A Queen's Quorum title.Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed by the author, dated 24/9/83 and on his Gipsy House writing paper: about 70 words to ''PC'', ''...Of course I remember you... I had a flat in Albert Mansions and my best friend lived, until a year ago, in Overstrand Mansions. I don't come to London very often...'' The two addresses mentioned by Dahl are both mansion blocks overlooking Battersea Park. The recipient of the letter is Peter Cotes whose ownership signature is on the front free endpaper of the book. He was an actor, director, producer, writer etc, but seems not to have been involved in any of the screen adaptations of Roald Dahl's work.Letter: torn with no loss and clumsily folded. The author of Two Years Before the Mast, the classic account of life as an ordinary seaman, here writes what became for at least a generation the standard reference for maritime law as applied to sailors. The American edition, published in the same year, has the title The Seaman's Friend.On the first blank is the ownership inscription, ''E. Simonot, sailor on board the English Bark the Mercury from London, April 1848''.Small ink inscription on front free endpaper. The plates show signs of damp which must have affected them before the book was bound up. Endpapers tanned at edges. Covers rubbed at edges and joints. Very good. Scarce.

The author recounts the final days of the dandy now penniless, and insane from syphilis. His precipitate fall from the grace was set in motion partly by a falling-out with his former close friend the Prince Regent (during which Brummell uttered the immortal phrase, ''Alvanley, who's your fat friend?'') and partly by his intemperate gambling.Covers slightly dusty with some small nicks at the edges.
