Description:
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 1987. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8x6x3. Dabney provides young aspiring journalists and historians with a history of the challenges, responsibilities, and problems that have accompanied both dedicated editorship and guardianship of the freedom of the press. Pistols and Pointed Pens depicts the colorful personalities of the 11 editors (including Thomas Ritchie, John Hampden Pleasants, George W. Bagby, and the notable black editor John Mitchell, Jr.) who had impact on the Richmond newspaper community and played important roles in both Virginia and United States politics by influencing public opinion and acting as a public conscience (some of whom became involved in duels during the nineteenth century). Quoting primary sources and recounting anecdotes, Dabney gives an entertaining, easily read, humorous account of the dangers faced by these 19th-century journalists.

Description:
American Bee Journal, 1971. Trade paperback. Like New. The Dadant family, originally from France, is one the first families of beekeeping in America. Charles Dadant (1817-1902) is considered one of the founding fathers of modern beekeeping. He was always seeking a better way to keep bees. Just as he had begun with the old European "eke", he quickly abandoned that kind of beekeeping for the modern Langstroth hive concept. Bee hives have often been designed and built without regard for the needs and habits of the honey bee colony. Probably the best design for a colony was the large hive developed by Charles Dadant. It provided a large, deep brood chamber with plenty of room in which the queen could lay, and shallower supers for honey storage. However, the price and promotion of smaller hives offered for sale during the period from about 1885 to 1900 made them more popular. Charles son, Camille Pierre Dadant, authored First Lessons in Beekeeping, a standard and still important work on this…

Description:
Shearwater Books, 2002. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 6x1x9. Why shouldn't people who deplete our natural assets have to pay, and those who protect them reap profits? Conservation-minded entrepreneurs and others around the world are beginning to ask just that question, as the increasing scarcity of natural resources becomes a tangible threat to our own lives and our hopes for our children. The New Economy of Nature brings together Gretchen Daily, one of the world's leading ecologists, with Katherine Ellison, a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist, to offer an engaging and informative look at a new "new economy" -- a system recognizing the economic value of natural systems and the potential profits in protecting them. Through engaging stories from around the world, the authors introduce readers to a diverse group of people who are pioneering new approaches to conservation.

Description:
University of California Press, 1995. Softcover. Very Good. 9x0x13. A short tear to front cover. My Tibet movingly elaborates this message: here the Dalai Lama offers his views on how world peace, happiness, and environmental responsibility are inextricably linked. He explains the meaning of pilgrimage for Tibetan Buddhists and gives an engaging account of his early life in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. In addition, he reveals many sides to his natureâcompassion, profound faith, common sense, generosity, a playful sense of humorâin personal reflections matched here to 108 photographs of the land he hasn't seen since 1959. Together the breathtaking photographs, which express Rowell's own commitment to the natural world, and the Dalai Lama's observations help preserve the enduring meaning of Tibet's culture, religion, and natural heritage. Galen Avery Rowell (1940 â 2002) was a wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist and…

Rizzoli International Publications, 1996. Hardcover. Very Good/Good . 9x0x9. A 2" tear to dustjacket. Throughout 1994, photographer Phil Borges traveled to Tibet, as well as parts of Nepal and northern India where thousands of Tibetan refugees now reside, photographing Tibetans in an effort to understand what had happened to them, to their country and their culture. In doing so, he became fascinated by Buddhist philosophy and the Tibetan commitment to nonviolence.Tibetan Buddhists believe that there is no greater vehicle than compassion and forgiveness to counteract the suffering in the world. Their unique Buddhist practices and beliefs provide a framework for the attainment of mental peace and enlightenment, a goal they are encouraged to pursue from an early age. They are taught to value contentment, fulfillment, and mental peace above all else, since one's state of mind is believed to be the only possession that survives from one lifetime to the next.As the Tibetans work to save their…

Fresco Fine Art Publications LLC, 2006. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good . 10x1x11. Some light edgewear to dustjacket; else In Very Good+ condition and Very Good+ dustjacket. Landscapes of Colorado features the efforts of artists who have used the state's natural beauty as inspirations for their paintings and photographs. Art curator Ann Daley selected the artists. Some lived in Colorado only briefly, while others have spent their entire careers in the state. Daley also provides an essay linking each artist to the impressive history of Colorado, where for over a century painters and photographers have been attracted to its magnificent views and its crisp, clear light. Art critic Michael Paglia provides a profile of each of the artists. In writing about them, he takes into account key experiences in their development, as well as analyzing their varying styles, the techniques they embrace, and places them in the broader context of landscape art. The artists found in Landscapes of…

Quiller Press Ltd, 1995-01-01. Hardcover. Like New/Fine. 11x8x1. The gunmaking firm of Boss & Company has been in continuous existence for two centuries. Throughout this period, unlike many of its contemporaries, it has remained a family firm. Its logo "Builders of Best Guns Only" was conceived without any arrogance and perfectly describes both the firm and its founder, Thomas Boss (1790-1857), who built sporting guns and rifles of the the highest quality only. This tradition was carried on after his death and today the firm produces best guns to exactly that same standard. They have been responsible for major technical innovations in gunmaking. John Robertson, the proprietor at the turn of the century, produced the first reliable single trigger that won universal acclaim. He also invented an over-and-under gun that is generally agreed to be the lightest, strongest and most handsome over-and-under ever produced. [The author] has undertaken considerable research into the history of the…

University of Oklahoma Press, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Like New/Good. 6x0x9. The dustjacket has some chipping, tears, and edgewear. Here is the story of Colorado's old hotelsâsome lavish, some lascivious, a few just long forgotten. Before the turn of the century, when travel was arduous, not to mention downright dangerous, voyagers to the Rocky Mountains wanted to lower their travel-weary limbs into plush chairs, nibble oysters, and sip champagne. No luxury was denied them when they arrived at most Colorado hotels. At the Hotel de Paris in Georgetown, for example, an unexpected guest might dine on wild game, tiny French peas, crusty French bread, and properly chilled wine after only a few minutes' wait. At the Sheridan in Telluride a heartier traveler could sit down to a plank steak, named after the piece of wood whose size it resembled. At the Teller House in Central City one could order buffalo tongue in aspic. At Gold Hill, where the miners knew good food if not…

Colorado 500. First edition. Ringbound. Like New. A scarce collectable from the Colorado 500 Charity Invitational Motorcycle Rides originating near Basalt, Colorado. Attractively bound in a ring binder with motorcycle graphics on spine. No date, but probably circa 2000. Wally Dallenbach planted seeds for the Colorado 500 in the fall of 1975, when he and Sherm Cooper enjoyed several days of traveling the Rocky Mountain trails and visiting mining ghost towns in the state. They invited seven friends to join them the following year to ride same backcountry trails. That group of nine, which included auto-racing luminaries Al and Bobby Unser, composed the field of the first Colorado 500 Dirt Bike Ride. Wally and his wife Peppy dedicated themselves to hosting the annual event, and as the guest list grew so did interest in a street bike ride which formulated in 1987 called the Colorado 500 Charity Invitational Road Ride held in June which has grown in the same stages. As of 2018 the Road Ride merged…
