 4to (270 × 220 mm, 10¾ x 8 ¾ in); colour and black-and-white photographs, texts by Christian Caujolle and Bruno Le Dantec in French and English, light toning to margins as usual; photo-illustrated perfect bound wrappers, near-fine; 192pp. In Insomnia, Antoine d'Agata presents a series of nightscapes and nocturnal portraits which resulted from chance encounters. He describes his work as fulfilling 'the need to record, not as a deliberate act, but as a flat pattern of regular and extreme experiences. A practice inseparable from a particular way of looking at life, where the risk, the desire, the unconscious remains the essential elements. No moral attitude there, no judgment, but the need to explore some universes, share them through, without any precautions... It is a passage to the act of writing, to the verge of extinction, enjoyment and death.'

Description:
New York, Random House, 1943. . First edition, sole printing; 4to (28.6 x 23 cm); colour frontispiece, 11 full-page colour illustrations and one double-page colour illustration, plain line illustrations throughout, pictorial patterned endpapers; publisher's red cloth-backed pictorial boards, minor chaffing along the bottom edge of the boards but a superb copy in the somewhat frayed, price-clipped dust jacket with a couple of very minor chips. A very smart first edition copy of Roald Dahl's first book The Gremlins, a collaborative effort with Disney for a feature-length animation which, in part due to copyright issues revolving around the 'gremlin' characters, never took off. Fortunately the planes and Air Force pilots featured in the story had better luck getting off the ground, but only to be subsequently plagued by these mischievous sprites with mechanical failures and worse.Laid into this copy is a black and white photograph of an animator and Walt Disney looking at some of the concept art… Read More

Description:
London, Jonathan Cape, 1983. . First edition, first impression; 8vo; illustrations by Quentin Blake, paper stock beginning to brown as usual; publisher's blue boards, titles to spine gilt, small mark to the front free endpaper, Quentin Blake designed dust-jacket, lightly faded, otherwise a very good copy. A classic dark tale from a master of the genre, the macabre menace only slightly mitigated by the target audience being children. Winner of the Whitbread Award for Children's Novel in 1983, The Witches was also successfully dramatised on several occasions, most famously perhaps the 1990 film featuring Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, which featured a differing ending from that in the book (much to the author's chagrin). Intriguingly, it has also found itself at one time or another banned for perceived misogyny, as Dahl states that only women can be witches: 'I do not wish to speak badly about women,' the author writes. 'Most women are lovely. But the fact remains that all witches are… Read More

Skt. Peterburg & Moskva, Volf, 1911-1914. . Vols. I-III fourth edition, vol. IV third edition; 4 vols, 8vo (27.2 x 19 cm), text in two columns, paginated accordingly. Contemporary red calf over red cloth boards, gilt lettering to spines, red edges; slightly rubbed and sunned. This was the most comprehensive dictionary of the Russian language at the time of publication. Vladimir Dahl (1801-72) dedicated 53 years of his life to this monumental work, which contains 200,000 words and uses 3,000 proverbs and sayings to illustrate their meaning. Dahl began collecting words for a future dictionary at the age of eighteen, and passed away working on its second edition. He was awarded the Konstantinivskaya Medal and Lomosov Prize for his work, and in 1868 was elected an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The third and fourth editions were edited by Jan de Courtenay (1845 – 1929), one of the most influential linguists in Russia in the late XIX - early XX century, and are famous for their… Read More

Description:
W.C. Mayr, Kassel, circa 1760]. . Quarto. 41 etched plates (of 49, lacking engraved title and plates 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 31, 35 & 41), captions printed in German and French; light marginal soiling and water-staining to some plates, corner tear to plate 30, but images clean. Loose in recent cloth solander box. Extremely rare work on Russian costumes and the cries of St Petersburg, masterly drawn by a contemporary of Le Prince in a typical 18th-century style. Dahlsteen was born in Stockholm in 1720. He was trained as an artist and at 23 and left his native city, first for Kassel and then Riga. In 1749 he visited St. Petersburg from where he returned to Kassel by 1753, presumably where he died in 1769.Although the 'Nationalmuseum' of Stockholm holds a volume of his etchings, Dahlsteen's work related to Russia is very rare: we couldn't trace any copy at auction in the last 35 years and COPAC lists only one copy, in the British Library.
