Description:
Zwolle, Netherlands: Peter van Os van Breda, 1495. Disbound. Very good. Vita Christi by Ludolphus de Saxonia. Zwolle, Netherlands: Peter van Os van Breda, 1495. This disbound leaf measures 7" x 9¾". In Dutch. 40 lines in Gothic type with handpainted red majuscule. Dots of rubrication on several smaller capitals. Bright and crisp with some light soiling. Includes an attractive woodcut illustration (5½" x 3¾") of Mark 2:23-28, Jesus and three disciples in the grainfield responding to criticism by the Pharisees. Ludolph of Saxony wrote the Life of Christ in 1374. I was not just a simple biography. Rather, it also contained a compilation of commentaries from the Church Fathers, dogmatic and moral dissertations, spiritual instructions, meditations, and prayers. It was so important in its time that it was considered to be a summa evangelica, or "highest evangelical." Mark 2:23-28 reads 23 Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to… Read More

Description:
Basel. Switzerland: Michael Furter, 1520. Disbound. Very good. The Ship of Fools, first published in 1494 in Basel, Switzerland by Sebastian Brant, was printed by Michael Furter and illustrated by woodcuts from Albrecht Durer. 13 editions were published between 1494 and 1521 (six authorized and seven pirated). The book, a satire on the many then current ecclesiastical abuses as exemplified by Brant's imaginary character, Saint Grobian, the patron saint of vulgarity and coarse manners, was one of the most popular works during the early years of printing, A substantial part of The Ship of Fools' popularity was no doubt due to its marvelous woodcut illustrations, most of which were created by Albrecht Dürer, then a young journeyman woodcut designer working in Basel. This leaf (7½" x 11") is from Furter's 1520 edition titled, Des hochwirdigen Doctor Keiserspergs narenschiff : so er gepredigt hat zü Strassburg in der hohen stifft . . . darin vil weissheit ist zü lerne. (The high-ranking Doctor… Read More

Description:
This one-page shareholder list measures approximately 5" x 8". It was printed on 28 May 1864 and mailed three days later to the "Assessors of Bridgewater, Massachusetts." It is franked with a 2-cent black Jackson stamp (Scott #73) which at the time was the pre-paid rate for sending printed materials. It bears a circular Boston/Paid postmark dated May 31. In nice shape. The Stewart Gold Mine was one of many mines to spring up in the Central City region of Colorado in wake of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush after paydirt was struck in Gregory Gulch in the late spring of 1859. By 1860, over 10,000 miners had descended upon Central City to mine the Gregory Lode and four other major veins that were subsequently found in the region: Bates, Gunnell, Kansas, and Burroughs. Most of the miners worked for companies, and in 1863, and after signing a resolution to form a "hard rock miner's union" rioted and began destroying property at the Bob Trail mine. Mining security responded and skirmished with the rioter throughout… Read More
