Suite of 226 etchings (of 366) from Deuchar's scarce A Collection of Etchings, 1803 apparently almost all of Vols. 1 and 2 of the 3-volume set.
The engravings are trimmed to the plate mark and mounted on cream paper, from one to five to a page, ranging in size from 4cm x 4cm to 14cm x 19cm. Some etchings are signed Deuchar, a few have the artist's name (e.g., Bega, Ostade, Vliet, Castiglione) and most are dated from 1783 to 1802.
The suite includes religious scenes and beggars by Rembrandt, several heads by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, many rustic scenes by Adriaen van Ostade, and a few after Stefano Della Bella, Hendrick Vliet and Cornelis Bega, five plates from Robert Watson's Five Senses suite, and two plates by Adriaen Brouwer (engraved by Thomas Major). A very good copy of Scottish engraver David Deuchar's Dance of Death.Second edition of 1803, with the plates lacking the decorative frames used in the first edition of 1786.With 47 plates engraved by Deuchar, comprising 46 engravings of figures in the Dances of Death, one engraving of the scabbard, two frontispieces (one with a self-portrait in profile and one after Chretien Mechel with Deuchar's name replaced), and one engraved portrait of Holbein. Complete with 120 beautiful copperplate engravings, drawn, engraved and coloured by the author. Donovan made his drawings from recently caught fish, most while they were still living. The text often describes the location the fish was caught: the ocean sunfish, Mola mola, was "an elegant little specimen caught near the coast of Brighton."
Depicts several endangered species such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, and Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, and the critically endangered European sturgeon, Acipenser sturio, and angelshark, Squatina squatina.

British Birds was originally issued in 50 monthly parts with two plates each, and later published in five volumes in five successive years from 1794-1798. The illustrations were based on specimens in Donovan's personal collections of about 400 species. He paid extravagently for rare birds, buying specimens from collectors and friends, poultry markets, and other museums including John Latham's, Mr Green's of Westminster, and the Leverian.
