Description:
Contemporary half red calf. Plates foxed as usual. Light wear. Very good.
FIRST EDITION in book form with the vignetted engraved title page dated 1850. A superb association copy from the library of novelist E. M. Forster, author of A Room with a View, A Passage to India, Howards End, and others. Forster's Aspects of the Novel (1927) discusses Dickens.
E.M. Forster's father died early in his youth and his childhood was dominated his mother, aunts and cousins. Among the most prominent was his paternal great-aunt Marianne Thornton, whose ₤8000 legacy was invaluable to Forster. Her niece Edith was the first owner of this book which was read by the young Forster cousins. The Forster family copy of David Copperfield
became a part of E. M. Forster's library where it remained until his death. Upon E.M. Forster's death his library was divided between King's College, his friends and a sale catalog by W. Heffer and Sons booksellers. The present volume was lot 88 in that catalog.

Description:
In this portrait Sternberger shows Einstein dressed informally. Einstein was keenly aware of his public image, and often attempted to show a cheerful visage. The common backgrounds of the two men helped the photographer to put Einstein in a relaxed state and to capture him in a more vulnerable pose.
Marcel Sternberger and Albert Einstein had known each other in Europe long before the two met again in Princeton, New Jersey for this session. Before the men left Europe Einstein had furnished the preface to a book written by Sternberger.
After a warm welcome and lemonade, the men settled in for the sitting. They discussed various topics including World War II and the state of American education. Although some photographs from the session show Einstein with a telltale twinkle in his eye, here the great scientist appears fatigued. The seriousness of their conversation seems to have worn him down.
Still, the conversation had its moments of levity. At one moment, Sternberger asked Einstein to… Read More

Description:
FIRST EDITION. "On the Movement of Small Particles Suspended in a Stationary Liquid Demanded by the Molecular Kinetic Theory of Heat" appears here on pp. 549-560. This landmark paper on Brownian motion is one of the three great papers from 1905, Einstein annus mirabilis.
Although most physicists and chemists accepted the idea of atoms as a useful concept in 1905, many still questioned whether they actually existed. Einstein later claimed that "my major aim in [this research] was to find facts which would guarantee as much as possible the existence of atoms of finite size."
In 1827, botanist Robert Brown had used a microscope to look at dust grains floating in water. He found that the floating grains were moving about erratically, a phenomenon that became known as "Brownian motion." In this paper Einstein proved the reality of these molecules and their motions by producing the first statistical physics analysis of Brownian motion. French physicist Jean Perrin used Einstein's results to… Read More

Description:
Contemporary half dark green roan. Rubbed, some chipping, separation at upper joint. Library markings.
FIRST EDITION of "On the Theory of Light Production and Light Absorption" (pp. 199-206). This classic in the history of physics is Einstein's second paper on the photoelectric effect. Einstein reconciles his and Planck's independent derivations of the blackbody formula E=hν. Planck's derivation of this formula ascribed it to a restriction on the energy changes possible when radiation is produced or absorbed by matter, which implied no restriction on the energies of either matter or radiation. Einstein's 1905 derivation ascribed it to a restriction on the energy of radiation alone, but in this paper, he proposes the modern idea that the energies of both matter and radiation are quantized, which led to his work on quantum specific heats.

Original brown cloth, top edge gilt, publisher's slipcase. Very fine, with the fragile slipcase in excellent condition. A superb copy.
FIRST EDITION. One of 760 numbered copies signed and dated by Einstein.
This important volume contains Einstein's autobiography, specially written for the book, a bibliography of his works, twenty-five scientists' discussions of Einstein's work and achievements, with Einstein's replies. Contributors of essays include Niels Bohr, Max Born, Wolfgang Pauli, and Kurt Godel.
I. I. Rabi's review in Science hailed this as a "most important and significant volume. It is most difficult to get scientists to write simply and clearly about the fundamentals of their science and the leading philosophical ideas that guide them. … In this book there is played out a great scientific drama of the last two decades. … The book starts with an intellectual autobiography by Einstein himself. He satirically calls it his obituary. I know of no other to compare with it. Neither… Read More

Description:
Two volumes. Original cloth. Light fraying to spine ends, else a fine set.
First American edition. A splendid presentation copy inscribed by Ralph Waldo Emerson to his brother: "Wm. Emerson from his brother Waldo."
The inscription is in pencil in the second volume. Emerson used this intimate signature only with his immediate family. Page 270 of the first volume bears a pencil correction apparently in Emerson's hand.
Emerson paid his greatest tribute and service to his friend Thomas Carlyle in arranging for this first American publication of The French Revolution. Thus Emerson was responsible for establishing in America the view of the French Revolution that has "molded popular conception of the French Revolution down to the present day" (Printing and the Mind of Man 304). The French Revolution "is a prose epic, a work of creative genius, in which the facts of history are illumined by the imagination of a poet" (Cambridge History).
"I know nobody among my contemporaries except Carlyle who… Read More
