A very rare series of views by an artist who occupies an important place in the history of art in Nova Scotia. Eagar was born in Ireland, and by 1824 he was living just outside St. John's, where he owned a twenty- acre estate. In 1828 he sold the estate and moved into St. John's itself, where he advertised his services as a silhouette maker and teacher of landscape painting. He moved to Nova Scotia in 1834, arriving in Halifax in July of that year, where he opened a Drawing Academy. London, 1740.. Engraving with hand-coloring, 14 x 8 3/4 inches. Minor soiling. Color quite bright and fresh. Very good. A satire against French Cardinal Fleury, Chief Minister to Louis XV, published during the frenzy of celebrations over Admiral Vernon's victory over the Spanish at the Battle of Porto Bello - an enthusiasm which the Cardinal apparently did not share. Fleury was an ally of Robert Walpole, whose power was in decline and had reluctantly agreed to hostilities with Spain. Fleury is seen here seated, reaching out toward a medallion of Admiral Vernon and holding a scroll which reads, "His iron will get ye better of my gold" and "G-d, he'll take all our acquisitions in America." On the wall behind him are several small crude illustrations, one of which appears to be a portly Walpole hanging from a gallows above the slogan, "No matter if he is longer than ye gallows." Sir Robert Walpole's lengthy diplomatic efforts eventually came to naught, and he bowed to popular sentiment in October of 1839 and commenced the War of Jenkins' Ear. "Includes several references to naval actions & commerce in [the] West Indies" - EUROPEAN AMERICANA. A REPLY... was one of many 1739 pamphlets that reflected and reinforced the British public's outrage at perceived injustices to British seamen by the Spanish in the Caribbean. Letter concerning the secession on March 9, 1739 of the "Patriots" from the House of Commons over the negotiations preceding the War of Jenkins' Ear. The Patriots were Tories and disaffected Whigs who opposed Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister. Walpole argued for peace and moderation in dealing with Spain, and he was supported by a scant majority. This letter presents the informed view of a member of Parliament, displaying the furor in England for the protection of their American trade and decrying the factitious nature of English politics. The secession proved advantageous for Walpole because it allowed him to push through several bills relating to the free exportation of sugar and molasses from the West Indian Colonies. ESTC T138894. Walpole's long diplomatic efforts, praised by the anonymous author of this pamphlet, would soon prove to have been in vain, as the Prime Minister reluctantly declared war on Spain later in the year. The result was the desultory affair known as the War of Jenkins' Ear. (Sabin 64143), this pamphlet criticizes the Convention of El Pardo and Prime Minister Walpole's other diplomatic efforts to avoid war with Spain. The House of Commons sided overwhelmingly with the belligerent faction, claiming abuses of British seamen and unfair interruption of trade by the Spanish authorities in the Caribbean, and pressured Walpole into commencing the War of Jenkins' Ear in October 1739. Johnson was an active abolitionist, whose father belonged to the Union Humane Society, Benjamin Lundy's first anti-slavery organization. Lundy (1789-1839) was a prominent Quaker abolitionist and this account of his life and travels was compiled under the direction of his children, making a copy presented by his son as close to an authorial presentation copy as one will find. On the second trip his route was by steamboat from Cincinnati to Nashville, thence to Memphis and New Orleans, and by sea to Brazoria; on foot to San Felipe; to San Antonio de Bexar, where he worked at his trade of saddler while planning a colonization scheme, August- October 1833, and to Monclava, where he remained until January 1834. New York, 1837.. 68pp. plus twelve folding plates. Original patterned cloth. Spine chipped, hinges cracking, edges worn. Initial leaves dampstained, light foxing throughout. Good. Seth Eastman was an accomplished topographical artist and illustrator, known for his illustrations for books by Henry Schoolcraft and by his wife, Mary Eastman, as well as for his maps. The present volume is an elusive book in which the author calls for a uniform system of topography in America. He describes the topographical delineation of hills and rocks, discusses the representation of light, methods of sketching and drawing, perspective, the problems inherent in reduction and enlargement, and more. Many of the principles and methods are illustrated in the plates, four of which are facsimiles of Eastman's own rough sketches. This work was used by West Point Military Academy for a number of years to educate officers in topographical drawing. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 44129.

Easton argues for the right of the Rhode Island General Assembly to call a constitutional convention, and also offers critiques of the existing constitution and a proposed revised constitution. Eaton, a great popularizer of botanical science, was a respected botanist and educator, surveyor of Albany and Rensselaer counties, and later of the district along the Erie Canal, under the patronage of Stephen Van Rensselaer.
